Welcome back everyone, for what feels like a very early start to the season.

This time a year ago, no one knew what to expect. The COVID malaise of 2020-22 was dispersing. Adam Kingsley was in his first stint as a senior coach and there were questions about the list. No one rated us. We were expected to finish bottom four (although this preview from the ABC proved remarkably prescient):

GWS — predicted 16th

Can they replicate Collingwood's 2022 rise?

There's quite a few similarities between GWS this year and Collingwood entering last year. Both hired ex-Richmond assistant coaches who replicated parts of their gameplay. Both sides were trying to recover from bottom four finishes, partially caused by availability issues.

Last year, the Giants were stodgy, with slow ball movement from turnovers making ball movement tough. During their preseason hit-outs, the Giants looked to move the ball as fast as any side last year, looking heavily inboard.

If everything goes right for them, they could be surprise finals contenders.

Cody Atkinson and Sean Lawson must have channeled Nostradamus when they wrote that.

Will the similarities stop there? Collingwood had their hearts broken by a single point in the 2022 Preliminary Final, got over it, and went all the way. Can we? The punters think we’re a chance.

“Opening Round” sees us play the Magpies in a massive blockbuster at Giants Stadium, so let’s have a look at the possible line-up:

FB [39] Connor Idun, [15] Sam Taylor, [44] Jack Buckley
HB [6] Lachie Whitfield, [7] Lachie Ash, [27] Harry Himmelberg
C [33] Xavier O'Halloran, [12] Tom Green, [22] Josh Kelly
HF [16] Brent Daniels, [26] Jake Riccardi, [14] Toby Bedford
FF [4] Toby Greene, [23] Jesse Hogan, [46] Callum M. Brown
FOL [32] Kieren Briggs, [8] Callan Ward, [3] Stephen Coniglio

IC [19] Nick Haynes, [21] Lachlan Keeffe, [31] Toby McMullin, [5] Aaron Cadman

SUB [28] Jacob Wehr

Callaghan (shoulder), Perryman (hamstring) and Cumming (quad) are out though injury. Unless I’m mistaken, Lachie Ash and Jesse Hogan will return, but who makes way for Hogan? Callum Brown had a bit of an outing against the Suns. Does Kingsley stick with him or Cadman? I suspect Cadman will start off the bench.

I’ve also assumed Daniels recovers from his heel soreness. If he doesn’t, I would give McMullin his spot, move Wehr to the interchange, and let Peatling be sub.

Looking ahead, there’s been a profound change in attitude towards us. During Leon’s era, we were expected to succeed because of draft privileges, which caused a lot of resentment. Whatever respect we had was grudging.

That's largely disappeared. If SEN can be believed, we’re currently the most popular “second” team for Victorians. Spectators at a cricket match were even heard singing the club song. We’re now viewed as a legitimate club.

So where to from here? If we really want a crack at the flag, we must finish top four, preferably top two. Anything less makes it too hard and would be seen as under-performing. And with Opening Round against Collingwood, we won't lack motivation. The team is hungry, and everyone has united behind the game plan.

It’s great for the big, big sound to be back in town, so come on Giants! Let’s get on with it!

Thanks for the write-up! So stoked for the season to start, in fact I can't think of a past season we're Ive been more excited for the Giants and more optimistic with what we can do.

As far as our squad for opening round goes... is it confirmed that Callaghan will be missing? Everything I've read up to this point has said that he's racing the clock to be fit for Opening Round.

I agree that Haynes is the perfect replacement for Cumming, he did really well in the pre-season match. However I really don't think we can play both Keeffe and Cadman, that's going to make us way too tall up forward. Honestly I think Keeffe keeps that spot for Opening Round in order to help nullify Cox's impact. For the following rounds it'll probably be the two of them competing for the same spot.

I do suspect we're going to be outnumbered

I'd be happy with a 50/50 split.

Mind you there are a lot of other teams fans in Sydney. Who DO NOT like Collingwood

They may jump on

But yep. Outnumbered it is haha

If sufficient numbers who view us as their second team attend in support of the Giants could make an impact. Longer term, the club is keen to convert these fans who view us as their second team to become their first and I imagine games like these could assist with that.

