The GIANTS are delighted to announce the appointment of Adam Kingsley as the club’s next AFL head coach.

As a former Premiership and Best and Fairest winner with Port Adelaide, where he played 170 games, Kingsley quickly moved into coaching following his playing career, immediately taking up assistant coaching roles with Port Adelaide and then St Kilda. After eight years with the Saints, Kingsley joined Richmond as assistant coach in 2019 where he played a leading role in the Tigers’ last two Premierships.

GIANTS Chief Executive Officer David Matthews said Kingsley's appointment marked the next chapter in the evolution of the football club. “On behalf of the Board and our entire organisation, I’m thrilled to confirm Adam Kingsley as our new head coach,” Mr Matthews said. “After a thorough and considered selection process, Adam’s vision for the club, our players and our people made him the standout candidate for the job. Adam has outstanding values that align with the GIANTS and with 16 years’ coaching experience he is an exceptional tactical coach, a strong, clear communicator, and someone who brings people together. In our 11 years in the competition we have undoubtedly become a successful club with a fantastic culture and a great playing list. But we haven’t been satisfied with our recent results. We - and Adam - believe success isn’t far away and we’re thrilled to have him lead us into our next chapter as a club. This is an incredibly exciting day for our club and Adam's appointment will not only take our playing group and football department forward but will help continue to grow our game across NSW and the ACT. We look forward to welcoming Adam, his wife Nadine and children Cayla, Ethan and Raf to the GIANTS family.”

Mr Matthews also paid tribute to caretaker coach Mark McVeigh. "We thank Mark for his efforts as interim senior coach and the tireless work he has contributed to our program since taking over in round 10,” Mr Matthews said. “It’s a difficult job to come in as caretaker coach but he attacked the role with fresh ideas and sought to improve our players, staff and program at every step. Mark is a person of the highest integrity and character, and he has always put the club first. He was steadfast in leaving the program ready for whoever would be taking over.”

Following an extensive interview process, Kingsley was deemed the best fit for the GIANTS by the club’s interview panel that consisted of Mr Matthews, Chairman Tony Shepherd AO, Football Director Jimmy Bartel and General Manager of Football Jason McCartney. Kingsley said he was honoured to have the opportunity to coach the club for the next three years. “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity,” he said. “It’s a privilege and an honour to be the next senior coach of the GIANTS. I’ve been clear in my aspirations to become a senior coach and over the last 16 years I’ve continued to learn and develop to the point now where I’m absolutely ready to take the next step in my coaching career. This is a club which has built a strong culture from the ground up in just a few short years. In just 11 years the GIANTS have made multiple preliminary finals, and a Grand Final, and while the ultimate success has eluded the club, it’s clear the building blocks are in place. It's clear the players, staff, members and fans are hungry for success, and we’re going to drive each other to get to where we want to go. I believe in this club and what we can achieve together.”

Kingsley played 170 games for Port Adelaide between 1997 and 2006 and was a member of the club’s inaugural team as well as their first Premiership in 2004. He won the Power’s club champion award in just his second season. In 2007, he became an assistant coach at Port Adelaide, a position in which he stayed in until the end of 2010. Kingsley joined St Kilda at the end of the 2010 season as an assistant coach before moving to Richmond in 2019.

Such an intresting interview from McVeigh, really open and honest to some thoughtful questions. Really intresting how he talks about wanting dramatic change in different areas, some great answers about building the club the importance of different departments

If not Clarko which appears certain why not back in spike? are the contenders we talking to better than him? Maybe he could get his brother Jarrad to be be an assistant he is highly regarded in that regard at the swans.

It could be like when roos got the swans job when the board wanted and had signed wallace (we haven't signed anyone) Roos turned out ok for the swans.

If the other options are better sure but I just have my doubts.

Did you see the Swans game a couple of weeks ago? Spike’s papers were marked that day.

Yeah I'd be fine with Spike getting the job, wouldn't be my top candidate but would be fine with it. Really interesting to hear him say he has dramatic changes in mind already and wants the game style to look completely different to how it currently plays. Think it's really difficult to make meaningful change mid-year, a lot of the key structural things are built into the team during pre-season and only minor changes can be made mid season. Seems like he has a really strong passion for the job and wanting it to do well, love hearing it.

