So you say the club wants to target a key forward in the up coming draft, yet Gunston who's only 25 is one of those players who could be on the trade table? It doesn't make any sense. He has the most scope for improvement.

Quality key forwards that can kick 50 goals a year are very hard to find. When Roughead retires next season or the year after, who's going to be our future full forward and center half forward? If the club goes with Schoenmakers and O'Brien as the two key forwards next season we're screwed.

Gunston should be put in the same bracket as Rioli = untouchable
How are the intoxoxation levels when you're typing this post?
Stunned by the constant offerings up of Birchall as trade bait. Showed in his minimal games this year he is as good as ever. Without Hodgey we need leadership back there.
And when he's back the flow on effect is we free someone like Gunston up to do something most of us have been crying out for - playing forward.
**** me, four posts? Wind up merchant.

For mine, it's one thing working with Sam to get him a win-win, and Lewis whilst messy got a crazy 3 years for the oldest 30 year old in the game, but I can't see us moving on our mid 20s premiership stars unless they ask to leave.

Some of you guys are going to need to get your head around it.

It's been said numerous times now, by many, that we intend to be bold, just as we were last year.

Wright will look at what is being offered and make decisions based on where he thinks we can get value.

He won't be trading everyone, but be prepared to lose favorites for the right deal.

I agree, I think almost anything is possible.

This being said, if we were looking to trade someone like Gunston or heaven forbid Cyril (which I don't think will happen) it would have to be a magnificent deal, much better than just a draft pick this year.

I would be very surprised if we still have Frawley, Strats, Birch, Poppy, Shiels, WhiteX or Duryea by the end of the year, clearly we won't lose all of them but two or three is pretty plausible.

Last year (on Perth radio) the Sam Mitchell trade was mentioned first but something else that was just as startling was also mentioned that got forgotten in the shock and hysteria surrounding Sammy's imminent trade.... That GW walked into Etihad with a list of players that are potentially on the trade table that had oppo list managers in total shock...
So, after the short comings of 2017 what makes people think that some of our favourites are untouchable?? Obviously not in a fire sale for anything kind of a way but deals that suit our needs.

So the Lions have pick 1 on the table and Rayner is a stand out in the Dusty mould that we would love to add to our list.

How do we get pick 1 is the million dollar question!!!

Does Gunston plus our 2018 first round pick in what is being talked about as a super draft get us a look in for the pick 1

Brisbane always fold in trading - offer them Hartung, Whitecross and Hawka with a 5th round pick and they'll jump at it.

The same Gunston who could not wait to get back to Melbourne when drafted by Adelaide? He may be traded but it won't be to Brisbane.

I don't get this whole mantra of 'we need a massive list overhaul'. If you'd talked to me after the Port game then yeah I'd have given you a sympathetic ear. However, the latter half of the year showed that we are only a few pieces away from building a team that can make finals again.

Breust I can cop - I love Punky and would be at pains to see him go, but if he helps get a classy youngster who's going to fill a more crucial need in the side then it has to be done. I think he is probably the most replaceable of the younger players who are being bandied about.

Birchall - maybe. But the returns would have to be good. Yes his age profile isn't as desirable but I feel he'll replace the leadership vacuum down back now that Hodge has gone. What little we saw of Birchall this year showed what a vital cog he can be. Imagine Birch teaming up with Sicily, Burton and Hardwick - it would be brilliant to see.

Frawley and Stratton are palatable losses - although I still think Stratton is one of the most underrated on our list.

The two who I think are utterly irreplaceable are Cyril and Gunston. Cyril for the reasons I pointed out earlier. Gunston - if we trade him then it's lunacy of Michael Voss 2009 levels. He's 25, is a leader at the club now - he can go forward and kick 40-60 goals a season and can also now go back and rack up 30 quality touches as a rebounding defender. He's quite possibly the next captain of our club. I know this is all hypothetical - but if we trade Gunston it will be at our peril.

