Lose to second place on the ladder and we are no good hacks who have no chance at a premiership. Wake up people!

I think the point some are trying to make is that even if Geel were last, they would still have the mental edge over us!! Its a mental thing, not a physical thing!

Yeah I know but I am not very good at these "mental and emotional" type feelings (Ask my wife ;))

Look at it from a logical perspective people -

11 game "curse" - During a time when the other team has been spoken about in the same light as the Hawks of the 80's. They ARE a dynasty team and deserve as much credit as they get for that. I feel sick.

We have NEVER allowed them to blow us out of the water regardless of how poorly we have played, like on Saturday night. That coul dhave become a 10 goal thumping quite easily.

There were 2 things abundantly clear on Saturday night. 1. The Cats were ON. They played great football somewhere near their best (Scott and Hunt have both said as much). We were poor and for 3 qtrs were NOTHING like our free flowing selves. We played 15 minutes of footy that was close to our usual brand and got within 3 points of a team that had monstered us for 3 - 1/2 qtrs.

We just need to identify how to play OUR best footy against the CATS. And for all this talk about us not being up to it in big games. We lost the GF last year and won in 08. We WON the PF last year for those that are citing that as a game where we choked and these CATS games are H&A games between 2 very fierce competitors. One of which is touted as one of the best teams to ever pull on a geurnsey. We WILL get over them and we ARE still a big threat for this years flag. Maybe this win will put the pressure on the CATS as the flag favourite.

Astonishing.

Are you telling me that the coaching group failed in their preparation for this game and/or the players are buggered after a tough start?

Not mentally tough enough

burgoyne has played some great football this year...he may not be as quiick as he once was..but his poise and precision have saved us time and again off the half backline...and when thrown in the middle, he always delivers...bit stiff to be calling for him to be dropped

bottom line - we havent been playing that well for a while now and it is going to cost you against another contender....and we still almost pinched it....

we're doing ok

good to see dureya and hill have an influence in a high pressure game...they will be better for it next time we meet a top side or play finals footy....

Well they'd be wrong IMO. Of course if Geelong were a team like Melbourne or GWS we would beat them. It's much less of a mental thing than most people realise.

I don't know, I always thought that, but in this game the boys seemed to be hanging their heads from the first siren.
The first quarter they looked like they had already been playing for a half, and were 100 points behind.

Nothing to lose in a grand final? You must be joking. Both teams in a GF have EVERYTHING to lose. Especially a team that should have won it the year before.

You are obviously close to at least one of the players at HFC. After each loss we hear the same thing, "the players are hurting, we'll learn from this, just need a bit more composure", yet nothing seems to change. They don't learn from our losses to the cats, they don't show any hurt from previous games (well, except for the mental scars), and they certainly don't show any composure.

This isn't about a curse against the cats, it is about our inability to turn the tide when a team turns the heat up on us. Sydney did it twice last year, Geelong have done it for years, and Adelaide even did it in the prelim last year with the only thing saving our blushes being the massive gap in talent between the two teams. Now I know you will cite the comebacks against Geelong and Sydney last year when we were 50 points down, but showing fight when then there is nothing left to lose is not tough. The tough thing to do would be to show that fight as soon as the heat is turned up. But we don't.

I could cop these losses if I saw us playing good footy, and losing to a better side. But again last night, the team I saw was nothing like what we have seen for most of the season. If we played that footy all season, we would be middle of the road. So why the big drop in performance every time we play the cats?

The aim is to play your best footy in September, not July. Remember how we smashed Collingwood in the later rounds of last season (sometime in August)? Brilliant football. Remember the finals against Adelaide and the Swans (September)? Nothing like the way we played in August. Point is, seasons are all about ebbs and flows in form. At the point end, form can improve (say, this year or 2008) or wane (last year). It's all in the timing.

As good as he has been this year Luke Bruest needs a rocket, continuely in the big games he misses clutch goals from set shots, and easy shots at that, hopefully he gets his mojo back for the business end of the season. I gather that when its time for him to re-negotiate his contract his pay packet reflects how he lets us down when it matters most. he is not robinson crusoe by the way.

Losses expose weakness and we need to bring up our weaknesses so its not all bad.

Really think we lack the bigger stronger bodies to compete in close against the big bodied cats.

Lacked so much drive from back line, so much of our attack comes from half back and we didn't have the run. Whitecross back there was a bit rusty, but isn't the type of player to get the run going from half back.

