Hey all
I was giving this guernsey from someone who has passed away.
The story is along the lines of, he was given this from the player that wore it who he was friends with way back. He has since passed and no one can work out or remember who the player was, and from what era.
Anyone have any ideas?
Ive asked around in a few other places also

Havent we had this story on here before?? #10 was Bob Clayton's number in the late 1960's through to the mid 1970's and passed away about 4 years ago.

We have. But ive posted it in a few places and have contradicting stories. And no closer to finding any evidence or a picture of the damage or anything. Just thought id shake it up again to see what happens

So why dont you provide the following basic facts to help you get an answer
1. What year did the past player pass away? That will narrow it down to which number 10 almost immediately.
2. What decade did he play or what decade do the friends they think he played in. Are we talking pre WWII??
3. How old was the friend that died and was he contemporaries of the dead player or was there a significant gap in their ages??

You have to give us some pretty basic information to get any further. From Ford's numbers thread on the Club 1870 board this will take you back to the early 1960's. As there is no advertising it is pre 1977. That's all I can be volunteered given the information you have supplied. Get more info and you have more of a chance to get an answer.

1. sorry i meant my friend pasted away. so the story stopped with him.
2. 3. he died at 67 and that was about 3 years ago... Its only a guess that he would have been the same age or a bit younger than the player. As i believe it was a friend of his. The wife doesnt remember anything.

thanks

Ok here is my stab in the dark. Dennis Errey played A grade between 1962-1973 so that would mean he was born somewhere between 1940 and 1945 which would make him a similar age as your friend.

Bob Clayton from the story on the club site after he passed away
http://www.portadelaidefc.com.au/news/2011-09-08/vale-bob-clayton
Bob first played for the Magpies as a 16 year-old in 1961 ...... A defender, Bob played 151 League games for the Magpies between 1966-75 and competed in five League and 2 Reserve Grand Finals, but retired without a Premiership.

So Bob was born in 1945 meaning he would be 70 the same age as your friend. I would write to club web editor and historian Matt Agius, and tell him your story and ask for contact details for Dennis Errey and Bob Clayton's widow. If he isnt prepared to do that then ask him in the same email if he will contact them on your behalf. Make sure you give him your friend's name. And as a bit of a sweetener offer Matt that if we ever get a museum you would be prepared to lend the club the jumper for 6 or 12 months to display. Email Matt at

Adz2332 if its not 1 of those 2 ask Matt if he has records of who wore number 10 post WWII as it could be from a player from the 1950's.

Ian Hannaford (according to 1963 Budget, as Vice Captain wore # 10).

And before him I have a feeling it was Ted Whelan but unconfirmed as yet... Rexie J ?

Edit: Wrong, it was Lloyd Zucker ( # 10)
This video of the 1958 Grand Final shows Zucker 10, Hannaford 9, Whelan 8.
