I've often admired the Jesuits, and outfits like Jesuit Social Services seem to be animated by a notion that holiness can be found in all people and need not be bestowed by a self-selected caste of self-serving arseholes. But alas, they are the exception.

The Jesuits have a bit of ground to make up currently after being responsible for educating Abbott, Shorten and Joyce among others.

A number of Shorten’s classmates feel they let the country down by not bullying him hard enough.

Well I was trying to balance my diatribe, you know, to find some positivity and look on the bright side and all of that. So let your examples stand to show that a Jesuit education can't cure egomania, but doesn't necessarily create it.

I was more thinking of types like Father John Brosnan, I guess, who spent decades working at Pentridge among souls everyone else loudly damned.

It is not so easy to leave it all Markfs (though the only way to go), the church and religion is so entwined in people's lives it means throwing out the baby and the bathwater. I grew up in a small mob - they have got a little publicity lately, the 2by2's or church with no name. Was an avid believer but left at 19, thankfully I chose a live in Uni course and escaped the brain washing. I wasn't excommunicated as such, did that myself because I knew how I would be treated. Changed my relationship with my father, don't speak at all to one sister. Relatives gone. Friends gone. What to do on a Sunday? What is right and what is wrong?

Point is, for a lot of young people in Australia, their family and its traditions are so caught up with religion that leaving it all behind often leaves you without much to move forward with.

Didn’t read the article but as a newly-qualified bush immunologist, I can advise that the herd immunity threshold for Covid-19 is said to be 60%. That is 15 million Australians. If 15 mio people catch it over a shortish period the health system wouldn’t cope, plenty would die, likely civil unrest etc. That would be the disaster.

I read news.com to check the pulse of murdoch. It was just a vent. The lifestyle writer was talking about that 60% being immunised. Obviously, that's difficult to do and not really a choice for the gov't as no cure has been found. What she meant to write was how you put it..... if we release the hounds and get 60% of the community immune to getting it again because they have already had it before. That's immunity from having had it, not from being immunised. It was vent on a long standing problem that i have with young inexperienced sometimes-uneducated writers of news on websites like news.com who dont report the facts, but want to sexy the story up or sell the story better. Most of the time these writers are writing about what kind of underwear a hemsworth wears and i'm sure she is superbly expert in that topic.

This describes my family's circumstances. My wife and I were married in church so that we don't upset the parents, my kids will not get married in any "holy place" (if they get married at all).

The days of the church are numbered but their assets remain protected by the state; all this valuable land and treasures beyond our comprehension. Kids everywhere are homeless and starving, economies are faltering...How are these fat robed f****rs helping now? Oh yeah, they're paying for Pell's lawyers.

i'm paraphrasing the bible so I hope Jesus forgives me, but I think he said to judge people not for what they say but for what they do.... in fact, I think that's a pretty good philosophy and the church's money hoarding real estate grabbing ways says it all...

Our government will go into debt to help our country through this crisis, I wonder if our "religious/spiritual leaders" will dig that deeply into their pockets?

I think the government have gone too far with some of their subsidies and payments, and the likes of free child care should be means tested. Taxpayers will be paying for this virus for a long time. Would not be surprised to see franking credit refunds ditched by the government despite it being one of the key issues in their last election win.

I am not a Catholic but I think people need to read up on the evidence before they judge Pell. There was a 6 minute window in which he had to rape 2 boys, and the 6 minute window wasn't even that as there were many witnesses that saw Pell in that time frame and he had no chance of doing what he did. This was trial by media and he was a scapegoat for the church. There are plenty of other Preists that are really guilty, but this one was a farce.

If the case was as clear cut as you claim and abuse was impossible in that time frame, there was no way Pell would have been convicted in the first place. However, I was surprised he was convicted on the word of one victim and expressed that view at that time. However after watching part 3 of Revelations on the ABC, I was left in doubt that Pell is a pedophile. He was also a powerful figure who was complicit in protecting priests who had so obviously committed numerous crimes against children.

No doubt that we will incur a debt that will take a generation or 2 to pay off, and you may be right in that the government(s) might have gone too far but I'm at peace with it.

I too will suffer financially if franking credit refunds are taken away, and my business has been closed down as part of the COVID-19 measures. I'd rather that in hindsight we are judged as having helped too much vs too little. This is not an easy one for any government to get just right AKA Goldilocks.

I also have doubts about the watertightness of the case for which he was convicted then acquitted, but I am convinced he is a pedophile. Whatever he is, he is not my idea of a cardinal and I am unimpressed by the pope's positive reaction to Pell's acquittal. I don't believe anyone would lie about being abused by a priest of Pell's stature. If you haven't watched Revelations part 3 then I suggest you do so.

The Morrison Government is the Government of “surplus, surplus and more surplus”.
Faced with this crisis they have become the Government of “spend, spend, spend” to prop up a failing economy.
I‘ve no problem with this. I believe debt is better than the alternative of people on the streets starving, turning to vicious crime just to fed their family.
This big spend has been done with the support of the opposition and the media.
But, could you imagine the present situation with a Shorten Government?
Do you think the opposition of the “surplus, surplus, surplus” mania would support such a big spend? Would the Murdoch press support the Shorten spend?
While I was devastated by the election of Morrison, I do believe that he has had a free pass to do what needs to be done. I doubt Shorten would enjoy the same good will from the press or the opposition.

I think a lot of the rich and powerful support the super spending by gov'ts for two reasons. First, its the oldies getting cut down by the virus and many of those in charge of running the world economy are not youngsters and second, a lot of the spending is directed at business and the rich and powerful love welfare for business.

It's a fair question, but, do you have anything in particular that you would like for them to spend money on? You can't just stand on a street corner handing out hungies. They will suffer just like the rest of us.

Along similar lines with social distancing, I'm not using the 1.5m rule but thinking of it more as the Jarryd Blair rule, you're too close if you are less than a Blair's height away.

The stories about people trapped overseas and also being placed in quarantine in hotels, are annoying me. I think the government has a duty to assist australians when they are overseas. Isn't that what the foreign affairs dept was created for? Not just an facilitator for business. However, there are limits on what it should do. It should try to smooth the departures with the local gov'ts. The high commissioner has done that in india. However the Australians trapped there appear to be saying that the gov't should organise a free ride home. It puzzles me sometimes how australians can get to a country and live there but have no money or assets to pay for their return. I think Australians need to have an exit strategy from countries when they go there and in some remote locations that might mean checking in with the local embassy, at least electronically. I would hate to see restrictions placed on aussies travelling by gov'ts who simply want more control of their citizens....a la terrorism and secrecy legislation. But there is a role for personal responsibility in all of this. As for those stuck in hotels, there might be a case that the hotels are taking the gov'ts money and providing stuff all service to the returning travellers. However, if I have to eat fishnchips for 2 weeks then i wouldnt be bitchin......and having written that i feel better.

Bolt is not a reporter.
He is not a journalist, he has no credentials.
He is a commentator, nothing more, nothing less. And as such he is not held to the same rules as real journalists.
Therefore, he cannot be trusted.
