I think one of the major problems with Ansett was their diverse fleet of aircraft types. Abeles was wined and dined by all the aircraft manufacturers and bought planes from all of them, on long term leases/purchase plans. Ansett was locked in to this. He fancied himself as a 'player' in the international airline scene perhaps. Maintenance costs for Ansett were crippling, along with the documented poor business decisions the company made. Cant recall the exact figures, but a report in The Age just after the airline went under stated the maintenance costs were something of the order of 30% higher than Qantas, simply because of their stupid fleet purchase/leasing decisions. Don't think the company was 'under the control' of the unions, as Senator Frodo McCarthy has suggested.
