Hypothetical - Sam Darcy or Nick Daicos

I reckon this thread will be around for the next decade.

Bevo was asked about it recently specifically Daicos vs Darcy and said mids tend to control their own destiny more than key forwards and left it at that.

Darcy still has heaps of growth left in him, mainly due to his size and the fact he’s a key forward. Daicos, who can still get stronger, is probably already 90% of the way to his ceiling which has already had him among the best few in the comp in any given week. That’s not a knock, just an obvious point that Darcy’s still nowhere near the finished product.

If you were picking right now and wanted a baseline player to build your team around ultimately you would pick between one of these two players and depending on your team structure and system you would pick accordingly.

I think a team like Geelong would take Darcy, he suits their culture and type of play better than Daicos, but if I was a team like Gold Coast I am taking Nick every day of the week. The right answer to this question will never really be known, I think Darcy has a higher injury risk and more likely to have a bad game than Nick. If Darcy isn't kicking straight his impact is way lower than Nick who has more opportunity to impact the game. Sam Darcy is a big man and more likely to have his impact hindered by wet conditions, he is good below his knees but on a rainy day 100 out of 100 teams are taking Nick.

Nick is probably going to be better for longer and have a bigger impact across his career but with how Darcy is looking he may have a few better individual performances that look crazy. You would expect Darcy to kick 10 at least once right? We know Nick is a generational level player in finals and clutch moments, we haven't seen that from Darcy yet so I think right now Nick is the safe bet that most teams would make especially the ability to stay on the park. Availability is the best ability after all.

The AFL should make sure neither of these players are umpired out of games by squibs trying to drag the sport down to their skill level.

Nick is not close to 90% towards his ceiling. I would say closer to 70%, once he gets his forward craft and i50 set shot scoring from the pockets at an elite level he takes his game to a whole new ceiling. Think he has room to bulk up a tiny bit more and work on his contested marking (not joking).

We have seen something like his tackling go from subpar to elite and game winning (see HTB on kozzy last game in the final q) and I expect his forward craft to do the same. Nick should be able to be dusty like in the forward line and by god Jamie Elliot needs to teach him how to take a hanger already.

Mister Darcy. Manages a large estate, associated cattle and produce, and a large contingent of labour, in spare time he rescues friends and foe from calamity, and has shown a great ability to adjust and improve his behaviour and performance off of often painful feedback from men, and women from the village. He has an excellent vertical leap, and outreaches most or all defenders. He has a great marking grip. His mobility is of a 6 footer, works well on both sides of the body, and is nimble enough to affect tackles and make quick position across the ground. He is versatile enough to go into the middle or back or creat the link between defense and attack. He may prove impossible to stop. His kicking skills are exceptional, as is his decision making. His skill set is the rarest, thus the most valuable.

Which is why it will lead to strong debate and threads like this, there is no denying Darcy could be anything and has Natural tools that have rarely, if ever, been evidenced in the game.

Bevo is spot on though, forwards are generally more reliant on the tools around them. Daicos is already a proven quantity and he will get better as his body matures, id have my money on him if I was a betting man and if i were to pick one of them to lead my team, at this junction, i'd take a guarantee rather than a promise.

Darcy easily imo.

I dont think Daicos will be even top 2 from that draft, hes just had impact early on but imo the ceiling is lower than JHF, Darcy and Callaghan.

Any Pies fans who reply to me with anything about Daicos' achievements so far are coping so hard, they know im right

Callaghan?

This is a tough one, it would obviously depend on many variables with the broader team.
What I will say is that, despite being a Geelong supporter, I want to watch Dogs and Pies games when either of them are playing. As a fan of Aussie rules they are an absolute delight to watch.

What are you talking about? I’m replying to his comment about a 21 year old at his position having impact at 21.

You said you're always taking the quality tall.

Then you're not taking the soon to be inducted legendary utility player, the greatest clearance player of all time, and the best pressure forward of all time.

As good as Buddy was, he ended up being used as a decoy in his last season with us.

Spot on. We desperately need a key forward. Dear is on his way back but is still very green. Lewis cant have a team built around him.

Darcy with another pre-season or 2 under his belt and some weights sessions is going to be SCARY.
First game back after being out for a few months and he looked like he hadn't missed a beat.
Athletic, mobile giant that can mark and kick goals. Yep give me that please.

Buddy wasn't even top 3 at Hawthorn. Hodge, Cyril and Mitchell had more impact. Hawks did fine without him, and even got better when he went to the best team.

In all of those great encounters the Cats vs the Hawks, Sam Mitchell was easily and consistently the Hawks most threatening, damaging and best player. I prefer to lineup how good a player is when he plays against the best opposition over a period of time and to why I've always regarded Sam Mitchell as one of the most underrated players that has played the game, especially when drawing comparisons to the likes of Hodgy, Buddy and Cyril. To me, he was simply a better player and those games against the Cats easily proved that.... Sam was always Geelong's greatest threat, in fact if it wasn't for him we would have one many of those games by a far greater margins if it wasn't for him, he was that good a footballer.

Awesome player was Sam -

When I was watching both Daicos and Darcy in their under 18 years, I commented to mates that I'd pick Darcy ahead of Daicos. But I was wrong given how good Daicos became at the level, and how quickly he did it.

The most logical way to judge Player v. Player is to work out how many of the best individual games each player has if you were to combined their best 10, 50, 100, 200, 300 games over their careers.

So far, if you combined their best 10 games, Darcy would contribute 1 or 2, whilst Daicos would have 8 or 9.

If you combined their best 50 games, Daicos would have more than 40, whilst Darcy would have less than 10.

Darcy has a fair bit of catching up to do, but it's exciting that he has 'potential'.

And if you're going to pick a shiny new toy after you've been embarrassed with the many other comparisons made in the past, Sam Darcy would be the logical choice.
No it isn’t.

It’s who can you put a defender on and reduce his influence.
Darcy has a tagger every week.
It takes a very good tagger to handle Daicos, but it’s been done enough times for everyone to see it’s achievable.
Darcy has what it takes to be the GOAT.

If i want a premiership I'm taking Darcy everytime.
