Jon Ralph on Oliver
  • zero interest from any other club
  • Oliver would need to take a significant pay cut of at least $500k
  • clubs are looking to the future with players like Butters and saving money for players other than Oliver and simply don't want to use salary cap space on him

In other words there's no feasible trade scenario so he's staying at Melbourne.

Are we linked to anyone atm??

Marshall was beaten by our own rucks in the hitouts and had a similar ish influence around the field to blicavs…

Not sure I am all that keen on him.

We need elite mids.

Just back in conway and edwards

I wouldn't pay for Marshall but he is the type of athletic ruck Geelong likes. Saints will ask for too much though.

Newcombe extension to me says they know worpel is going.

Also I can see us going for Archie perkins (much as I dont like it).
I reckon Worpel's going too, but I really don't see the overlap.

He isn't as good, but Newcombe is basically their Smith or Holmes equivalent.

You sign him up, and plan to accommodate his money over X number of years regardless of who else is coming in or out.

He's probably their next captain, considering you can't trust Day until proven otherwise.

It's more they are very similar players and so if you sign newcombe for 7 years its because you know worpel is gone ski

As much as I personally think Worpel is coming ( no inside intel ) but why would Newcombe extension make any difference
The thing they're weighing up with Worpel I imagine is that they want to recruit a big fish midfielder (like Butters), and they probably see Nash as providing necessary defensive grunt, while Mackenzie could be the future. Ward has already broken out, Mackenzie may be next. That's where Worpel could find it tricky to get minutes, assuming Day's body actually holds up. Day, Newcombe, Butters, Nash, Ward, Mackenzie is probably their dream midfield rotation mix for 2027-2029.

What upgrade will he offer over a fit and developing Conway??

We run a gamble of having Conway/edwards fit and paying someone offering similar in marshall 1m to potentially sit in the reserves if he gets overtaken

I think it's more likely they got an answer on Reid

We need a ruckman, and we can’t rely on Conway and Edwards staying injury free.

If we get a mature Ruck and they have to sit in the vfl because Conway is going great, then happy days. If thats not Marshall or Stanley, it probably comes down to the many permeations of the so called ruck merry go round should that happen. If history repeats, we’ll probably end up paying peanuts for someone who doesn’t give a lot.

I am very happy to run the gauntlet on a fit Conway and edwards because Marshall will clog up 800-1m in salary cap and offer no benefit over a fit Conway. It has huge potential to backfire and over no value and limit our pursuits of elite mids.

If Conway has an elite summer, what are you going to do?? Sit him in the VFL because you can’t sit your 1m dollar product in the VFL and then have him go ala Shane Mumford??

Just rotate SDK and blicavs thru there if all fails

Is he even that good?? Was not very impressed when he played us
2025 Marshall has been so-so.

2024 Marshall was good. A big clearance winner and extra midfielder around the ground who used the ball well.

If we were getting 2024 Marshall and he was 27 it'd be a good pick up. At 30 after an average season I'm not sure.

1 durability which Conway isn't. And 2 flexibility because Marshall can act as an extra athletic tall pushing back into defence and getting involved in chains the other way-much like blicavs does and we dont have a replacement for blicavs on the list. He's the type of ruck our team would go for. That said i dont like paying r1s for 30yos as a matter of principle.

Mid/HF. I reckon he will push to get out and we would look at him again. Probably a late r2 or similar.
We already have excellent, prolific mid/HF players in Miers and Mannagh. I can't see us trying to pick up a flakey one on top of that. Martin was different due to capacity to play any position and be a taller/deeper forward.

In a suspect draft , when Ess will have multiple R1 picks , id doubt ess letting him go for that. He is contracted. But if we could add him for that then i would i suppose. Just from a pov of his age and experience ..he would be pnp.

He should be just about reaching his peak. I wonder how much he is just jaded because he looks like no better than Mannagh for example.

Id be happy in Reeves from Hawthorn... Won't cost much and would do a good job, and backing on Conway to go the distance next year, and we get to keep our 1st round pick that we would use on Marshall
