How can NZ finish first?

200,289 runs or 57.421 wickets.

IF NZ bat first and score 350, NZ will take the #1 spot if Australia are bowled out for 232 or less.

IF NZ bat first and score 300, NZ will take the #1 spot if Australia are bowled out for 184 or less.

IF NZ bat first and score 250, NZ will take the #1 spot if Australia are bowled out for 136 or less.

IF AUS bat first, no matter what score they make (150-350), NZ will take the #1 spot if they chase it down in 26-27 overs or less.

So I'd say NZ's best chance is to bat first and make 350, or bowl first and restrict Australia to under 200.

NZ's best chance would be to score 350 and then hope we collapse. I doubt we will score under 200 batting first... Fleming likes chasing so he will probably send us in. It doesn't really matter, NZ would be a good chance of beating the Resting Lankans.

With the 9:30 start their best chance may be to roll us quickly on a dodgy pitch, then get it within 20 overs.

Similar the the SA demolition of England.

Def agree. Best chance to send us in. Even if we get 250, they might aswell go for it.

I would rather play Sri Lanka, than the Saffies. They wont try and go out specifically for top spot, but if it comes it comes. I can see us winning eveyr game prior to the Semi's, having an off day, and then ending up going home after losing one game. :thumbsd: Finallists should come straight from the Super 8's, hell its already long enough!! That way teams like Sri Lanka would put their best team out at all chances. :p

They would have to close nearly a full point of Net RR in beating Oz tomorrow.

But the answer is yes, and it wouldnt take a complete mugging either.

- batting first, score 320 and then bowl Oz out for 200 which they drag out for best part of 50 overs.

Then NZ would have NetRR of 1.29 ish and Oz 1.26 ish (on my numbers).

Something similar for OZ if they bat first, and then knock them off very sharpish (20 odd overs) also works.

Unlikely yes, impossible no.

Hope that helps.

In the unlikely event that NZ are in a position to finish top I am positive Fleming would slow things down to ensure this doesn't happen. Very much like Steve Waugh in the '99 WC.

They want to play SL in the semi, and the feeling from SL is very much reciprocated.

Ponting must be due to win a toss soon, he hasn't won one for a while now. I think the Aussies will want to bat first. Honestly, even if NZ win this game I can't see them bowling out the Aussies for under 200. That is complete fantasy IMO.

Morning pitch conditions have been bowler friendly this WC... never discount Shane Bond either. He has a remarkable record against us and is in pretty good form.

Can't see it happening myself, but stranger things have happened this WC.

I'm a NZ supporter and while I could see us winning I can't see it being by that sort of margin.

This Australian side is different to the one you played in the Chappell-Hadlee series. I agree NZ have some good bowlers but so do we. Interesting game ahead, I can't wait.
