I would bring Adams in Gawn and Petracca in the middle for Melbourne are very important players for them.

I'd bring Adams in but not necessarily in the midfield would be game dependant but I'd rather back Sheldrick etc and give this new mix a few weeks

Imo, the ladhams scissor kick was the highlight of the game for me. Hope he goes for it again.
I would've thought the efforts of a say Heeney, Chad and Grundy getting us over the line in a tough game to keep our season alive would be the highlight
Imagine if he kicked it and we lost , but it was still the highlight

I have shown him the data that shows McLean isn't the problem for pressure forwards and in fact statistically provides more pressure than Ladhams. He just refuses to believe it and goes on about McLean being slow being the problem, when in fact its actually been the other small players not pressuring thats causing the lack of forward pressure (again can be proven statistically)

My eye test/gut feeling is Mclean when playing well moves quite well, it's more a consistency problem gut feel

I know three Carlton fans - unrelated to each other, and all three would kill to have the success we have had. While it may only be 9 games, it's the way those games have shaped seasons and our finals performances (bar grand finals) that really highlights the differences between the two teams.

Oh Sydney are better but I don't think the Blues are rolling out 16 spuds a week or anything and the gap isn't as big as we might wish.

If Adams is in, it's got to be midfield most of the time. Push Heeney forward more, get Adams to run with someone and play JJ only on the wing if needed.

If Adams is mostly going to play forward, better to bring Hanily in instead.

Leaving aside bare stats for a moment, which have their limits. I suspect because we target McLean more often than we would Ladhams, you might expect him to be in an easier position to get some pressure stats if the ball hits the ground or is a bit wayward. Ladhams might have to work a bit harder for his up forward, although he would get more in the middle of the ground.

In any case, if it's a choice between the two, right now, I'd stick with Ladhams, partly for the additional benefit to Grundy. McLean certainly didn't earn a spot. If based purely on last weekend, Buller earned it more and McLean has been given ample chances.
But then you also factor in that Brodie Grundy rucks less with Ladhams in the side than McLean and thus Ladhams would therefore be around the contest more than McLean. So for McLean to have better pressure stats rucking less time means he applies more pressure around the ground

We need to bring in three players - Adams, McLean and ??? Who's the third if it's not Mills?

Florent in, Hanily as sub or next best VFL player. No to playing Mills off half a game, it's just so brainless like it was last year but last year was worse as we did it whilst 2 and a half games in front!

No to McLean anyway Buller was better in the VFL, or we go smaller which I hope we do and play Heeney more FWD.

Too slow and he backed himself up by being a good kick at goal , but that has deserted him lately and if you watched the 2's he was ordinary
Problem is that Ladhams is even more ordinary than McLean in the 1s, its almost trying to fit a rectangle into a square hole. Might need to get a MSD KPF to solve the problem

Buller is not ready for AFL yet, perhaps later in the season if out of the finals race.BUT to be fair to Buller he is playing in a very ordinary VFL side with all the injuries we have at the moment.Hopefully Fox getting on the park in the VFL next week end?

That's pretty much what I said, that it's probably easier for McLean to get pressure stats up forward, and Ladhams more in the middle...

I also said having Ladhams benefits us by Grundy rucking less (and appears fresher over the whole game).

That's true , just can't believe he got o the level with no footy brain

Purely as a KPF yes, though McLean hasn't given us a lot recently.

As a relief ruck and the benefit to Grundy, I think McLean's forward advantage is at least offset by Ladhams, based on McLean's current form.

We do need an actual KPF in this week though, but it doesn't have to be McLean.

Grundy rucks 75% this year with either Ladhams or McLean. Arguably Ladhams takes more out of the opposition/wins more hitouts though I can't see the evidence of that.
Neither is a matchwinner at the moment but McLean's confidence is well down. That said, putting Buller up against a top flight defender is crucifying him. Don't do it. Get in McLean's ear and try to get the best out of him.
Play Hamling back so at least we have two reasonable key defenders, Florent comes in to replace McInerney which he had been doing the previous week and Hanily is the third person in to make the attack livelier.
Adams as sub.

Looking at the last 2 weeks, a very small snapshot, McLean had 0 hitouts from 13 ruck contests, Ladhams had 5 from 19.

The Dees have May and maybe Lever as their better taller defenders. I don't have any confidence McLean does much against May either, so I'm fine with playing Buller. He played better in the VFL.

The message to any talls this week anyway is to bring the ball to ground and nullify opponent intercepting.

I'd play Adams in the 22 so Heeney can be a target forward.

If Mills isn't ready yet I'd be playing Adams but if they believe Mills is ready then I'd be playing Mills over Adams

Well Mills is better, if fit, it's a no brainer.

But if they think Mills is ready after such a break and limited footy last year, to play as much in midfield as Adams can, with the associated risk being acceptable, then I'd question the decision makers.

Otherwise, why play Mills only half the VFL game. If he's ready to play a full seniors game, this seems like our VFL coaches stuffed up and took him off too early.

They said he was only going to play a half in the VFL on Thursday before the AFL team was even announced

I'm aware. You just missed my point.

If the club thinks he's ready to play a full seniors game this week, then he was ready to play more than half a VFL game last week. So my point was did the VFL coaches stuff up, or are we not actually sure he's ready for a full seniors game, but desperation will have influenced us if he plays.

Edit: Or maybe the club got it wrong by only putting him down for a half, in which case if you're potentially playing him in seniors the next week, you let him keep playing if he seems fine.

He was hence I didn't suggest bringing him in. But at times he has been quite agile, the gap between his best and worst is too
large imo
