Ground sizes - the real facts

The area of an elliptical isn't actually that simple, of the numbers you quoted the SCG is actually 93.4% of the size of the MCG.

16.556km2 compared to 17.718km2

No wonder the players get tired so quickly nowadays.

Lets call it 16,556m2 compared to 17,718m2 then

A square 155m x 136m is 21,080m2 isn't it?

Correct.
You can't just divide by 1,000 and change it to km2 like you did earlier.
There are actually 1 million square metres in a square km, so you need to divide by 1 million.
MCG = 17,718m2 or .017718km2 or 1.7718 hectares.

It also doesn't factor that grounds have different depth of pockets.

Someone one have an overlapping graphic to show how the grounds compared to each other which illustrated this very well

True, if you look on Google Earth you can see the G is pretty much a perfect ellipse, so that area calculation would be pretty accurate.
However the SCG is an odd shape, 2 of the pockets/flanks are shallower. On of the wings is narrower, the longest part of the ground is off centre. That area calculation would be slightly out.

Also the 50m line is definitely 50m, its just that the ball travels further in Sydney which means players that normally cant kick over a jam jar can give it a roost from 53
lol mate you can measure from the 50m to the goal on google maps if you like. It’s 50m

Unless you’re suggesting AFL house have got their hands on google’s satellites.

Can’t rule it out.

Found the one with the SCG on it.

i wonder why they don't put the cameras on the other side of docklands?
can clearly see the orientation is the wrong way compared to mcg, perth, subi
would that help with broadcasts, shadows etc?

Not really.
They try and have the cameras on the North/West side of the ground to avoid looking into the sun in the afternoon. They are on the west side at Etihad.

rather than build aami park where they did, I wonder if they should have reconfigured docklands to be a rectangular ground, and built a 40000 capacity footy ground where aami is instead...
