Hodge doesn't rate until he can break a Tag

After the poor showing by Hodge on Friday night I went digging as they say and what did I find just this little fact.

Hodge hasn't hit 20 disposals this season when he got the best tagger

Now I am aware that Hodge is leading the coaches award this season.

However we cannot truly judge him as a player until he delivers the kind of results Ablett, Buckley, Judd, Hird and Voss do/did under a hard tag. Hodge even went as far to say on radio yesterday that he wishes he had a excuse to blame the effort Welsh did on him on Friday night on but he had nothing. The same player Welsh who the week before went to Ablett early on and saw Ablett gather 18 possie's on him.

I appreciate that Hodge is highly rated, and rightly so. However his accomplishments are always going to be viewed with regard to the minimal amount of ball he receives when he is manned up.

Talk of Hodge rating amongst the best will fade quickly if he can't test himself consistently against the better negating players.

Almost a perfect thread - Should say he doesn't rate at all.

You're obviously easily pleased.

Coaches opinion > Sour, bitter Geelong flogs who still can't deal with the pain of being legitimately outplayed in 2008.

It's sad really.

The coaches rightly say that he has had a fantastic season. They will rate the players based on their performances - they don't care if they got a tag or not. The simple fact of the matter is, only three coaches this year have put the number 1 tag on Hodge, and one of them (Mark Thompson) didn't even bother to leave his tagger on Hodge for the whole game. Most of them are more concerned with Mitchell. When they do bother to tag Hodge, you find that he's ineffective.

Should be renamed
I won't rate Hodge until he can break a tag whilst injured

Pretty sure he got 4 points on Friday night just like the rest of the hawks

Like the trooper he is, he played on and had some good punches out of the packs. Unlike your handbaggers that'd signal for the stretcher and call it a day.

Adelaide, got the best taggers in Doughty and Reilly.

Port, got the best tagger for him in Matt Thomas and Logan.

West Coast, got Adam Selwood, best tagger for the Eagles.

Melbourne, got J McDonald.

Got 20 or more possessions on all these occassions, contrary to the OP's claim.

Shall I keep going?

A predictable response from a Squark flog when a legitimate question over a Squark player's abilities are raised....2008....2008....groan* Intellectually bereft pal......

Now to Hodge...one of my favourite players in the league...I admire his foot and hand skills and his engine. While I dont know the guy, I suspect he is also a decent bloke, with a good knowledge of the game. He wouldn't however be the only player who finds life difficult under a hard tag...some of these taggers are pretty decent footballers in their own right. but players like Hodge can still do damage even if their restricted.

Talking about the abilities of Ablett, Hird etc to break tags when talking about Hodge demonstrates where this guy sits in the scheme of things. Perhaps he doesnt shake a hard tag as well as the legends, but this doesnt diminish him as a player IMO....he is one of the class acts in the AFL.

It's a nice copy thread, but unfortunately it's statistically inaccurate. Unlike my similar thread on Ablett which has exposed him as a player who enjoys running around on his own most of the time.
