You do realise that Reilly has spent a decade playing a number of roles, mostly in the midfield? He's far from the one trick pony his detractors would make him out to be.

Hendo on the other hand has been found wanting in all but the easiest position on the ground...
You do realise Reilly was drafted as a midfielder?
You do realise that he played in our midfield but stank so they made him a tagger where he also stank?
You do realise that he wouldn't get a game in our midfield?

But the irony in your post is that Reillys best football was on the easiest position on the ground until he had an opponent?

Given Reilly has also failed in all but the easiest spot on the ground, not sure that's an argument his supporters want to make

Funny that the selectors were happy to play him for close to 200 games, with 2013 being the first time he was dropped in living memory. Just because it is popular BF folklore that the whipping boy is a failure doesn't make it true.

Hendo on the other hand has been tried, failed and sent back to the SANFL on numerous occasions.

6 games does not a career make. Just ask Chris Knights.

What does Reilly add to the half back that Henderson doesn't? I've mentioned what I believe Henderson can add to the side which Reilly doesn't above. The only thing I believe Reilly is better then Henderson at when they're both at their best is taking an intercept mark. I just don't see the benefit of playing Reilly over Henderson.

Also, extremely stupid comment about Knights as he played far more then 6 strong AFL games. But hey, if you want to look at it like that, with those 6 massive games Knights played in 09, he managed to turn that into a decent contract at the Crows and is still on an AFL list 5 years later so you could say 6 games does actually make a career.

Reilly was a regular figure at Sturt in his earlier days on the list. In fact Hendo has played more games in his 4 years on the senior list than Reilly had at the same stage.

Another fun fact is that Hendo has more career Brownlow votes than Reilly. Now obviously that's not the be all and end all, but for a bloke to be a regular in an AFL midfield for 7 years and pick up 4 brownlow votes and have two 30-possession games says a fair bit IMO. He was a mediocre midfielder. The fact he got a game every week doesn't change that.

The thing I like about Hendo in the back half is that he is a good enough athlete to run off a defensive forward. I'm sure nobody will dispute that for all Reilly is and is not, he's no athlete. The result of that is that if a player decides they want to keep him quiet, it's not that hard to do.

Hendo didn't get a heap of defensive attention in his purple patch this year, but he did get a bit and when he did, he was generally able to run away from it.

It will be interesting to see how that little battle plays out next year. Personally, I think there's room for both of them back there but it reckon Reilly will be nervous because Hendo's skill set is a little more unique in our squad. If Reilly doesn't perform, I reckon Otten, Hartigan and even Johnston are similar enough players that they could replace him.

1) If he was a success why was he moved in role so often, including to less important roles? It's unusual to see the argument that high performance has led to demotion.

2) Best and fairest results consistently demonstrate the argument that Reilly has not performed at a high standard over his career.

3) 'Living memory' is a spectacularly inappropriate term for a player who has been dropped multiple times throughout his career for form.

4) You appear to be advancing the argument that 'he's played more games and therefore is a better performer now'. You see how ludicrous that is, right?

How many grand finals have we made with these genius selectors? Reilly should have been traded 7-8 years ago.

For what it's worth, I expect both Henderson & Reilly to play in R1.
But do you have Henderson in the backline?

I just can't see how we fit them both in when Talia and Rutten are our KP defenders, Brown and Laird as our smalls, Otten as a 3rd tall with one of Reilly or Hendo. Who misses out if you actually have both in the backline? I'm guessing Otten although he finished rather well in the b&f which suggests the coaches really liked what they got from him this year.

I agree, but unless Reilly shows a sharp improvement compared to his 2013 performances, I don't expect him to be there by the halfway point of the year.

He will be nervous. Hopefully it brings the best out of him. I don't rate him, but I don't actually want him to fail.

There's nowhere else that Hendo can play, so yes, he is in defence. Reilly has many more strings to his bow and may not be in defence. Depends on where the coaches find the greatest need.

I agree, but the premise is that he continues to show career worst form, which I regard as unlikely; his poor form being due to Sando's butchery of the pre season training.

Are you on drugs?

What strings does Reilly have? Out of Hendo and Reilly who is capable of playing in more positions?

even if Hendo doesnt play as the spare man I think you will find that he will get off his chain quite a fair bit

for those who do know Henso's game day GPS numbers are up there with the best of our midfielders so his work rate and tank is as good as an onballer so I would be confident that just through shear work rate he would be able to work over most HF's and hurt his opponent going the other way

At least when playing loose, Hendo has his speed and aerobic capacity to rely on so he's a chance of breaking a tag from the opposition just by being faster and fitter. Reilly, however, is much more taggable as he's slow and was pretty unfit this year and he'll be 30 during the 2014 season so none of those factors are going to improve much.

That's EXACTLY what it means

Neither can check an opponent in the defensive half
Will choose to disagree on this.

Both will be in our best-22 IMO & they both can play tight if need be. Just because you leave your man to intercept a ball doesn't mean you are loose.

I'd say 2012 was the outlier, not 2013. But there's no point arguing about it, all that matters now is what he does in 2014.
