How do you rate our draft haul?

the chances of being a decent player is an exponential curve, so yeah after the first couple of rounds it starts to flatten out, but even then if you skip over a bunch of players to 'reach' for a specific type, your still going from 10% to 7% or 5% or whatever. That kind of thing will have a significant effect over time. Chances are those players are not going to make it anyway... but by reaching youre just compounding that. And since they probably arent going to make it, you definately do not get a pat on the back for addressing needs by doing it. Ruckamn may be outliers here, because they develop late.

addressing needs is time-based. Sanders not needed? libba is 32 next year. treloar 31. dunkley left. smith is some chance to follow. its an issue we cant afford to ignore.

Anyway, the other plank to 'always best available' is trade for needs right? but guess what you trade with.. draft picks. And big salary offers. You cant hide from the risk, you can only move it around
I agree, but for me the solution is “both”. You pick best available even through to the 3rd-4th round but then you delist Lachie McNeil and take one more reach for a specific type.

I wouldn’t let our need for a small lock down defender (we only have Doc really) get in front of anyone we actually rated, but I’d much rather take a punt on a specialist back pocket than keep McNeil.

Do people think McNeil is currently the weakest player on the list?
On output alone, he has shown more, or at least more consistency, at AFL level than Bedendo, Clarke, Busslinger, Gallagher, Garcia, Khamis, Cleary and Jones, and arguably Darcy. This is without considering our five draftees. I think it gets forgotten that McNeil has played 42 games in three seasons, which is far more than any of the above have been considered for.

The problem is that most of these guys have shown - or we expect to have - considerably more upside. Time will tell if they can deliver on it.

Not necessarily for a game tomorrow but in terms of likelihood of winning a premiership then yes. Who would you even say is competition? The fact that Baker and Poulter have 2 year deals and Bedendo was kept on the main list while McNeil was downgraded says the club feels the same.

I get what you’re getting at but cmon man that is awfully irrelevant, he’s also played more games than like what, 50% of the last 2 years top 10 draft picks.

Hannan has better output than Buss & Darcy and he got delisted, I’m just not sure what this point even achieves 😂

He’s clearly in the absolute bottom rung of players left in the squad considering he was, you know delisted? It’s not a dig at him it’s just a fact I’m not sure we have to throw up a completely randomised group of players he ‘outperformed’ to defend calling him poor

I think you misunderstand me - I think he's bottom rung too. If I'm picking a side to play tomorrow, though, there are quite a lot of players I'd have him ahead of. My point is just that "weakest" is too broad a term to have an actual answer. It depends what you're going for.

To be fair it’s 42 games and I don’t think I’ve walked away from one game thinking he’s played really well. He clearly must provide some sort of defensive running that the coaches value.

I remember Clay Smith and Liam Picken having a pretty big impact as forwards in the 2016 finals series
Hoping Harmes can play a similar role.

Playing as a specialist mall forward is such a niche role
Yeah, it's an especially hard role when the sales are on

VDM and Poulter in my opinion are behind him. I personally believe Roarke is a far better option than all 3 of these. He's a better player than Baker, Bedendo and a few others. People forget the game he played in the 21 GF. Other than Treloar was close to our best player

Unfortunately I think Roarke’s body is done, plantar fascia injuries are really hard to manage. I rate how he shows up in big games.

Bont perhaps? Balls deep in Norm Smith until 20 mins in the third.

Pretty interesting.

Would love to know our discussions!

The best video I've seen of this type was the Carlton box in the 2 or 3 selections before Moir. They really wanted him and were sweating him not being called.

I'd be fascinated to see our box around picks 36-39 and the reactions when Lual got called.

Ha, Bont was clearly our best. Treloar second.

I don't really care who may have been good after those two. I don't want to put myself through having to think about that game.

Yeah just watched that one.

Loving the access clubs are giving us now.
