Just wondering what everyone thinks about Hurley, where do you think he should play?
I think as a forward he is overrated, yes he has a awesome kick, but he drops alot of marks, has a awesome presence Forward, but for me he is a awesome defender, just attacks the ball and man as if his life depends on it. I person

Must be given every chance FWD IMO, quality KPFs are much harder to find than quality KPBs.

I haven't seen him as much as you Essendon people obviously but like Fletcher, Lake and even Silvagni before them i think he could be a good forward. (better than what most teams have) As a defender though he could be top 2 or 3 in the league.
Will be interesting to see which way he goes or if he continues to do both.

It's also quite rare for a backman to become a fwd (after he's been a back for a while) but Fwds become backs all the time, lots of backs today are failed fwds, Alistair lynch is the only back i can think of who went fwd successfully over any lengh of time, so there's no harm at all in keep the boy fwd until you find a better option.

Re: Hurley - Forward or Back

Defenders save games, forwards win games. I would play him forward, however until Pears is back and fit there may be times when he has to play back. When Pears is fit again a backline containing Hooker, Pears, Fletcher & Hurley would be too tall.

Fraser Gehrig is another. Was a backman at WCE if I recall correctly.

Back.

Reminds me of Trent Croad, who played a lot of eye catching games as a forward and was left there even when he didn't perform for long periods. As a backman he was a lot more consistent and valuable to the team.

Yes, the return of Pears will mean he will play forward a bit, but the retirement of Fletcher also opens a door for him to go into the backline.

So far he's played more consistent quality football in the backline which is to be expected. In the backline he has the support of Fletcher and Hooker so they can find good matchups between the 3 of them. In the forward line he's been our only genuine KP forward, with our other tall forwards being Ryder/Hille/Bellchambers. Our ruckmen aren't bad forwards as part timers but none of them are really 'full time forwards' although they are trying with Ryder.Because of our strange forward dynamic, Hurley has been getting the best key defender and often multiple opponents, its been pretty tough for him.

I think we need him in the backline whilst Pears is out and as long as we are persisting with 3 ruckman. After that.....who knows???
