have you guys seen the sport section of todays paper page 11 ?

in regards to your banner's ?

just wondering what you felt about it
i know on the hawk banners we can give idea's to what goes on it and it has to be passed by the club to be on safe side but this doesn't seem to be happening with yours.

i wrote a rough version of it as there was no link to it on the web

Squad fears a Banner ban

todays sun sport page 11
A rift has broken out between Carlton cheer squad and carlton footy club over the words on their banners their president said she will quit at the end of the year after leading the cs over the last 3 years .

The story goes that she is disgusted by recent messages on their banner's , last week's said "Carlton acknowledges Richmond's centenary, 100 years of yellow and bleak " is a series of provocative statements on Carlton's banners this season.

the article said that the Cheer squad had no say in what was on the banner's .

it said the blues officials had penned last weeks message.

Ms Duan [cs pres] said she thought that banner for the Richmond game was a bit derogatory .

Greg Miller of Richmond said it was a bit disappointing . You'd think on a big day for us they'd show some respect .

Ms Duan said that the blues refused to listen to her and have commissioned further provocative banners for coming games .
Against the saints -"NO mention of the F-word" , while against the dogs rd 17 the banner will read " Dogs Obedience Class".

Ms Duan said the Messages were not in the spirit of what the cheer squads were about.

"They [Carlton] think it is funny , ibut it reflects on the whole cheer squad because nobody knows it doesn't come from us ," she said.

it goes on to say Let it be on their heads if she gets told by the AFL to put a banner down .

Carlton reckon they have heard no complaints and that the banners weren't meant to offend and they were just having a little bit of fun .

2 of my daughters are in the Carlton Cheer Squad & what they leader of the cheersquad stated in that article is correct.....

they are advised by an official at the club what to put on their banner, the cheersquad have no say over it.

That is why at the Port Adelaide game in Adelaide a few weeks ago now, it read for about the 3rd time "teal..... isn't that a duck?"

I know for a fact the leader of the Carlton Cheersquad is not happy with what is put on the banners but I think her hands are tied.....

as I have said to my older daughter..... well it is simple.....just don't make any more then the club will get peed off.... lol

edit *** having said all that, I personally see nothing wrong with a little bit of banter between cheersquads

Anybody who complains about our banners and their content are A grade pussies.

Including the President of the Cheer Squad.

We don't want someone as soft as u in charge of devising our Banners.

I can't believe people have become so sensitive about the banners. By the late '70s & into the '80s, the raising of the banner prior to the players coming onto the field used to attract a lot of interest. Spectators would actually be eagerly anticipating the latest witty message on the banner, in contrast to the situation these days when most spectators don't even acknowledge the banner.

Initially it was just a bit of innocent banter between cheer squads. A minority of rebellious cheer squads took it too far, leading to the clubs becoming involved in 'vetting' the messages that would go on the banners, thus leading to the sanitised messages that we mostly see, nowadays.

Good on our club for lightening up a little bit & taking us back to the days when the game wasn't so sanitised. I can't believe Greg Miller could be so sensitive about such an inoffensive message. This coming from a man who has never hesitated to kick heads to progress his football admin career. If this continues to follow the path it is currently on, it won't be long before the banner goes the way of the Tasmanian Tiger (not you Thylacine 60).

you can do funny ditties but i can see her point to but it is sad that say you guys or cs members can not even put in a choice of what might go on the banners

the Richmond cs don't put anything with the opps name on it as one member of their cs said on sen it is a was of space , we have and at times when we do we lose eg roo game this year as a good example that may be just a coincidence or what i don't know but but seems to happen sometimes .

one of my idea's will be on a hawk banner in the finals i can't wait to see it up there , i feel sorry for the blue members who don't get that chance to
cause club officials always say what goes on it :(

i love that our banners say something worth reading, if it said;

"100 Years for Richmond - We respect you *kiss*"

I would throw up!

if it said something meaningless such as

"100 years for Richmond - Thanks for the rivalry"

I would just stop looking at them.

