Mmm, we'll see. Most people felt 2017 (pre-finals) was a revival of sorts.
False dawn if they did. Who were these people kidding? Must have been people just glancing at game from lounge room from time to time and only see mostly highlights and think that is what we see for 120 minutes of regular games.

Another game into a new round and another ugly spectacle. It's the norm now. We got 32 more quarters of footy to go for whole round. Lets hope in all that we can find at least 4 or 5 quarters of footy that are a good spectacle.

Watched the Geelong/GWS game and when the commentators mentioned about the sizes of the ground it got me thinking ...20 odd metres less width than the MCG... if my rusty maths is right... thats about 3,000 less square metres of playing surface (150*20). Surely that can't be helping with congested games either. If we're going to talk about reducing the number of players on the ground then surely we should also have a minimum size of playing surface. Would be relatively easy to do too... just no-longer schedule games at venues like Kardina Park or the SCG!

Make it unlimited interchange change again...there was no reason to limit it in the first place. Players will be less fatigued so there skills will be better, more high marks and less injuries as well from there bodies being fresher.

Well I hope we're not going to start monitoring the game's health on a match-by-match basis, let along quarter by quarter, like a depressive constantly checking his/her mental state.

Yeah the first half was crap to watch, the second just a regular one-sided half of footy that we'll have forgotten by next week. Maybe all we're missing is contests - after last year produced the highest-ever number of games decided by four points or less.

Where scores at lowest level for several decades and 9 games a week versus 6 games a round previously, then more games decided by smaller margins is a given.

Umpires and congested football are ruining the game.

I think the latter is causing the former to have more influence in the game.
Umpires pay too many free kicks and control the game. Sometimes I think I'm watching a game of umpiring.

They are guessing and making bad calls and the softness of the frees is unbelievable. We used to have a tough game now you can't touch somebody and they get a free.

Ffs Hurn didnt touch someone and they got a free.

And ****ing roos, Lyon and Sydney can go ead with their shit brand.

Malthouse was defensive at the Eagles but he wasn't closing the game up.

My two cents worth.

Congestion only got worse around the footy as soon as the interchange went through the roof. As for flooding it was a game plan used for two year until the cats broke through with kamikaze type football which was amazing to watch. The interchange is root of all evils in the AFL today

I must admit with BT though the umpires need to just get to a ball up, and throw it up straight away

all that will do is allow more players to get to every contest to pressure the ball carrier, cause turnovers, and generally congest play. No thanks

Heresy to some, but 16 a side will do a great job in getting rid of the mauls. It will raise the on field skills because it in effect takes out 36 players [2 teams] from the competition. ie 15th & 16th will then become the least skilled players in each team! It's the easiest change to make to modern footy to have the most dramatic effect on mauls, skills, congestion and injuries!

Yep, dont mind it along with 6-6-6 at centre bounces, some minor umpire rule interpretations inforced and interchange capped at 40 would go along way to fixing the ugly style the game is played these days.
From memory in the ye olde days it was 16 a side?

No. 18
It was 16 in the VFA to be a point of difference to the VFL.
It was 20 sometimes in 1800's when game still in it's infancy working out what it wanted to be.
