Get Talia, Alex Johnson and Sam Reid back in the team will make a big difference as well as increased gametime for the likes of Papley, Mills, Heeney, Aliir, Jones, Hewett etc

You must remember Boyd is a number 1 draft pick in any other year. The Dogs have a number of first round picks compliments of being crap for a few years after playing in 3 losing prelims.
We haven't had the benefit of being rewarded with multiple high draft picks for being crap. So we have players without the skill set of the Bulldog's list.

They've been able to gradually inprove their list over the last 4 years while we have had to endure a two year trade ban.
The GF had us behind the eight ball before we started..
We'll be right.
Skills, aptitude, talent and potential takes you a long way...but mental strength, poise, decision making, determination.....they can't have it all......at least that's what we.ve been told.....sort of.

We've got the cattle to win the flag. Best team in 2014 and got smacked. Were the best team in the GF this year and got outplayed.
There is something else missing it is not talent because the 2012 team were nowhere near as talented as our last 2 grand final teams.
Fair assessment. I reckon we are missing blokes who are dogged and stubborn, missing blokes who have a touch of mongrel who do more than either bare their teeth or grit them and probably the most contentious point - they do not put the welfare of their mates on a pedestal. Too often I see our blokes have their noses shoved in the dirt, or catch elbows or arms pinned they are slung into the dirt. These should be actions of "No tolerance." Offenders need to feel the heat of reprisal and their victims need to know that their team mates are looking out for them. LRT, Andrew Dunkley, Mummy and Barry Hall were our enforcers in teams past. If any of them had been playing ( when in their prime ) in our team on Saturday, the game would have changed dramatically. Teams don't show us enough respect. Jetta was pole axed in 2014 and Hanners and Jack were pile driven and shirt fronted. Sometimes you can be too disciplined for your own good. Sometimes for the sake of team morale you need to see a demonstration of righteous fury and indignation. And umpires need to see that their lack of action will force players taking reprisal as their only way of achieving justice. Keeps umps honest. We did not do this. We don't seem capable.
We expect good honest footy to be rewarded. And mostly it is. But when umpires don't protect your play makers, you must have someone or everyone who takes on that responsibility. I reckon it is the canker in our team.

Gee imagine that. Didn't watch it, but sympathize.

Keep Toby Nankervis too.

I can see how one could make such a conclusion, and frankly I wouldn't be entirely unhappy in such a circumstance, although I prefer we hang on to all three of them at this stage.

I love Rohan and his endeavour, but I do wonder if it will ever 'click' for him at the Swans - and whether a move elsewhere could be the best move for everybody. I would give him another season at least though - if he can have a full pre-season this year it may make all the difference (he hasn't had many of those).

Tippo will always divide opinions - his first half of the season before the hamstring was excellent however - in that form he is worth every $. But as we saw later on in the season, it takes him time to find a head of steam and to get going again after injury, and a not quite 100% tippo is only a fraction of a player of a fully fit Tippo.

This is where we need to change I feel. Its clear that no longer good honest footy necessarily gets rewarded in more cases or not - unless your part of a grander 'fairytale'.

We need to find a bit more of an edge at times - players like Jones can help provide that in time, but we need to find a bit more of it when necessary, in games where we may be not getting reward for endeavour, or where the opposition take it up to us like GWS did.

"Keep your inside mid, trade out your speed and key position players"

*facepalm*

Not sure I agree.
1. We haven't had to play dirty to get where we are.
2. Grand Finals and the like are when you put it all on the line, if you get knocked over you have to get up and go again.
3. Our lack of leadership in games where we've been found has been obvious.
4. Everything goes to shit at the same time, we run out of legs, our skills go to shit, our game plan goes to shit and we get cruelled by the umps. This is when our leaders should stand up.

Rohan's a pretty unique player. Can't think of anyone else with his speed + tackling pressure + versatility + marking ability in the comp

You make him sound like one of the best players in the league. He spends much of the game out of the action and his handful of eye-catching moments are enough to convince people that he will one day become a high output performer.

Going almost completely missing in 2 Grand Finals is also unique.

We did everything so well this year to post such a solid H&A season, finish first and make the grand final.

We just had to play with more confidence, instinct & desire to win it at the end.

That's it.

Significant advances in responsibility in the leadership will help immensely.

Watch this again:

Have a look at the instinctive nature and the boys backing their abilities, desiring the thrill and glory of victory and being bold enough to strive for it and ride that wave home.

As opposed to the Hawks players that day who you could see from three minutes to go - from the moment Sewell sprayed his second flying shot - that they began to build a fear for the eventual outcome and weren't focused on getting the win, and despite their admirable efforts they looked beaten bystanders in the last two minutes (like us on Saturday).

Those leaders Goodes, Richards, Malceski, Shaw, Mattner, Bolton, ROK, LRT and even AJ, Reid and Morton were so instinctive and committed all day and they had to be if we were going to win that day.

Pykey's toe-poke to Jetta moments before the Malceski winning goal symbolised how we were playing on instinct and confidence in each other that day, if he feared losing instead of striving to win he may not have made the same decision.

Those guys inspired the rest to lift to the occassion.

We need to find that somewhere from this group next year.

Not a matter of playing dirty - sniping and striking behind play. It is a matter of standing up for yourself and your team mates when they have been dealt with unfairly and the umps have turned a blind eye. That's when you have to take a stand and return the favour face to face. Let em see you coming.

Exactly. No backwards steps when the other team is dishing it out and we need self righteous and angry Captains who take on umpires for non decisions when our players are being "taken out". Agree with Jones - he's made of the right stuff. But he can't be the lone ranger out there.

Nah not at all just don't think he's that easy to replace. Just needs to work on his consistency, hopefully a full uninterrupted pre-season and a good start to 2017 might help him achieve that.

He is a unique player, but just how long can we keep hoping the potential turns into consistent week in, week out performances. Injuries have cruelled him, but he still goes missing like he is a first year senior player. When he is on he is great, but that is far too rare and when he is off his game, he stinks (not the only to fall into that category).

I think 2017 is a make or break year for his career - with an uninterrupted preseason hopefully he can start 2017 well and build from there. But another disappointing year and we might just see what we could get for him at the trade table.

Rohan is as useful as a chocolate teapot when it counts

Imagine when Rohan and Reid both hit their potential hey

In all fairness I'm less harsh on Rohan only because he provides us with something harder to find than a swingman who can mark the ball. But I do see your point, and everyone's point. I agree with the comment above ^ that 2017 is probably a make or break year for Rohan, in that if he goes MIA a lot next year after a full pre-season, the excuses will stop coming and i'll just go full McVeigh on him.
