Hypothetical: Pick 1 for Buddy

It's actually in the best interests of the non expansion clubs if the AFL is forced into a corner where they must make gws give up something significant for Franklin. They have manipulated the whole thing, and are giving them another leg up on top of everything else they have already received. This is not pure free agency, where we all operate under the same rules. Clearly, we don't.

Why would the afl be forced into a corner. Listen people. Please !!!!

1. GWS offer Franklin 1.2 million + for 5 years.
2. Hawthorn match the offer (they cant as they wont have enough space in salary cap) and keep Buddy. If this was the case they would just offer him 1.2 mill from the start.
3. Hawthorn match the offer with a view to trading him. Once they have matched the offer the Giants wont trade with them they will just wait for the psd and get him for nothing.
4. Hawthorn dont match the offer the Buddy goes to the Giants as a free agent.

Please ask yourself. If the hawks matched the Giants offer would Buddy really want to go to the Giants. Surely he would rather stay at the hawks for the same dollars.

There are only 2 situations available.

Buddy resigns with hawks for unders.
Buddy signs for Giants as a free agent and hawks get pick 20odd.

All the other talk is just rubbish. SOS was never the smartest bloke anyway. He probably doesnt even know the rules properly.

If the medium to bigger clubs just take this lying down, then they are continuing to surrender all power to a corrupt regime, which needs to be pulled up in it's tracks and held accountable for what it is doing to the game.

I hate the idea of only getting compensated with pick #20 for Buddy leaving for GWS, but unfortunately ALL of the clubs knew what was coming with FA... It makes me sick thinking Geelong got a high pick for GAblett, and Saints got a high pick for Goddard; but theres not much we can do about it and i doubt the AFL will be stepping in because they think the top-ranked team in the AFL is getting shafted.

I hate Geelong ;) and i hate even more that you're 100% correct!

Absolutely, Robby. Prior to his King Kong gaff, Eddie was putting this on the agenda. 26/27 year old players are the heart and soul of clubs and it will reach a tipping point where the lower half clubs can potentially be gutted by these unfair FA rules. The grubby hands of Vlad are all over this and it adds another unique element whereby we deserve greater than pick 20.

I'd take pick one and someone like Whitfield but the reality is, we're still getting unders and betting on their potential to develop.

....yet last year's premiers picking up a highly-regarded forward for free thanks to their CoLA was fine?

Well, according to the AFL it was. Heck for all we know it was Vlad who brokered the Tippett deal, would hardly surprise me.

I agree its bullsh!t, but we've all known and seen for 20+ years that if you're a team from the North the AFL is going to do whatever they can to look after you, whether that hurts the Victorian teams or not!

The Victorian teams also get a good run, you just dont hear about it as much.

Hawks stole Darren Jarman from the Brisbane Bears.
Hawks got Jack Gunston from the crows after 2 years.
Pies got Anthony Rocca from Sydney
Roos got Shannon Grant from Sydney
Pies got Buckley from Bears
Hawks got priority picks 2 years in a row and landed Buddy and Roughy in the one year.

Every team feels bent over at times, but what goes around comes around.

Cats lost Ablett and won the flag the year after. There is a fair chance you lot will do the same.

because Buddy wouldn't piss on a 1.2mil a year deal from gws. you think he's going leave the reigning premiers for an extra 100k a year after tax?

it's gonna take $2mil a year over 6 at least which means gws paying a 31-32 year old $2mil a season smack bang in the middle of their window wwith a much smaller cap than they have now.

now if they do a trade, they can have the AFL pay half the money outside the cap and not have it look like the blatant cheating it is.No trade means no AFL money.

Dude, this thread is about a hypothetical. There's another thread on this board you can contribute to that's more in line with your argument.

In the words of dunstall, 3 first round picks would be fair.

If, and it's a big if, GWS give us pick 1 and Buddy wants to leave, who do we go for?

Aish or Boyd?

Aish is really a potential Brownlow Medallist, I'd lean towards him to be honest, but looking at Phantom Drafts he'll be dropping to around pick 5?

It pains me to agree with a Cats supporter, but sadly he is 100% correct!
WHY would GWS trade pick #1 to Hawthorn for Buddy when there is no reason to?!

Pickup Buddy for nothing & keep pick #1 to trade for other star players, OR trade #1 to Hawthorn for Buddy.

If that trade was possible i'd say sign the deal NOW, but it's just not going to happen :(

There is a lot more going on in the background than what we are hearing. This is quite a political situation.

Dont remember it being "political" when the suns recruited Ablett.

The AFL want Franklin at GWS. They are not going to do anything to make it harder for that to happen.

The rules are there for it to happen quite simply. There is no better way from evening up the competition than taking a champion from the top side and "giving" him to the bottom side.

When did the AFL ever care about how a situation looks to supporters ???

True. GWS are but a canton of the AFL, led by one of Vlad's former employees/sycophants.

Against this backdrop is the Essendon drug scandal which is causing the AFL problems beyond the obvious. And the bloc of dissatisfied clubs massing.

In someways, the timing is opportune for us if Buddy does indeed leave. That's still, however, far from a given despite the persistent, drip-fed press.

Aren't you a nuff nuff....all the above bar Gunston were trades from decades ago...different circumstances then....the issue here is we have a salary cap, but 3 clubs are granted a much higher salary cap and we have recently had free agency introduced, but 2 clubs in the comp don't have any free agents, coincidentally there also 2 of the 3 that have a much higher salary cap. ADDED to this is the prospect of the AFL paying outside the salary cap for gws as well.

This is an unprecedented situation of manipulation, under this unprecedented situation (if it were to eventuate) we deserve to be remunerated/compensated fairly. Your "EXAMPLES" have no relevance to the prospective Bud farce, assuming he were to leave (which he hopefully won't in any case)

Hypothetically I'd absolutely do the number one pick for Buddy, assuming he's gone anyway. Why not get something of value in this hypothetical situation instead of pick 20.

Hypothetically, you trade pick one to a club with pick two to four, collect something (like an exchange of second round picks) and then use pick #2-4 to get Aish.
Could pan out to be a Tambling/franklin situation.
We have a history of being spoilt with talented forwards, Boyd will see us through to 2025.

I have a gut feeling that Freo and Bud have something going. All this GWS stuff is a smokescreen.

With all their draft concessions and extra salary cap gws couldn't get one top tier player to their club. So the afl tries to manufacture a move by offering additional money outside the extended cap. The rules were already unbalanced but the clubs agreed to it. Ambassador money is pure manipulation and the clubs are not going to stand for it. If the afl want the clubs on side their needs to be a compromise somewhere. The afl want buddy in Sydney badly so given they were willing to manipulate the situation through the ambassador money, why would they suddenly want to remain within a strict interpretation of the rules to appease the clubs but still get what they want?

Echols has hit the nail on the head previously on this subject.

The AFL are controlling this whole Franklin/GWS show.

What bigger name, apart from Ablett, than Franklin could there be to promote AFL to Western Sydney ?
The AFL are very concerned about the A-League and desperately want to swing things back to their code ASAP.
Money won't be an issue for the AFL to get there man, Pick 1 will be just a by-product of this controlled situation.
Fortunately Hawthorn will benefit from this 'trade' (not free agency)...how much it benefits remains to be seen.