Keep up the good work CFC

If you want respect you have to earn it. Richmond have done nothing in 100 years to earn anyones respect.

We copped messaged for 5-6 years straight of putting down the club, now we are fighting back, it should be our right to get stuck into other clubs.

fair enough reckon the first bit of your post would be a good banner

i can all points and i agree you guys copped alot of that sort of stuff over the years that you got to say enough is enough we are fighting back

they could still let members put in suggestions that can be looked at i reckon as you guys could come up with some good suggestions whether to do with the other team or not .

if some one does that then email them to the club never know you may have a better idea then they do

You don't think it can give opponents a bit of a rev up? What would Wallet have said to his players pre-game if it had been Ratts who'd said what the banned said? I recall a time when if a banner was split by the wind the opposition cs would come across and help mend it. Rivalry is one thing but surely at cs level we can keep it respectful. I for one don't feel any sense of triumph when our message is a derogatory one. At least the cringeworthy typos are fewer nowadays. :)

I'm sure they have a say, but in the end of the day the club will win
by the article they don't they get told to put such and such on i am in hawk cs and i know we can put forwards a suggestion that if deemed ok by all who check it the club has to say yes we can not be sued or cause an up roar with that it will be fine go ahead . doesn't mean all that get put forwards will go on a banner but at least they can get member input unlike by the sound of it your cs by the sound of it

i remember doing just that in i think 2004 i had the tape and another with me helped then had to rush back cause straight after your guys went through our guys came out while your song was still going caught me a bit off guard it did :)
can help at the G as we are side by side at the Dome another story you are at the other end of ground

when i first saw a opp's banner rip was told not to laugh as it was bad luck have never laughed when this has happened ever .

The real question is "Are the sponsors happy?"

I mean, that's what banners are all about these days right?;)
they get their bits all over banners and usually on the back is ad's well that was ours last 3 years when i used to help but knee's are giving in a bit ,
we get rolls of sponsor logo's to put on the banner so they will be happy no matter what

I don't think there was anything derogatory in our banner against richmond . In fact , I quiet enjoyed it and thought it was amusing . Nothing more than mere rivalry and who really cares about mrs miller anyway .
I do agree that perhaps the club could work with the cheer squad and look at suggestions put forward to find the best possible message , be it a boring new age type or preferably the more traditional type which helps to extend our great rivalries .
As Sticks said !

The banners this year have been awesome
Here in Perth we hate that we are not allowed to do them but have them sent to us via Vic. But this years - we could rub it in but we are better than that : started off a great night capturing what we were all about!
Keep up the fun I say. The Tigers one and the Melbourne one was priceless. Lets do things our way. Bugger the rest

i always thought the club made the banners and never gave any thought to the cheer squad!

cheersquads spend hours doing them the lastest i ever stayed to make one was from about 5-6 pm to 4.30am some had left at 12am which at times was the latest that one was made to but not this time ,
now they don't usually that that long to make one we were doing an extra backing and the one for game day plus we had sleeves for the poles we had to clean before sticking the banner on to them i had to be up at 8 am the next morning to go out with the person picking up the banner to get it to the ground at 4'30 am we did not pole it as we were too tired so we did it at the ground when we got there .

a lot of work gets done by the cs's more then some realize .

BTW Why would the banners actually rev the other team's players up ? I seriously doubt the opponents players would actually read or care the other team's banners anyway ?

They go up well before the players appear. How hard would it be for a club official on the ground or in the race to pass on the banner message?

You mean to say you don't believe any of today's players can be revved up with some old fashioned RAH RAH?

Picture this - Richmond are in the race waiting to come out - they see or are told about the 'yellow and bleak crack' - the Captn says to the team "Do your see the sh1t this arrogant mob say about us" - they all yell "Let's cream these pr1cs" but it really only incenses 2 tigers - as Stevo starts to stream away with the first clearance one of these 2 lays a flying tackle that inspires the rest of them and sets their tone for the day

There ends the fairytale but it can happen
