Another awesome ep, besides talking about the "weakest" ep of a series this good would be akin to finding the "weakest" point of Emily Ratajowksi's hotness. This was a little more "by the book" than the rest of the series but the pace and tone was always going to have to change a bit to work in everything for the finale. I have just about destroyed my internet reading everything i can on this show, its just perfect to me and whilst i can't wait for the finale i don't want it to be over.

I enjoyed it.

I don't expect massive twists. We're being revealed in a masterful way what we've suspected all along. Great seeing a show that has built such strong characters, so much depth and texture to everything, that it isn't dependent on twists and turns.

I reckon what will surprise, though, is the scale of people involved.

Have to love how they speed off before 'scarface' finishes talking, he's so innocuous, neither those guys or Cohle gave him a second thought.

I enjoyed it.

It's teased at having a twist (or at least played on the expectations of that), but right now it just looks like the case will have a relatively 'natural' conclusion (albeit on a larger scale than anticipated, as you said). The story is all about the journey, not so much the destination, the detectives just didn't arrive at that destination immediately. Cohle even hinted at it this episode when he said that if Hart didn't cap Ledoux, they might have got it all there and then, but then we wouldn't have had such a watchable story.

Going with the ending that is looking increasingly likely also leaves scope for some sort of twist next season. People expect a twist now and the twist might be that there isn't one, then the next season there'll be no such expectations, so a twist would actually shock more than it would now.

Watching it has been like reading a good book for mine. There is so much in the detail, in the language, and that's why it's so satisfying and moreish. It's almost the antithesis to tv and more like literature. That wide shot over the storage lockers, when Rus first takes Woody there, where the moon (or is it sun) is hanging, burning in the sky, was almost poetic in what it said about the upcoming scene, the story and the characters state of mind.

I'll admit to being worried at the start that we were going through some familiar police clichés what with Cole call calling out Rust on theories. But I'm glad that was sorted out pretty quickly and more importantly made sense for the characters.

I've been expecting some other worldly/fantasy aspects to come into play since I started reading about the Yellow King and Carcosa. Looking at the promo for next week's episode and the Spaghetti Man I'm still half expecting it. I do want a mind-**** but whatever comes from it, it's been a great ride.

I'll have to rewatch it, but I'm sure Cohle was at least a little bit suspicious of him. Although Cohle is pretty much at least a little bit suspicious of everyone. He went back to the school and found all those devil-catchers, so surely he figures into his thoughts. Either way, I don't know how they're going to wrap this up in the last episode ... I'm already getting withdrawals just thinking about it finishing.

Bit of a pointer for mine that Rusty boy will be happy to take out a few perps on his way out. & Hart basically saying goodbye to his ex, looks like he has had enough of life's little joys as well.

There has been talk of the creator being able to write the two mains forever but I think that's a red herring. They'll die and the baddies may even win.

They have always said the show is about the journey not the result, then people complain when we have episodes showing the journey....

RE: The 2 new detectives, they think Rust did it, they know he has a storage locker so they go for a drive through the bayou instead.......

I'm also not sure how they tie the whole thing off in an hour

Yep. Was sure Rust would show Marty something implicating his eldest daughter this week. So her drawings and dolls were just random occurances, or based on stuff she picked up listening to her dad talk about work? Still doesn't explain the swirl on their kitchen wall.

The swirl does first and foremost remind one of a kids drawing IMO, so maybe just extreme coincidence?

Yeah I guess it could still be coming, just thought it would have been revealed in episode 7 if that was the case. They've already got alot to pack into the final episode.

Sooo want to watch that preview, but having not seen any of the previews throughout the series, I just can't bring myself to do it.

I don't think they'll ever give us the definitive answer as to whether the daughter was r*ped or not - that's probably one of the many questions they'll leave unanswered. I personally think she was though. The way she set out the dolls was exactly the same as how Rust set up the beer can stick figures, and it's exactly the same positions as the "animals" were in in the home video. Then there's the swirl drawing, the inappropriate sexual drawing she did at school, her personality which is in stark contrast to her younger sister, the possible symbolism of the crown she wore as a kid. Remember in this latest episode they spoke to that cross-dressing prostitute dude. He went through the same experience but managed to convince himself that it was all a dream and that it wasn't real; maybe the daughter did the same.