Hill has gone past Isaac smith Imo. I have said this before about smith, but he is the type of player who doesn't have a high ceiling of potential. I think what you see is what you get for most of his career. I think Hill has more upside.

No one better at holding Buddy in every single contest than Lonergan. I have no idea how Buddy cannot lose his cool
This photo in the Hun kinda says it all.

Wonder if Bud got a free for:

a) arm chop or
b) over the shoulder or
c) nah... this is Buddy Franklin... play on, nothing to see here...

So does Hale. I had a cool $20 on him to kick the first goal @$26. So my night went from bad to worse!!!

But I agree with Bruest. He is bloody awful in front of goal these days! What happened to the Bruest that could not miss. Bring him back!

These 2 really concern me. We not so much Sewelly who has never been gifted with pace and skill, but there is either something wrong with Silk or he is losing interest??

Silks last month or so has been ave. Any thoughts on Silk?? I think he should be playing more in the midfield for mine.

Surely the loss of Birch has compromised his ideal role?

Eff it.

Why should Buddy be subjected to the same rules as everyone else in the competition? He's too talented to have to play on a level playing field.

When Lonergan tackled him to the ground in the last quarter, that should not be a free kick to Buddy.

When Podsiadly made a ridiculous attempt to mark, kneed Buddy square in the middle of the back and brought him to ground, that shouldn't be a free kick to Buddy.

I don't bother to count the arm chops, the jumper scragging, or any of that. Because unless Buddy does it himself, it's not a free kick.

But Selwood? What a weak, squibbing, cheating puissant excuse for a footballer. Rewarded for not playing football.

In a game where we don't play well, it's a not so subtle reminder we will never get any help from those pricks with whistles in whatever ridiculous colour they happen to be wearing.

We not only have to be better, we have to be 3-4 goals better to keep the umpires influence from having an impact on the final result.

Just goes to show the AFL want to see negative football and downhill skiing. You can run ahead of the ball before a contest if you know that your team can break the rules, tackle the man before he takes possession, make high contact with impunity, and be rewarded when you play for free kicks and complain to the umpires at every opportunity.

Watching Chris Scoot sook like a little biatch every time a free is awarded against them just rubs salt into the wound. I despise that fat sooking thug.

An even playing field is such a distant possibility now, I've had enough.

Effing sick of it.

Hey Lonergan is the bestest backman of all time and Buddy gets all the free kicks.

I like that the very photo they use to justify their article shows Lonergan infringing!

.

The article was written before the game - the photographer took over 200 action shots.

That was the only one where Franklin wasn't clearly being infringed.

Hi guys.
Has there been any footage put up anywhere that shows a number of different angles of the Gunston goal?
That was insane and I want to see how he did it.

Channel 7 pretty much only showed it twice and from the same angle. My guess is that he lay the ball across his foot to create an inswinger but I'd love to see it.

Good luck going forward.

I think it flew out of his anoos

Remember this guys ...

And I am hurting too ...

Geelong played their best, us our worst and we lost by 10 points ...
I get the hurt.... But we were far from our best.... and this is far from done yet....

I'm inclined to agree with you. 1.13 over half a game isn't anywhere near your best.

Safe to say neither team were showing their best the other night. Definitely not done yet.

and then you see chris scott roll his eyes and act all put out when a legitimate free is called against them, whilst all over the ground they are getting away with 100 small things that aren't quite enough to draw the umpire's whistle.

they are good at pushing the boundaries of the rules and learning what they can get away with. this is one of their greatest strengths in terms of wins, but also one of the reasons why they will never have my full respect.

essendon of 95-05 were similar. brisbane, I believe, were dominant because of thier football. power the same. geelong, because they are sneaky and know which rules they can break without drawing a penalty, and how to draw a penalty from a team who is trying not to break the rules.

kind of like the difference between a mugger who robs you of $100 and a cyber criminal who steals 1c out of everyone's bank account...

I'm not here to start a shit fight so don't take it that way but how exactly is this different in principle to the 08 GF? Per your description, it is the exact same thing. Both teams play hard and push the limits and the calls go both ways...but to say its why you will never fully respect us - its your opinion - but like I alluded to.. how is it differnt to the rushed behind 08 GF.... There you used the rules to your advantage to set up the rebound. Based on your analysis, sounds the the same to me...

Either way, another chapter coming in Sept I feel and good luck bw now and then..

Go Catters
