do you think (if) we pick gibbs which despite our ruck problem i think we still will pick him because i believe we approach the draft with the take the best available player method .. and if so then gibbs will be number 1 and when he is playing for the navy blue along side Marc Murphy , do u believe these 2 can be kinda like Judd and Cousins .. if they turn out half as good i will be rappt , and by picking up gibbs our midfield in a couple of years will be definatly the best in the afl .. Marc Murphy , Gibbs , Stevens , Simpson , Bentick , Walker , Kouta ( not for much longer i guess :S ).

Alot of people say we dont have a very good list but .. to be honest i think we can a good team next year .

Gibbs and Murphy would form the nucleus of a very good midfield with support from Simpson, Walker, Blackwell, Stevens and Bentick. We do need another ruckman, but I think we should give McLaren more time to develop. Other than that, I would look at drafting Kruezer in next years draft. :thumbsu:

The prospects of Murphy, Gibbs, Simpson, Walker and Blackwell delivering to the leading Fevola, Kennedy, Fisher and Waite, and the crumbing Betts is really mouthwatering.

*drools*

It would be criminal to pass this opprtunity up.
I agree, with those guys you mentioned, all 22 or younger, plus a couple others rotating through (I'm sure we'll pick some pacey midfielders this draft as others have said), our midfield is set for pratically the next ten years. Ruck is a problem, but so is midfield, and we cannot pass up a gun like Gibbs. A ruckman can be gotten next season or in the PSD, possibly pick Renouf in the NAB and develop our own or trade.

I agree in a few years time we should have a gun midfield if these guys realise their potential:) Very few top draft picks are rucks or defenders so we should go down the Brisbane and West Coast models...develop a gun midfield. Sandilands and Cox for example were rookie elevations. Later picks can bring top defenders and Rucks into a club. It will be a few years before we can tell if our later picks used on defenders so far will work out.

Our main concern isnt the ruck- it isnt where we are getting smashed. Our back half is deplorable, and with the exceptions of Thorton and O'hAilpin, I cant really see any defenders you would assure of being at the club in 2008.

And it has been a concern for the last 5 years and look where we have finished most years. We won't been even a realistic final 4 or even a final 8 chance until we address this problem. Maybe Bowers, Flint and Edwards will be the goods but they are still obviously unproven at AFL level and how good Hartlett will be is very much wishful and speculative thinking considering his form and on going injuries.

I think a lot of supporters would be surprised who competitive this present team would be if we had a couple of tall quality defenders like Scarlett and Rutten to help out Thorton and Sentanta.

You guys are right we are poor at the back, but we don't need to use top draft picks to fix the problem:) Scarlett to use your example Blue Boyz was a father son selection and Rutten was a rookie elevation. Last year was the first time due to the draft restrictions and our false dawn that we have had a real crack at the draft for a fair while. Give those young blokes slated to be defenders a chance to see how they work out. We should also pick up a few more good prospects with later picks this time out. The top picks should be used on gun mids not ruckmen and defenders as history has shown you can pick them up with late picks. Our recruiting department just needs to be smart:D

Actually, it's exactly where we're getting smashed - at the stoppages. That's why the defence is always under the pump.

Although I must admit, a Hansen wouldn't go astray back there.

The main reason we are having scores kicked against us is because we are being smashed in the centre and the ball is coming into our defence to freely, with a better midfield our defence will improve ten fold, and to say we don't have the players to play defence is just wrong, Bower will be a great player for us in defence and Hartlett with an uninterupted pre season will stand up and of course there is Setanta who is looking fantastic and could be anything, also if you have seen his brother play well those 2 could well be champions in the making, they have the biggest hearts in the league and can both play in defence and play similar to each other, with the bonus of either being able to go into the ruck or develop into Adam Goodes types that can play anywhere, throw in Flint who is a hard nut and we have the basis for a good defensive unit already it will just take time and patience.

But with a solid midfield that can break even or come out on top our defence won't be a problem at all, if you think back to the games we have lost this year especially the ones we have been close in it is the midfield that has cost us in the end not the defence. Midfielders will win us games next year and start our march up the ladder which more than anything is what we need not only for the supporters but for the young players so they can get some confidence in themselves and in the direction of the Carlton Football Club.

Gibbs has to be No 1:thumbsu: :thumbsu:

yeh gibbs definently #1 and i think with later picks we should be looking for backmen, ruckman ... and an exlosive midfielder,... we need a rains sorta player in the bak half... I think we should stop picking up 2nd rate midfielders like smith ( im not putting him down but we dont need a team full of 2nd rate centreman)... make a team not a midfield

Renouf would be a good option. He plays regular senior footy at the moment, and in fact, he was best on ground in the prelim on the weekend.

We haven't drafted a quality junior ruckman for ages, so hopefull this year we will at least try to.

Thats the problem mate a modern team is made up of mainly midfielders. Modern football is all about midfielders:) two thirds of a team are now really midfielders rather than the traditional flankers and pockets. Rotations and modern tactics for good or ill means a club needs a number of quality mids to be competitive. Look at what makes the top four so good. Their defenders and ruckmen are mainly rookie promotions, late draft picks and trades:D
