We need to trade for an emerging A grade midfielder in the 19-22 age bracket to compliment Titch and Jaeger. Happy to trade a combination of Birchall, Stratton, Shiels, Langford or Puopolo and next years 2nd rounder (must keep our 1st rounder!) to get one. Maybe Big Boy if we think Cegs and Pittonet are ready to go. Must make tough decisions to gain as much young ready made talent as possible. Would not trade Smith, Gunston, Breust or Rioli. Keeping Roughy and Silk is self explanatory. Would keep Frawley because we don't have an obvious replacement yet.

Matthew Kennedy would be perfect. I hope the club gets him. Even if it means trading away a Premiership player.

You're looking at 2018.

Clarkson and Wright are looking at 2021. There's so much more at play, than how we will set up in 2018.

I'm not saying Gunston will be traded, but if the right deal is tabled and he's open to it, then it might happen. Some of these deals would need to be pretty good, obviously. Wright isn't stupid.

What most people here depend on when discussing the current list is things like "if we get the best out of this bloke, and this guy recaptures his form we could challenge top 4 again, we just need another midfielder and a tall forward...etc, etc."

Needless to say Wright and Clarkson are looking to set us up for continued success, with multiple chances to win a flag in future years, not a sneaky chance to compete for 1, so they can't rely on blokes recapturing form.

If Wright and Clarkson think that means we need to do a reshuffle this year and look to bring in our next Hodge, Mitchell and Franklin in the next 2 years, then I think we should be all for it.

The players would be well aware of the need for change, and despite probably not wanting to leave, who's to say the promise of an extra 200k a year and the opportunity to win another flag in the short term isn't exactly what they are looking for.

Buckle up.

Thanks, Abasi, for your repetitive posts, getting us emotionally prepared.

Last year, we were all taken by surprise.

Entering 2017, the Club passed on the leadership batons. The idea was that our 26-29 year olds would step up and do the heavy lifting. Didn't happen.

We have lots of players in that age bracket, but only one rose to the challenge - Big Boy.

Right now, I'm down on my knees, giving thanks that we don't face this situation with Bucks & Eddie in charge (let alone c*ckhead).

Let's buckle up & enjoy the show as Clarko & GW attack the trade period.

Everyone keeps focusing on out of contract players, it doesn't necessarily have to be the case. Would like Kennedy but Carlton seem to be the front runner. We really need to poach a young midfield talent from GWS even if it is at the end of next year. Looking forward to trade week as I can see Wrighty and Co being super active again!

Do people seriously think we'd get something worthwhile for Shiels? We'd be luck to get a 3rd rounder

Jack Redden secured a first round pick. Shiels would do better than a 3rd round pick.

Lachie Whitfield, was a Hawthorn fan growing up... would compliment our midfield nicely.
Need one more young bulldozer (Ollie Wines/Clayton Oliver type) in and under midfielder as well.

Everyone upset about every club pillaging our coaches, think of the flipside. It could be a big advantage dealing with them and their clubs. They also know the true value of some of our players, especially the ones with great leadership qualitites, and may pay a nice price to get them in trades.

Would we put Big Boy up for trade (good fit for GWS - Mummy is cactus or Bulldogs) or Birchall to replace Murphy/Boyd or Shaw? These 2 teams are contending and have an excess of midfielders. Would we use Frawley in a trade if we snagged Trengove as a free agent? Thoughts?

We won't win the flag in 2018 and I'd be surprised if we challenged again until 2020. Throw 3 years onto each of those numbers and it's pretty clear which players should be considered for trade if good deals can be struck.

The simple question has to be this: are we more likely to win a premiership with the player currently on our list or the player / draft pick we can trade them for? If it's the latter, the player is tradeable.

That wouldn't make much sense.

Frawley out the door, just to get Trengove in....nah.

We need less players who will be 30 in 3 years time, not more.

Lachie Whitfield supported the Hawks as a kid???? First I'm hearing of it!!!!

If only his cousin had been at the club too - that would seal it!

Trengove is a free agent. We trade Frawley for player/pick? Trengove replaces Frawley for free and we get something good for Frawley. Just an idea. Happy to keep Chip for now.

He would harbour that love today, 100%.. 2 guys I know in particular spent 6-7 years at an AFL club and both went straight back to supporting their child hood team. He would come home if we gave up enough to GWS, why wouldn't he?

That article is a ripper.

If we want him and we are willing to pay what his worth I see no reason why he wouldn't want to join us. Maybe i'm reading into it too much but based on how he talks about the Hawks its almost like a plea to come get him!

We should be able to get him, we need him, why not?! :D

So the Lions have pick 1 on the table and Rayner is a stand out in the Dusty mould that we would love to add to our list.

How do we get pick 1 is the million dollar question!!!

Does Gunston plus our 2018 first round pick in what is being talked about as a super draft get us a look in for the pick 1
"Pick 1 is on the table", said every year by the club with pick 1.

What's the date on the article?
