I think one of the major problems with Ansett was their diverse fleet of aircraft types. Abeles was wined and dined by all the aircraft manufacturers and bought planes from all of them, on long term leases/purchase plans. Ansett was locked in to this. He fancied himself as a 'player' in the international airline scene perhaps. Maintenance costs for Ansett were crippling, along with the documented poor business decisions the company made. Cant recall the exact figures, but a report in The Age just after the airline went under stated the maintenance costs were something of the order of 30% higher than Qantas, simply because of their stupid fleet purchase/leasing decisions. Don't think the company was 'under the control' of the unions, as Senator Frodo McCarthy has suggested.

BTW Dipper's Donuts its funny that you blame the 'racist' swing in voting in Australia on pommie migrants when as my experience shows there is a racist attitude to us in Australia whilst no one in England ever grumbles about the large numbers of Aussies working here of 'taking English jobs'.

Secondly your 'liberal blinkers' seem to have blinded you to the fact that it is just as possible to be predujiced against Anglo Saxon pommies as it is towards anybody else. That you can sit there making sweeping generalisations about English people & using generally derogatory language whilst at the same cosidering yourself a champion of fair minded liberalism beggars belief.
In my experience those people that shout about how liberal they are & criticise others for their right wing leanings are usaully in their own way as guilty of intolerance as anyone.

What the hell are you babbling on about?
I have never been racist about my election musings.
I made a valid point (a point that political commentators such as Laurie Oakes, Peter Charlton etc have also made) Namely, in federal seats in States such as WA which have a disproportionately high percentage of English migrants; the swing towards the coalition was higher than the national average. Commentators believe that a large part of this swing is due to these migrants taking the "last one in close the doors" point of view.

How is that racist? Please elaborate..

So there, piss off ya pommy git.

I thought about this. If you are a migrant (I am) or of migrant parents then you would likely be disgusted by Howard's behaviour.

However If you were a migrant and have relatives who unsuccessfully tried to get here, you might think the boat peple might somehow be taking your relative's 'place'.

So it could work either way