Just a general thought bubble.
Some on here are jumping to the conclusion over the last page or two about trading out stalwarts for 2018 draft picks in a supposed strong draft and concluding that the hawks are could be going down a full rebuild path. I don't necessarily see this as the only option should we trade for draft picks, as we have seen on these boards some are besotted with the draft and draft picks and others get stuck in the realm of like for like trades.
Could we just be trading back into the draft in order to deal with a club that love the draft and not player offered (trade), so in essence be using picks to get ready made players and not using those picks on draftees.
Anyway.:thumbsu::rainbow:

Bold yes, but hopefully not ruthless. Last year Mitch was happy to move and Lewis was a bit of a mess, but in the end he picked the Dees. It's a bit different telling Gunston smith or Breust to move because we want a first rounder. They've earned the right to move only if they are willing. We handled Mitchell and Lewis departure as a win-win for all. that's class. That's progressive. None of these guys are rolling out for Brisbane , Gold Coast or north in season 2018. If they are willing to move you'd imagine it's only to a contender.

we DONT need to trade an established player to get into the draft, whoever thinks this is as dumb as the establishment AFL media, who are led by a fat drunk buffoon in Robbo.....
Just bottom out then, that gets you back into the pointy end of the draft. Buuurp.

With Gaz bailing on GC they could really do with some strong leaders, wouldn't be opposed to sending Shiels & Poppy for Will Brodie. Shiels needs a fresh start, both will provide a hard edge and much needed leadership at the Suns.

Brisbane would do that trade but I don't think I would, Rayner would want to be pretty special.

Plenty of people on here seem to think that despite us having traded off a club legend and another outstanding long term player last year (after an ok season for the club), everyone of any value on the list is now untouchable after a disappointing season for the club (including guys who were considered for trade as part of the O'Meara deal last year).

The list is currently nowhere near the top sides. We finished 12th. Get ready for changes.

I think we are still a long way off and wholesale changes as some are suggesting, are still exactly what's required.
Personally I believe it was purely some shrewd coaching and an ultra defensive set up which allowed us to stay in games and get some desirable results in the second half of the year.

Baffled that people are naming Shiels as a tradable player.
Can't see Birchall, Frawley, Gunston, Rioli or Smith being traded aswell. Guys like Duryea & Whitecross might be shown the door.
I can see Stratton being traded

Baffled that you think the club won't try to improve the list after finishing 12th. The only way that happens this year is by trading good players. Duryea and Whitecross have no trade value.

Ask yourself these question...

Does Clarkson wants success?

Does he define success by having a competitive season?

Does define success by winning a flag?

Does he define succes by winning multiple flags?

I think you know what his aim is. Sustained success.

Yes, that will likely happen. Not disputing that. But explain to me the logic in trading a player like Gunston? The first round pick they might get in exchange could turn out to be another speculative draft pick that may end up turning into a Beau Dowler or Mitch Thorp!

The lack of key forwards is one weakness on our list and Gunston is the only one who can play that role. Last season he dominated being the go to player inside 50. This is who's left; Schoenmakers, O'Brien and Vickery. That is horribly bad key forward stocks to have in reserve.

It's much easier to replace a quality midfielder then it is to replace a quality key forward. The club built around Franklin and Roughead. Likewise they should be building around Gunston, Rioli and co by building a formidable forward-line for the future.

When did I say the club won't try to improve the list?
Just thought those guys I listed wouldn't be traded. actually having a 2nd think Birchall could be moved on and Bruest be kept

Guys like Birchall, Puopolo, Stratton are a few noticeable names that i think will be traded

Birchall
Puopolo
Stratton
Duryea
Whitecross
All 2017 picks
All 2018 picks

Imo. This will be enough bait to get any player we are in the running for

Cyril is our most marketable star, no chance in hell he'd be up for trade.

I love your recent list management posts, there was many (can't remember if it was you) last year who would shoot down anyone who suggested senior players could be traded. There's still some people who do the same when Punky gets mentioned, I am 100% in the corner of "all moveable assets are on the table".

We need to change our age demographic, we need to improve with young talent and we need to be bold. Top 4 isn't that far away if Wrighty can push the right buttons, very keen for the Off-season.
