But at the end of the day it was only the mentally impaired minion who faced any sort of justice in what I consider to be an underwhelming conclusion to the season.

That rang pretty true for me though ie. the higher ups, well, not necessarily 'pinning it' on someone else in this case, but getting away with any involvement or facilitation they may have had while someone much lower on the food chain gets their comeuppance.

Had I known from the beginning that the focus of the show was going to be on a character study of Rusty with the murder mystery a poorly developed after thought than I wouldn't have bothered tuning in in the first place.

Hmm I thought it was pretty obvious from about the 2nd episode (maybe even end of the 1st, I'd have to re-watch) that a big part of the show was going to be the enigma wrapped in a beer can that was Rustin Cohle.

In their investigations of a ritualistic murder/s the detectives delved into clues that led them to an occult ring that they came to suspect consisted mainly of people who held positions of power in the community.

That was what hooked into the show, the pseudo philosophy stuff I could take or leave, it's definitely not what interested me about the show.

Although I did roll my eyes a few times when Rusty went on and on about it but I tolerated it because the season story arc had piqued my interest enough to want to watch it through to the last episode.

Rust's philosophical rants were a highlight for me. Thought all aspects of the 1st season were excellent, and I don't think I'm alone in that opinion

I guess based on the amazing tracking sequence at the end of episode 4 I wrongly assumed that the creators were going to give both the story and Rusty's character study equal amount of time and attention. For me there was a gradual decline from episode 4 onwards, I felt teased and misled to be perfectly honest.

I enjoyed Rust's philosophical rants. It was hard to imagine the two cops interviewing him would actually tolerate him going on and on like that but it was so brilliantly acted and everything you just go with it.

yeah i hope season 3 is an improvement (there is a season 3, yeah?). 2 had its moments, but it was a convoluted mess overall. it got to the point where i had IMDB up constantly just to keep track of wtf was going on.

Which is better?

Battle of the Bastards cavalry fight S06 e09 or this?
What about Breaking Bad "Ozymandias" episode.

Are we talking about the one scene?

That whole episode is god tier for me. The Hank scene, Walt telling Jessie he watched Jane die, that tracking shot backwards away from Walt Jr crouched over Skyler defending her as Walt realises its all over, Walt's call to Skyler that he knows the police will be listening in on. Fantastic stuff.

Agree.

I was thinking more individual scene comparison.

If anyone is interested in some of the more weird, dark/spooky stuff and the "occult elite" that goes on in season 1, there's an interesting analysis here:
http://vigilantcitizen.com/moviesandtv/deeper-meaning-true-detective-season-one/

It talks about the "psychosphere" which Rust mentioned (saying he could smell it and tasted like "aluminum and ash") and does point out some connections in scenes I hadn't even realised.

Yeah I'm going to go out on a limb and say S1 of True Detective is probably the greatest season of TV I have ever watched. Ep7-8 could prob be better but 1-5 was legit the most entertained I've ever been.

Just finished a rewatch of season 1. I know people loved ep 4 but for me ep 5 is better and the peak of the show.
The conclusion of the pursuit of Reggie Ledeux with the fake shootout and then the transition to 2002 when everything starts to fall apart for Marty and Rust again, is just brilliant.

Ep 6 was a lot better than I remembered too, especially the scene with Maggie and Rust where she uses him to get back at Marty.

McConaughey was great in that scene, well actually he was brilliant throughout the whole show. Some of the best acting I have ever seen.

It is a great scene no doubt, but so much happens it ep 5 in terms of story, character visuals etc, starting with the shootout sequence with story told over what actually happened. Start to finish it is the most perfect ep of tv I can recall, up there with the season 2 finale of Hannibal.

First half is epic. If it had have continued with it's quality all the way through, then yeah it would be up there with the best season of TV of all time. Ending was such a let down though so it's relegated to very good as opposed to outstanding for me.

Agree with episode 5 as the best, though the final shot of episode 4 is the best (and signature) 'moment' of the season.

In a brilliant season, episodes 3-5 were the peak. It's probably been said a bunch of times, but the standard set in those first 5 episodes probably played a role in the perception of ending being a let down.

It's an absolutely incredible show.

MM's scene talking about religion early on is magnificent.

When woody shot that guy in the head I almost fainted. It was spoiled by the happy ending - went against the dark grain of the rest of the series.

I couldn't watch the first episode all the way through, if I recall. Not because it was bad, just that it was a bit raw.
