Hmmm - maybe mine does as well. I set it up to go to Viet Nam in 1996. I think I managed to send just one or two emails though when I got there as the very few Internet cafe's that existed used dial-up and it was unreliable. I found a place to stay in Hanoi called the Love Cafe that had an internet service that worked although I spent some time fixing things up for the owner. I got a few free T-Shirts with Love Cafe printed on them - and yes... most people thought it was the Hanoi equivalent of Tender Touch (which it wasn't). Although my wife and I did stay in such an establishment in Bangkok one night but that is a different story.
how cool was nam in the early days, i remember the first time i went there ATMs literally didnt exist and you had to get money by rocking up to a post office and making a manual visa cash advance......

first time i went to nha trang they had thatch beach bars.... iirc one was called the rainbow club, the nha trang sailing club had just been built, last time i went there the whole beach strip was wall to wall with hotels and the like, long gone were the old beach shacks.

mumma hann was still doing her boat tours between bouts in jail, they ware crazy days, spliffs being passed around and the infamous floating bars.... , now the boat tours are full of locals singing karaoke.

We went on Mamma Hahn's boat tour at Nha Trang as well. I must have been a bit innocent as I thought it was going to be a boat tour ;)

Out on the sea, we had a bit of a swim and a feast (which turned into a food fight). Then a bag of hooch appeared on the deck along with a big esky of beer at $1 US per can. To quote her, the "****-****" is free and you pay for the beer when the tour is finished".

All of these dopers were digging in when suddenly, a speedboat approaches. Mumma starts screaming to ditch the weed because it's the cops. She negotiates with the cop on the boat - everybody, pay $5 or you will go to jail. The cop duely collects a USD $5 from everybody and then heads off towards another of Mumma's tour boats.

We head back towards the harbour and at that time she starts asking how much beer each person drank - $1 per can. She claimed that the tally was short - everybody pay $1 or we won't go back to shore. Eventually enough people paid and we end our tur.

Bless her and her little green hat.

Sadly, the Nha Trang beach was littered with used syringes which put us off a bit.

We got an ANZ account especially as we heard there were ANZ's in VN. Went to the ANZ bank in Hanoi but the ATM wasn't working. They said to come back next day but it still wasn't working. It was only then I asked how long it had been broken. Apparently it had never worked.

I ended up working with an ex ANZ guy who did a lot of work in the AP region. He told me that the Hanoi ATM was a standing joke for a really long time - it was almost always dead.

We had AMEX travellers checks and a fist full of US dollars (although Aussie dollars were OK for exchange in the bigger cities).

Funniest Viet Nam adventure was when we stayed at a small town on the Mekong Delta. Apart from my wife and I, we were with a friend of mine and by this stage we'd hooked up with an English guy who was ex army. He had been deployed in a couple of assignments but was moaning that he'd never got to fire a shot in anger. Anyway, our hotel was a bit out of town so we hitched a ride on a donkey cart into the town for dinner. After eating and partaking in some local brews, we set out to find our way back to the hotel but it was now dark and there were no street lights. It was really dark actually - just a bit of moonlight and we were not really even certain if we were going the right way.

My wife had a torch, but the army guy insisted on walking in front as he was a gung-ho type. As he was walking in front, telling us about his army training he suddenly vanished with a bit of a splash. Waist deep in an open sewer. And talk about stink!!!

We dragged him out and got to the hotel where we had to hose him down out the front where the tourist busses were parked.

we actually went to mui ne a bit further on which was really chilled, they were just beginning ot build some resorts all low end bungalow style, it was a lovely place, local farmers walking thir cows along the beach every morning and a fishing fleet which supplied the local fish saice factory that you could smell from about 100 meters down the road. i beleive that has become a bit of a russian tourism destination now.

In the early days of being open for tourism it was a really interesting and somewhat innocent place (compared to Bali, Thailand etc.).

I recall in Hue, we went to a restaraunt run by a deaf family - we bought lunch but as street vendors went past the family who ran the place would run out and they would buy fruit and fried food for us to try - they paid!!!

We were able to get around in the bigger towns and on the route between Hanoi and Saigon but there were permit systems for travel outside the main cities.

Maybe we need a travel reminicence thread!!!

And that controversy has us down to 91 posts left
Grumble grumble.

Only 90 now.

My father in law (against my advice) got a 2MB per month account about 20 years ago with Telstra. Even then, windows updates wiped his entire monthly data allowance which was bad. We killed the account as it was terrible value. After 20 years he still has access to the bigpong email account and he actually uses it. He has not been a Telstra customer for any service whatsoever for at least 10 years.

Sounds like my father.

Does this give anyone else the 5hits? I buy a coffee in a takeaway cup and it has the little drinking spout. They only work well when the little hole opposite is open so the air flows. Then why do 90% of the lids have the mark but not a hole right through? FFS. How simple is that process? Then I have to find a pen or something to make the final breakthrough so the coffee flows.

This is the best post in this thread.

Ultimate coffee blend. The earthy Ethiopian for flavour and who doesn't love a Brazilian?

Mixed results I have seen

If you can afford it get a new one and then add windscreen insurance to your Policy
$260 for a triton windscreen changeout from our protector windscreens bloke , but he said come back in 3 months because the local road resurfacers have just got a grant to do a heap of resurfacing in the meantime,

Qu

Quoted best part of a grand for a windscreen for the ranger
sheesh, prolly not far of the mark looking at this quote.... Ford Front Windscreen Glass For Everest Ua & Ranger Px

wonder if any of these things are the reason they are so expensive?

Modern vehicles now have rain sensors, heated windscreens, light sensors, heads up displays, solar reflective windscreens, lane departure warning systems and who knows what else, but what we do know is all these gadgets add to the price of replacing a windscreen.
