Good post JD, Fevola trade is massive win for Carlton, McClean V Gysberts not so much.
Warnock looks like he's coming on, we are pretty happy with Suban so win win.
a pick around 18 seems fair for one of the best 3 or 4 fullbacks in the comp. He's exactly what you need to have a tilt while Judd is still capable of playing games like he did on the weekend. Pick 18 is an unknown quantity.

Wont that give him to Gold Coast? Assuming he does want to return to melbourne and not join Solly at GC at least GC will ensure that clubs have to make a deal and can't threaten to pick him up in the draft.

Thinking much the same thing, if the Suns don't pick up one of our uncontracted players then the next best thing for them might be to nominate and on-trade Taz.

End result could be we end up with a pick at the end of the first round (using Bock as a guide) which would be far better than the "let's split the difference and settle on pick 35" nonsense.

no chance in hell pick 18 or 19 would be given for Tarrant. His 30 and his got knee problems.

Wrong on the injuries. Nothing career-threatening.

His health is fine, he is over his shin complaints that crueled his last few yrs at the Pies. This year he had a heel complaint that kept him out for 3 weeks and he had a MCL. He has not struggled with injuries.

Agree that Carlton or Hawks won't part a pick below 20.

Heck, they will be pointing to the Bock compensation of an end of first round pick for a guy that is younger than Tarrant and was also All-Australian and also has had a few injuries. If Bock is around pick 28, then Taz would be worth less.

The key for us would be to get some competitive pressure from Hawthorn, Carlton and St Kilda and whoever else is interested.

The other option is to involve Gold Coast in the trade. Remember that Gold Coast have a raft of players and picks that they can trade including a lot of mature aged picks where they have priority access. If we don't like anything the Hawks etc are offering we could go for something like this:

  • Taz to Gold Coast
  • Gold Coast agree to use their priority rights to pick up Stephen Clifton, Ed Curnow or Orrel Stephenson or whichever mature aged guy we want and they trade them to us with a draft pick (i.e pick 30 - their second rounder).
  • Gold Coast on-trade Taz to Carlton for Andrew Walker (I don't want him here); or
  • Gold Coast on-trade Taz plus Rory Thompson (18 yo ruckman, Saints need a young ruckman) to St Kilda for Sam Gilbert (Queenslander). Gold Coast already have two gun ruckmen in Charlie Dixon and Zac Smith (these kids would both be top 10 picks), they don't need three.

Hey Carlton09

I'd take Armfield or Walker in a second for Taz....but here's a few players I'd be stoked to get hold of for the ageing Taz....from Carlton -

...Armfield - is a local boy with Wojcinski like pace...imagine him & Hilly across Subi oval :thumbsu::thumbsu:...kid is only going to get better

...Walker...only 23-24, bagged 3 goals in elimanation final as a defensive forward & had injury issues but appears over them & I think has a lot to offer as a swingman/utility type

...looking at Hawks list....

Jarryd Morton..local boy, has all the skills in the world & just needs to realise like his older bro' Mitch finally did in last month of season, if he goes in hard he will be rewarded...I see him as a Mundy-type midfielder

Carl Petersen...exciting forward, who can mark & tackles like Chopper

...Collingwood possibilities...

Tyson Goldsack - again on the outer of best 22 at the Pies but I see him as a valuble defender & can't believe he's not in their best 22. He'd be my number 1 choice but will depend if Mick is even interested in getting Taz anyway, which I highly doubt

...North Melbourne may be interested linking up Taz with his younger bro'

Cruize Garlett - probably not a fair trade for Roos, but if we could pull it off you never know. Great inside player & second half of the year proved he has what it takes to be an elite mid

Taking a look in the rear-view mirror-

Tarrant's career with us has outlived Polak's, and I am not sure what will happen with Medhurst. And he has more games for us than many top 10 picks (Drum comes to mind). It seems here most posters think his current value is around pick 18-ish. If he was four years younger, what would his value be? I think we over-paid for him, but perhaps not by all that much.

Bateman for Tarrant.

Hawks really can't spare what few speedsters they have, not that Bateman was particularly quick on Saturday. Definitely lost a yard or two of pace to injury this year which is not surprising as he is 29.

Which is why Taz is more valuable - he might get slower as he gets older, but he won't get shorter or (if he keeps to his gym programme), weaker.

I think Hawthorn will offer what ever pick we get for Campbell Brown.

So we are essentailly swapping Brown for Tarrent.

What happens if Hawthorn offered their compensation pick for Brown ... does it come with the "use whenever you like in the next 5 years" clause?

And the slot after which the compensation pick can be used, be it mid-round or end-round, does that transfer to the the club which receives the pick? Or does it stay as Hawthorn's position in whatever year the other club uses it? They could potentially trade it to WC and it would be worth a lot more to WC than it is to us.

I don't rate Brown whatsoever, he is all just huff and puff, quite an average footballer and not what we need. Couldn't care less if he was an AA, would go down as the worst decision in the history of AA selections. If Bock is worth an end of 1st rounder (third band), then Brown would be in the 4th or 5th band ... something like an end of 2nd round selection at best I reckon. Can't see what Hawthorn get for Brown being sufficient for Taz, even at 30 years of age.

Good point, don't know about the status of picks that are passed on.

And while I agree with you on Brown, the AFL has a "formula" for determining the band a player falls into, and AA is one of those criteria (along with B&F finishes, games played etc). This should help over-value Brown and secure us a better draft pick.

Freo haven't made any big trades recently so no I can't really bring up anything recent.. I would hardly call drafting Kepler, McPhee and Solomon at the end of drafts outstanding because no other clubs were interested in them.. Your 2008 and 2009 drafting was the best of any club. Hill, Walters, Broughton, Morrabito, Fyfe, Barlow. Trading I can't make comment on because you haven't made any trades in the last few years.

We are hardly the trade table bitches... Let's see our last few big trades

Carlton Receive
Chris Judd
Pick 47 (Dennis Armfield)
West Coast receive
Pick 3 (Chris Masten)
Pick 20 (Tony Notte)
Josh Kennedy Easy carlton win there

Carlton Receive
Brock Mclean
Melbourne Receive
Pick 11 (Jordan Gysberts) Looks like a bad trade for us so far, so melbourne win that one so far although I don't rate Gysberts that much

Carlton Receive
Lachie Henderson
Pick 12(Kane Lucas)
Brisbane Receive
Brendan Fevola
Pick 27(Callum Bartlett) Fev has been sacked today so easy Carlton win

I could also throw in the Warnock for Suban trade.. Last year Freo fans were laughing at Carlton.. I think that has quitened up a bit

Just quietly I'd like to throw in that I actually have a soft spot for your team
Point taken. So in your opinion, what existing player would be a worthy trade for Tarrant (acknowledging that he would easily fit the KPP in your back line that you are so sorely missing)?

This guy skews your theory

Just looked up Campbell Brown's stats. 27yo and only 178cm - I thought he'd be taller than that...

hmmmm maybe he is better off up at the GC.
