Gil and AFL time to part ways

Brendon Gale ticks pretty much all the boxes but otherwise it's really hard to find someone competent, particularly as sports like to hire from within the sporting bubble rather than open it up to other industries who really have similar challenges. Still, look around the various sporting codes in this country and you soon realise the AFL can do a lot worse than Gil.
I think it would be a very small field to choose from. In reality not many, having spent their teens, twenties and even thirties go on to high level organisation CEO level, except in family/smaller operations. They've automatically lost over a decade of work experience, corporate ladder climbing and management exposure regardless of proficiency or ability.

Richmond sure seem to have struggled under McLachlan. They were definitely much better under Demetriou, Jackson or Oakley.

I for one remember all those premierships Richmond won in the Demetriou era. So many premierships. Then Gillon took over and they've been hopeless. That's the case right. They definitely haven't won 3 of the last 4 flags in Gils era have they?

Don't worry about what we've achieved on the field; off the ground they've been total mother****ers. Gil is blocking Gale from succeeding him. There is bad blood between the club and the AFL.

GTFO Gil you Gestapo-hiring campaigner.

:thumbsu: From a very thoughtful post:

Your aware that demetriou and mclachlans work probably saved North and Footscray right? the ASD was not a thing until the 2000s and the competitive balance fund did not exist before 2002. Prior to the Demetriou it was the stated goal of the executives under Jackson to get rid of Victorian clubs.

Thats as arguable as the rationale that same have that there are too many teams....in Melbourne.

The CEO should be responsible to the Commission, & the above suggests that is not the case.
This is not for McLachlan to correct.

One day a decent journo* will do the work to expose how the development of the game plans were evolved & how they were implemented.
Decisions were considered before we ended up with what we have today.

A strong argument for Benny, lightweight though !! What would Benny bring to the AFL?

Its the Commission itself that needs a thorough going over.

Benny fixed Richmond so is a genius in my book. He apparent has plenty of support at other clubs but AFL House are cold on him.

Very true on the Commission. I went to nearly every game in Victoria for 43 years but stopped going a few rounds into 2021. Not returning until there's a cleanout, and if it needs the AFL to go broke then so be it. Those campaigners stole from me.

About time [emoji849] #StepDownGil

Too many non day Sat/Sun games, been better last two years. DAY FOOTBALL!

Why the desire to spread aflw talent so thin instead of providing a good product?

Does anyone know the rules anymore?

Sent Gold Coast into Melbourne right when covid boomed last year and everyone left Vic that same week last year to play Geelong.

What was with the post R23 bye? Couldn't stop clubs resting players Gil?

Last year the grand finals teams should not have been there but because of the bye and too much rest for qualifying final teams. They lost their prelims.

I'm sure I have more complaints but that's my spit for now!

Imagine how footy fans in other States feel.

Hard to argue with this logic:Benny fixed Richmond so is a genius in my book.

Sparsely populated? Not sure how many would go in Perth but the parade has more people in attendance than the grand final in Melbourne.

Spread over how far? Spring Street to the G is a long way to spread a crowd.

Unless the terrorist is planning an earthquake I would have thought it safer than the ground/ transport to the ground

In Melbourne the crowd trails the parade after it passes to Yarra Park outside the MCG, where the captains are presented holding the premiership cup. A suicide bomber could do maximum damage there.

I think McLaughlin has been ok. Better than the born with a silver spoon in gob background would suggest. Suspect he will stay on until the current CV crisis is resolved one way or another and then move on.

If and when he goes I think Gale must be the front runner for a host of reasons.

Tom Harley could be a surprise candidate.

Agree.

Has there ever been a popular CEO?

Nope, but there have been more widely derided CEOs, inc Vlad. Going back aways, I still hold absolute contempt for Jack Hamilton and then President Aylett.

Having an ex player as the CEO of a national organisation as large as the AFL just because he’s an ex player would be a terrible idea.

Say what you want about Gil, but he’s obviously a very intelligent person and had years and years of corporate experience to take a CEO position. You cannot have a CEO who doesn’t have a corporate/business background.

Only have too look at his experience too see he was a good for the role:
- Bachelor of Commerce degree
- Bachelor of Law (Honours)
- Completed a Senior Executive Program at Stanford university

- In 2000, he was employed as a strategy consultant to the AFL
- In 2003, he was appointed as General Manager of Commercial Operations
- In 2008 was appointed Chief Operating Officer.
- In December 2012, he was appointed Deputy CEO.
- Before taking on the CEO role

Unless there is an ex player with that much experience at the head of an organisation, too think they can just walk in and take over is ridiculous.

Whoever takes his position will need too have similar experience too. Not necessarily from within the AFL but from within a large national corporation or sporting code most likely.
Great post. One of the only mature, sensible ones in this thread. You clearly understand how the real world works; how corporate landscapes work.

Brian Cook can start tomorrow

Gil checked out of the AFL and into the VFL some time ago.

Can't see Benny whole heartedly buying into the whole AFL concept that footy should be equally supported/promoted outside of Melbourne.

Brian Cook has the nouse to easily run the AFL and knows (and acknowldges) the challenges clubs outside of Melbourne face.

Would make a wonderful replacement to hipster Gil.

Knocks?

Not a sycophant to the boys club like GIL and not young.

Gale's perspective on footy, life, truth would all most likely fly in the face of Gil's.
