I like the idea, especially if they're looking at moving the AFLW season so it starts in August and runs over summer

It would mean a dedicated stadium for the AFLW team, plus the VFL & VFLW sides without having to share the stadium with other sports - so if we're going to see cricket and/or soccer played at KP over summer, we've still got a home ground for our womens team

It’s possible, but stuff like this doesn’t come cheap especially With the current redevelopment and the previous covid years setting the club back.

I agree, don’t know where they’ll put this, if they are talking northern suburbs they’ll have to knock down the refinery. 🤣

The North they meantions was the odl Geelong car park between the now Godfreys and the ford plant...cant see that happening. It would be so polluted it would be a environmental nightmare. If the want to build in town there are only a few spot that would pander to the facilities ones needs for 8000 patrons..car parks, trains, grand stands etc. Maybe they could move the KP swimming pool elsewhere...seems a waste in winter with it not doing much.

I think thats the thinking. If you want a foo fighters etc at KP over summer... one cant have it tied up. Training would be a key factor as well. Its just the facts that with more growth in the female game...from the u10's thru to aflw they will have to find solutions.

A good point brought up was a ground for the Geelong Falcons to train at.

I think not only a decent training facility for the Falcons, but also a ground where they can play more then 1 home game a year. (They only play 1 game in Geelong this year)

Highton Reserve isn’t good enough to train at let alone play at for our U/18s and Deakin doesn’t have the facilities. West Oval was supposed to be a candidate for a home base but the cycling track was deemed unsafe.

8,000 doesn’t need to be much: a 3,000 seat grand stand and 5,000 grass embankment for the rest. Similar to gws’ facility at Blacktown, or collingwood’s at Olympic park.

Could they upgrade the cricket ground or st Mary’s? still use existing training facilities in the stadium, and everything else kept minimally.

They would have to demolish the convention centre that is on the site
Although it could go elsewhere in Easten Park, replace one of the ovals on The Ryrie street side. A couple of other potentials, Belmont common (although in a flood risk area) or in the middle of Geelong racecourse

There is not enough room for a stadium there. Silly suggestion.

Ford did remediate the site when they sold it to godfrey hurst though. There was a scrap metal dump on the hillside they had to dig up and fill with clean soil. Probably about 10 or so years ago.

They are now using the women as a smokescreen to get the training base that they have wanted for years now. Its been scuppered twice. They had a deal with some company years ago for them to build them a training facility, which fell through, then they had plans to use the Cora high performance facility which was supposed to be built sonewhere down near the great ocean rd. But it hasn’t progressed through the planning stage yet, as far as i’m aware.

Using the womens game to get a training facility is pretty clever. Kill 2 birds with one stone.

Which one was silly? The KP pool? No doubt it would be tight ..but it would depend on what type of facilitye they want to build. It looks like it has as much room as St Marys for example.

I have often wonder how the swimming pool things stays ...as it seems to do little in winter...ideally a health thing linked to the club would make something from it?

I have no real concept on what they want , on needs plans....but the Ford site would be silly imo. There was all sorts of crap put there in the old days. on and near Cowey creek. It would be expensive I have no doubt if the started a dig it would be like the tunnel up in Melb only worse.

There are only so many spots in Geelong that could have another stadium .. if they build something ..its probably going to upset someone.

Cowies creek was the area i was referring to. You can’t put a stadium there. Entirely silly suggestion.

Geelong Football Club plans 8000 seat stadium for AFLW, VFL program to cater for growth

Readers have shown majority support for the Cats’ plans for a boutique stadium catered to their needs, with one punter calling for the club to take their presence to the northern suburbs.

Readers have shown majority support for the Cats’ plans for a boutique stadium catered to their needs, with one punter calling for the club to take their presence to the northern suburbs.
An online poll of 361 Addy readers showed 57 per cent support for the proposal, revealed at a business function last week.

Some commenters were opposed to the idea fearing taxpayers or ratepayers would be forced to foot the bill for the new stadium, although the club has given no indication they would rely on public funds to bring the project to fruition.

Cats reveal 8000-seat stadium plan

The Geelong Football Club wants to build a boutique stadium and training facility within five years to cater to the “explosion” of women’s footy and the professional demands of a four-team club.

The Cats are exploring options for a stadium with a seating capacity of up to 8000 people in “close proximity” to GMHBA Stadium, which would host games and training for AFLW, VFL, VFLW, and “potentially” Geelong Falcons games.

Geelong Football Club chief operating officer Simon Kelleher said the venue, still at concept stage, was needed to “facilitate and accelerate” the growth of women’s football and further bolster the professional environment it provided.
St Mary's going to get a nicely upgraded oval?

Commonwealth Games announcement - no athletics in Geelong, but we get the T20 cricket; any further upgrades needed before 2026?

The Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games will be the regional games for regional jobs.

Four regional hubs will be established in Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and Gippsland, each with an athletes' villages. Shepparton will also host events, and the MCG will host the opening ceremony.

Affordable housing and modern sports infrastructure built for the games will leave a legacy and attract future major events.

And of course, it's going to create thousands of jobs. 600 before the first sports start, 3,900 during the games, and 3,000 beyond the Closing Ceremony.

Victoria 2026 is going to welcome the world to every corner of our state.

Here are the sports so far:

Aquatics (Swimming, Para Swimming and Diving) - Geelong
Athletics and Para Athletics - Ballarat
Badminton - Gippsland
Beach Volleyball - Geelong

Cricket T20 - Geelong, Gippsland, Ballarat, Bendigo

Victoria 2026 is going to welcome the world some former British colonies to every corner of our state within 150km of Melbourne.

Swimming and hockey would involve pretty substantial works (both temporary and permanent), so probably good ones to get for Geelong. Cricket will allow good exposure, assuming Geelong get the medal matches and aus matches which seems logical compared to Bendigo, Ballarat and Gippsland. Cycling would have been good down the great ocean road, but triathlon not too bad.

With the swimming & diving, no doubt they'll be using Kardina swimming complex - already got the pool infrastructure, 2 x 50m pools (including a 10-lane FINA standard pool, plus an 8-lane Olympic pool). Would just need temporary seating, thinking something similar to what they did with the GC games

I'd assume cricket medal matches at KP - with Ballarat being used for athletics, I'm guessing that would be Mars Stadium, and not sure if they'd have another venue large enough for the medal events, so KP seems the logical choice

Hockey is the interesting one - apparently Bendigo has brand new hockey facilities, but it seems Torquay is getting some of their own, so maybe that will be the base for the hockey comp
