Pets **** I hate cane toads

My girl, Bella, is at the vet's tonight, fighting for her life, after eating a cane toad. She's on a valium drip. The vet says if she survives the night she'll be fine. Needless to say I won't be sleeping tonight. I've been bawling my eyes out for the last two hours. Come on baby pull through.

Whoever introduced these ugly useless things into Australia needs to be shot. I realise they're probably already dead but pull them out of their grave and shoot them again.:thumbsd::(

God, I hope she gets better soon! Poor thing.

I have never seen a cane toad in my life tbh. In Victoria we don't see them (at least I think not) much if at all.

Tell us the story man

Having two dogs of my own, I've really got my fingers crossed that Bella pulls through for you, mate.

Aaaargghhh! Cane toads are vile, disgusting creatures. I've seen quite a few of them on my travels through North Queensland and hope I never see one again in my life.

Tell us the story man

I took her and my boy dog, Jack, out for a walk about 7 o'clock. We walked along this wall that had a few geckos on it. Bella jumped at and caught what I thought was just a gecko. About five minutes later she dropped to her belly and wouldn't walk any further. Sometimes she does that when she thinks it's too hot to walk. So I said "Come on" and dragged her by the lead a bit. When I dragged her I noticed her back legs weren't moving. She then started shaking. I realised straight away that it must have been a cane toad. I picked her up and ran home. When I put her down at home she lay on her back and started convulsing. My nephew called the vet and we rushed over there straight away. The vet put her on a drip. Now we're just waiting. Jack knows that there's something seriously wrong. Usually he's energetic and happy. Now he's just laying on the floor looking sad. They haven't been seperated since I got them four years ago so I don't how he'll cope if she dies. For that matter I don't know how I'll cope either.:(

I'd say more people are going to get to see them rather than less, they've been found in Broome after originally being released in QLD. So they don't mind a trek...have been found in NSW but not sure how far south.

They were introduced to eat beetles in sugar cane fields in the 1930s. Basically we're stuck with them now, just like rabbits and foxes. At least there was a reason to introduce the cane toad (although they didn't even eat the beetle), rabbits and foxes were introduced for sport.

I hope the little girl pulls through ok!

That cane toad in the video better have been dead before they did that.

After what my girl went through and is still going through tonight I hope it wasn't. :thumbsd:

The vet just called. I had my heart in my mouth when he called because I thought he said he would only call if she died. However he said that she is awake and looking around so that is a promising sign.

just out of interest, on a more scientific note, do cane toads actually add anything to the ecology of australia, aside from feed for animals when they die??

most animals have a reason for being in the environment they are, but these guys don't seem to have much. they aren't native, they were introduced.... even their original introduction reason's for pest control wasn't thought out very well, even for the time that it happened (1930's according to wiki)...

Correct me if im wrong, but cane toads are a danger to Australia's ecology.
The cane toads poison is poisonous. Although, for memory there is one type of Australian snake that is immune.
They breed like crazy, take away food resources away from our native amphibians.
I always enjoy watching videos of guys in car who purposely swerve left and right on roads running them over.
I hope they never make it down to Victoria.

On a side note, i dont think any introduced species to Australia has provided any positive impact to our environment.
I remember a doco that went through all the introduced species, and the only creature introduced that didnt cause a negative impact, was the dung beetle, mind you i dont think ive seen one...

The introduced species i hate the most are rabbits and birds such as the Indian Myna and the Starling.
None of em are any good to look at either.

i guess because of australia's isolation from the world for so long, as well as most (probably all, not 100% sure) of the pacific region that introduced animals are always risky, but perhaps it just wasn't properly understood 50+ years ago.

but it's not something i'm particularly well versed on.

Australias isolation from the rest of the world has meant the ecology of this land has evolved with little to no predators. Most of our animals have not evolved with any defence mechanisms to counter introduced species.

A prime example of this, is the story of the Dodo bird of Mauritius.
The Dodo evolved with no need to fly and no need to fear any predators. But once Europeans reached Mauritius, feral animals and humans alike, preyed on the bird and drove it to extinction.
The only thing that is saving many of our native animals from extinction, is our massive land mass, but also, it makes it far more difficult to contain outbreaks.

The Cane Toad basically has very few predators in Australia, as none of the potential predators are immune to the cane toad's poison.

Australia's eco-system has many predators, such as birds and snakes, that prey on native frogs, but when a species such as the Cane Toad is introduced it throws the system out of whack (that's a technical term...) and can lead to extinction of certain native species in some cases, as they will compete for habitat, etc..

One interesting example of the impact of cane toads which I only read recently was that there may be a link between cane toads and a declining goana population (via eating cane toads), and a potential rise in saltwater crocodiles hatching (with less goana's stealing the eggs).

How is Bella going?

I picked her up from the vet today at 2. She is still heavily sedated but is fine.:thumbsu:

My boy Jack was so happy to see her he tried to hump her, even though they are both desexed.

Very sorry to hear that Noddy, I hope the little fellow pulls through and ends up ok. :(

That sucks... Hope this video cheers you up...

Wow... burning an animal alive. What a hero.

Cane toads may be pests but they don't deserve torture like that, kill them if you have to, but leave the sadistic shit out of it please. It's not the cane toad's fault it's an ecological pest, not like it can help being a cane toad. I hate the w***ers of that video more than I ever will a cane toad. Remember, cane toads were introduced to control the cane beetle. So really, it's not really their fault, ultimately it is humans to blame. Then people do stupid shit like burning animals alive simply because they don't belong there, and were at the wrong place, at the wrong time. Morons who call themselves 'conversationalists', when in reality, they are a bunch of rednecks who are closet sadists and are exercising such a want on an animal where they will most likely not get into trouble doing so.

This is why we don't make decisions in an emotional state.

Precisely.

People call cane toads disgusting... I say the real disgusting creatures are the people who do the sort of shit that the YT video shows.