21,924 is the Ground Record for AFL games at Giants Stadium (which was against the Swans in 2017). I hope we set a new attendance record on Saturday.

No matter what, at least we will obliterate the record home and away crowd for a non-Swans match at Giants Stadium (15,751 against the West Coast in 2017). Although our two finals games against the Bulldogs got more crowds (21,790 and 19,218), they were however finals.

Have fun everyone won't be going as I'm a member who watches from home nowadays.
Anyway how did Harry Perryman do his hamstring as I'm his former timekeeper at his home club which changed their name over the off season to Collingullie - Wagga Wagga

Yes and this is why it’s important it’s a good game. And giants winning would be huge too. Some of those people walking away saying “that was fun”

FWIW I think the Pies might pip us again. I think they are slightly better and more dynamic when the ball hits the ground. I think we will pip them later in the season if we meet again… if we have guys like Jones and Perryman back.

I dunno, I think if last year's prelim has been fairly umpired we clearly would have won it.

Take away the home ground advantage and the noise of affirmation from them on top of that and we're rightfully coming into this game as favourites.

Not that we're guaranteed to win or anything, it's going to be a tough and hotly contested game. But I'll be tipping us to get the win.

Really only 2 guaranteed best 22 players out in Callaghan and Perryman. Cumming borderline at this stage. Pies have Howe, Mcstay and Murphy out so injuries aren’t an excuse.

I think Haynes plays cause we have a couple out. But he does t really have a position in the team now cause he isn’t in the best 7 defenders and isn’t a mid or forward. But yet is still a very good player.

Whitfield Bucks Ash
XO Green Wehr
Greene Riccardi Bedford
Daniels Hogan Cadman

Briggs Cogs Kelly

Fahey Brown Ward Harvey
Sub: Haynes

Emerg: Aleer Keefe Angwin McMullin

Jeez the injury list actually looks kinda long when you lay it all out like that. At least the only players on that list that might actually be part of the best 22 (Callaghan, Perryman, Jones and Cumming) are also the ones who will be returning the soonest.

Here's my take on our squad for Opening Round.

B: Buckley, Taylor, Idun
HB: Ash, Himmelberg, Whitfield
C: XOH, Green, Haynes
HF: Daniels, Riccardi, Bedford
F: Greene, Hogan, Brown

FOL: Briggs, Cogs, Kelly

INT: Ward, Fahey, Keeffe, Thomas
Sub: Wehr

Haynes takes Cumming's role as that winger who rotates into defence and will be able to play it very well. I also think Keeffe will end up getting the nod over Cadman for this game in order to nullify Cox and prevent Briggs from getting double-teamed in the ruck. But really that could go either way.

I would probably go that way myself. But I think the selectors may fiddle around with a couple of names: potentially Haynes on the wing, Wehr to the bench, Harvey Thomas out, and an experienced player (Angwin or McMullin) as sub. I do like the looks of Harvey Thomas, though, and he can cover all 3 lines. But do we debut him versus Collingwood - there's probably both pros and cons? The other option might be a straight swap of Haynes on field and Wehr to the sub role, leaving Thomas to debut. Hate to think we'd debut him via the sub role (really hated when we did that to Callum Brown!).

Haynsey been on the wing all preseason, so perfect chance for him. He looked great in the practice match as well. I agree with the Keeffe call, but reckon they will give Cads the nod.

So frustrating for Callaghan and Jones to keep having these setbacks, Jones yet to even play a game where stats have been recorded! Always something with Finn as well, foot and shoulder issues have popped up a few times already 3 years in. Sucks we're not going to see Leake and Gothard for a while as well. Doesn't impact the outlook of the team that much imo but some of the most exciting and interesting guys just aren't going to be getting the reps they need to develop. Good that Cadman getting a clean run at it which is so important, the avenue is pretty clear for him to play a lot this year so whether he's ready or not we'll see but the opportunity is there.
