This is the GWS Mock Draft order for the GWS Board Mock Draft.

Reminder, we'll select 3 rounds - as we get close to that (after a number of bids & matches, the last 'third round pick' will come earlier, I'll assess where we actually finish.

OK, Collingwood bids on Alwyn Davey Jr, which Essendon mtaches at pick #24. Cost is 588 points. Essendon uses picks #52 (246 pts), #58 (170 pts) & 63 (112 pts) to match, which totals 528 points, leaving a deficit to take into 2023 of 60 points to come from their second round pick (although, since they traded that to Collingwood in an earlier trade, I believe will come off their third round pick.)

I'll rearrange the draft order, but back to Pie 4 Life for Collingwood to pick again, at #25.

remember reading something like that a few years ago. But not really important for this mock draft anyway

IIRC, that was a first round pick being used to match a first round bid does not result in a new pick at the end of the draft order, but rather spare points are "housed" and able to be used for subsequent picks. I have looked in AFL rules subsequently for it, and can't find it clearly articulated (typical of AFL House!). I don't believe that it applicable here.

Profile - Hotton collected 25 disposals and kicked a goal in Sandringham's Grand Final win over Dandenong, with the midfielder then showing his high-end athletic traits at the Draft Combine. He finished in the top 10 in the 20-metre sprint (2.924 seconds) and the vertical jump (70cm), which comes through in his high energy and impactful game on the field. Hotton is the son of former Carlton and Collingwood big man Trent, although he is not eligible for either club as a father-son.

Rationale - Given the bizarre scenario of GWS taking Sheezel, Nth decide to boost their forward of centre stocks with the exciting fast and athletic prospect in Hotton. We feel with Cadman we have the best KPF and Wardlaw is the extractor so Hotton gives the speed and agility to compliment this and he can also work in the midfield. Surprised he is still available but rapt. Other players strongly considered include Darcy Jones and Henry Hustwaite.

Interesting shape of selections in our mock draft. I reckon that both Hewett and Hotton are significantly below where I would see their value, but they've been picked where some amongst the various media and draft watcher commentators would have them. Which I think indicates what's been said many times, that the opinions on this draft class are quite varied. Certainly, it may leave some quality late pick-ups for some clubs.

Of course, the true test is how they go once they hit an AFL club!

Profile - Hustwaite will be an interesting player for clubs given his skillset and size. A growth spurt saw Hustwaite shoot up in height and become a tall midfield option, and he averaged 23 disposals for the Stingrays this season. His kicking for a player his height is really good and Hustwaite can play in a number of positions as well, including a flank or wing.

Rationale - This was a really difficult situation as Hawthorn have just gutted themselves and are so weak in so many areas, they are destined for the wooden spoon. Hustwaite ultimately gets the gong primarily as he is a good user of the ball and with his height (194cms) he is very flexible and can cover a variety of roles. Mitchell values good kicks as he was himself and was taught by Clarkson who was the same. Hustwaite should be a valuable tool to fill in some of the numerous deficiencies that exist in this list.

Others considered - we gave strong consideration to Darcy Jones but we are pretty happy with small forwards, Harry Rowston could be a good extractor but does he have enough class? Isaac Keeler could be a very interesting SA kid to pair with our first selection but does he have the work ethic to go with his talents?

They’re the two obvious selections in my eyes. Keeler will be forward, Barnett the pure ruck. Eventually both will take over the ruck/second ruck option. Cox has a year left max, Frampton will play defence. Cameron thr starting ruck eventually handing over the reigns. By the time Barnett is first choice, Cameron will be on the decline. We need to pick up at least two talls in this draft minimum.

hmmm, hard one here because there's one I like more than 4 others I'm considering, but I've already loaded up on midfielders, so for list balance we'll go with

Pick 29 - West Coast Eagles - Darcy Jones

Astonishingly good combine testing saw Jones's name jump up in the media recently, but he's been putting in impressive performances for 2 years now, with the only concern of course being his size. At 174 cm and just 63 kg it's hard to see Jones ever fully transitioning into a midfielder at the next level, but with his athletic base and fundamental skills there's no way that he doesn't forge out a career somewhere at AFL level, whether that be as a small forward or a winger will depend on the club he ends up at, but it's hard to pass up the opportunity to add another WA boy to the Eagles list.

As I said off the top, this is a list balance selection, Szybkowski is the highest ranked player left on my board at 19, but with Mackenzie and Hewett already locked in, another inside mid probably just isn't as crucial to bring in when West Coast have holes all over the park. I also considered Max Gruzewski, Jakob Ryan and Sam Gilbey from a talent perspective, and Kaleb Smith from an accuracy POV, but think if Jones was here come draft night 2.0 that the Eagles couldn't add him quick enough

OK, bid on Max Michalanney at #30, matched by Adelaide, requires 432 points. Adelaide match with #45 (347 pts) & #53 (233 pts), leaving a residual of 148 points, which will slot in at around #59.

Collingwood bid at #31 on Harry Rowston, cost is 409 points. GWS use pick #35, worth 522 points to match, leaving a residual of 113 points, slotting back in at #63.

(I would note that because GWS didn't us all of the points from that pick, its residual pick has essentially created an extra pick for GWS - not that GWS will actually use it.)

(P.S. Also, that risk of a pick before #31 - or wherever it ends up - is my I'd be selling that pick somehow to get better value from it. Whether it's moving up an earlier pick, or moving into 2023, either would be better value.)
