Hypothetical: Pick 1 for Buddy

A hypothetical question for all Hawk fans: If the AFL make GWS use their number 1 pick in order to acquire Sir Bud. Do we take the best young kid or look to move it on for some ready made players?

Would we look at a Kruezer & Gibbs package or Griffin & the dogs second rounder? Or are we better to take Boyd or Aish and set the team up longer term?

Your thoughts?

I must add though, my love of Franko is very deep and am still hopeful the big man signs on and builds his legacy at the family club!!!

I think it would depend on what was on offer.

I wouldn't swap the number one pick for the guys you mentioned.

Maybe our two first round picks (potentialy 1 and 18) for Griffen, the Dogs first (potentially 4) and second (potentially 22) would make sense, if Griffen refused to re-sign.

How can the AFL make GWS use their number 1 pick ????

The only way this scenario can playout is if the hawks match Buddys free agency contract offer from GWS and then on trade him. The problem is they may get stuck with Franklin on the GWS contract. Risky play I would suggest.

I'd take it hoping that we can also pick up a free agent (maybe two).

Knowing us we would pick someone other than Boyd with that pick.

Is he that good?

I saw some clips on foxtel & he seemed to be a man playing boys, not necessarily an all-star dominating his peers.

Is he quick & skilful as well?

Look I think the AFL have begun to look a little bad on this subject(Buddy) and I guess we all heard Andy.D (gee I really dislike the man) the other week saying the Giant might need to trade for him etc etc.
I think it might end up in the back rooms with AFL saying to both us and the giants, hawks will match the offer and giants have to trade for big bud, we get no.1 pick, young on baller and maybe even change of some other picks. Everyone wins in the eyes of the media and no one will talk bad of the AFL.
Anyway no do not swap the pick if it were to come our way. Our now and future look very bright

Okay - let's extend this hypothetical - what if GC come to us and say they want pick one and they'll give us one of their better youngns + their first pick for it?
Would like it to be O'Meara. Obviously they wouldn't do it though.

Which player?

This is draft tampering and the afl wont get involved.

The hawks will not be allowed to match the giants offer of 1.2 million unless they have sufficeint space in the salary cap which i think would be highly unlikley. About as likely as Sydney having enough space in their cap for a $900k player !!!

I've always wondered if this could happen. I mean there is huge speculation that Whitfield will come to Hawthorn so it makes sense if he was part of the buddy trade. Whitfield and pick 1 is fair compensation for Buddy IMO.

free agency period is before the trade and delisting period, so we can match any offer we want seeing as we could just trade out and delist whoever we needed to.

So I have this theory.
We trade Buddy for pick 1 in the 2013 draft.
We pick up a midfielder.
Buddy goes to GWS because of the trade.
Around December the AFL is found to have been corrupt by some organisation and GWS have been salary cap rorting.
Buddy enters the rookie draft and we pick him up or something.
We get Buddy and the best 18 year old midfielder.
Guaranteed. 100%. A+. THIS WILL HAPPEN PEOPLE, JUST BE FAITHFUL

If Buddy wants to go to GWS and Hawthorn would like pick #1 and "anything", what list manager in their right mind would make a trade knowing they can pick him with either the first pick in the national draft (dumb move) or the first pick in the preseason draft?

There would have to be some 'outside influence' to make Stephen Silvani make a mistake like that, with all due respect to Hawthorn.

The only way the hawks can get pick 1 in a trade for Buddy is if he gets a dose of the guilts and wants his old team to be compensated. Very doubtful and most players care more for the new club than the old one.

HYPOTHETICALLY if Franklin has decided he wants to head to GWS and they offer us the #1 pick (I can't see that happening, but anyway) perhaps hypothetically we could trade it to the doggies for Ryan Griffen?

Again IF Franklin does leave I think the sensible choice would be to trade whatever compensation we get for the best midfielder available.

Why would GWS trade for Franklin when they can get him for nothing as a free agent or at worst use pick 1 in the pre season draft ?????

All this talk about trading buddy is fanciful.

He is leaving and all you will get will be pick 20 odd. Its unfair but thems the rules.

"It might be free agency if he does decide to become that free agent or it might be a trade situation," Silvagni said of the Giants' means of securing Franklin.

It's actually in the best interests of the non expansion clubs if the AFL is forced into a corner where they must make gws give up something significant for Franklin. They have manipulated the whole thing, and are giving them another leg up on top of everything else they have already received. This is not pure free agency, where we all operate under the same rules. Clearly, we don't.

If the medium to bigger clubs just take this lying down, then they are continuing to surrender all power to a corrupt regime, which needs to be pulled up in it's tracks and held accountable for what it is doing to the game.

It pains me to agree with a Cats supporter, but sadly he is 100% correct!
WHY would GWS trade pick #1 to Hawthorn for Buddy when there is no reason to?!

Pickup Buddy for nothing & keep pick #1 to trade for other star players, OR trade #1 to Hawthorn for Buddy.

If that trade was possible i'd say sign the deal NOW, but it's just not going to happen :(