I did and if Clarko was coming I'm onboard but the guys we are talking about have done no more than spike as senior coaches. History tells us being a great assistant is no guarantee.

Either way it is a gamble.

No. No. No.

What's really changed since Leon left? We're basically the same team. Sometimes the interim coach gets hired because all the players are cracking in and get unlikely wins. Instead we've still only beaten the worst teams.

Ultimately, whoever is chosen, there's no guarantee they'll be successful - whether they're experienced or a new head coach - and we'll all hold our breath to see what happens. Even if we went for Alistair Clarkson, there's no guarantee that he's still got "it" or that the players buy in, sufficient to win a flag. Similarly, another retread such as Don Pyke or Ken Hinkley come with existing baggage, and neither was successful at their previous clubs. All flag winning coaches, however, were newbies at some point. Some club gives them a go, and if they're lucky, gets rewarded.

Fair enough. Any thoughts about Clarkson and his apparent failure to support the indigenous boys when players and administrators behaved poorly?
Yes.
Don't hand Clarkson the keys to the castle like North Melbourne will.
Go through the process but don't give him too much power...
It doesn't look like Clarkson is happening...but I think North are playing a dangerous game especially with his links to Tassie expansion (CONSPIRACY!).

anyone else feeling like McVeigh might be a big big chance?

No.

Previous senior coaches are a gamble. Eade, Worsfold and Malthouse (Carlton) flamed out. The last re-tread to win a premiership was Malthouse (Collingwood) and before that Leigh Matthews.

Highly rated assistants have the most luck - plenty fail (hey, Leppa!), plenty have moderate success (Leon), but almost all of the recent premiership coaches were either in this group (Hardwick, Simpson, Beveridge, Simpson, Scott, and Clarkson himself) or the next.

Succession planned coaches are probably the least of a gamble, because they're usually at successful clubs with successful coaches - Longmire and Goodwin worked out, but Buckley fell short and the jury's out on Mitchell.

Interim coaches have an amazingly bad record. Shaw was gone after a year. Teague was bad. Ratten hasn't done a heap with St Kilda. A list of "top interim coaches" basically concentrate at the early '00s, and only Roos won a premiership.

Honestly, after writing this up - Yze please. Coached under Clarkson, interviewed for a number of senior positions, experience of multiple successful clubs. All big ticks for guys who took their club to the premiership.

Think McVeigh's out of it for the most part at this point, all the reporting seems to lead to North getting Clarko and us getting Yze.

Yeah YZE seems like who the media are running with (probably for good reason) and he'd be my no1 choice. But I think McVeigh would have a good case at pitching what he'd do from day dot. Obviously he was passed a poison chalice this year....but he's Sydney through and through and even though we are getting our asses handed to us...he clearly has the players. My issue is how badly we are getting beaten in the midfield with a midfield coach as our head coach.
I just wouldn't rule it out.

Big news today. Essendon will sack President, will shortly after sack the coach. Means North might get heartbroken again with Clarko getting to his preferred list. At the same time we are expected to announce Yze.

I think whilst we may have dreamt getting Clarkson the reality is he did not want to leave Melbourne.

We have handled the process incredibly well, whether the end decision is right or wrong we cannot fault the process.

Really happy they've followed a proper process and aren't just fixated on one guy, although it's clear they want Clarko it's great they're interveiwing other candidates as well like Kingsley and Yze.

Would imagine we're third in the pecking order now that Essendon may have opened up their coaching position, if he doesn't pick North then he'd probably pick Essendon over us.

This is what happens when your "process" is so slow you find yourself in a situation were you are now third choice. No reason we have taken so long.

Essendon have got him mate, we are well down the road with other candidates and now do not look stupid and jilted like North.

Fair Dinkum has there ever been a more jilted lover than North Melbourne. Josh didn’t want them, Tasmania don’t want them, Clarko doesn’t want them.

I feel bad for some of their fans, especially the young fella that gets on here, but it is not great.

Ralphy suggesting in the herald sun that the afl will give north picks 1 and 2 if Clarko joins them if that is the case that is a rort. But it is ralphy so he likely made it up.
Really doubt they get pick 2 as well, seems more likely it's a mid-late first
