Tigers win Wallace race
By Greg Denham
August 2, 2004

TERRY WALLACE will replace Danny Frawley as coach of Richmond, with an announcement expected within days.

In a coup for the embattled club, the 15th-placed Tigers have beaten bottom-of-the-ladder Hawthorn to the punch in recruiting Wallace.

A source close to the Tigers last night revealed Wallace's appointment would be ratified at a regular board meeting on Tuesday night, pending finalisation of arrangements with his management group.

The recommendation of Wallace from the three-member selection panel will be made official in a presentation to the Tigers board.

The panel consisted of football director Greg Miller, consultant David Parkin and alternate board member Bryan Wood, who was brought on to the coaching sub-committee late last week as part of a peacemaking deal between president Clinton Casey and rebel leader Brendan Schwab.

With four games remaining, Richmond will be in the unique situation of having a current coach and an official coach in waiting.

Hawthorn will be disappointed to have missed out on Wallace as he was their priority to sign for next season after they sacked Peter Schwab.

But events over the weekend bought Hawthorn more time to find a replacement, especially Adelaide's upset win over the Kangaroos.

The Crows' victory, after last weekend's 141-point pounding by the Lions, may have clinched the full-time coaching position beyond this season for caretaker Neil Craig, who has won two of his five games since the demise of Gary Ayres.

Both Wallace and former Swans coach Rodney Eade held formal discussions with the Crows.

If Eade is to re-ignite his head-coaching career, it can only be with Hawthorn, currently being coached by caretaker Donald McDonald.

The Hawks can take their time to decide between multiple premiership players Eade and Ayres and a group of assistant coaches from other clubs.

The only competition for Eade's services will come from Collingwood, who have offered him a newly-created specialist coaching position under Mick Malthouse.

Wallace, 45, spent the best part of the past two years working in the media since quitting as coach of the Western Bulldogs with one round remaining in 2002.

He was set to be appointed coach of the Sydney Swans, who sacked Eade in 2002, but they opted for club hero Paul Roos.

Wallace started coaching mid-year at the Whitten Oval in 1996. He coached the Bulldogs in 148 games for 79 wins, 67 losses and two draws. In almost six full years, he took the Dogs to the finals in four of them for a total of seven finals matches.

They were knocked out in consecutive preliminary finals in 1997 and 1998 by eventual premiers Adelaide. Wallace is well regarded as a master tactician and an innovative coach.

He has some pedigree at the Tigers, having played 11 games for them in 1987 after falling out with Hawthorn following the 1986 premiership victory.

Wallace played 174 games for the Hawks in nine seasons and played in three premierships.

After a single season at Richmond, he finished his playing career with the Bulldogs for whom he won two best-and-fairest awards.

He won Hawthorn's best-and-fairest awards in 1981 and 1983 but has not had the best of relationships with the club since leaving. He was controversially overlooked for the club's team of the century and was not invited to the function.

Craig isnt a bad coach , look what hes been given to work with.. lack of confidence, lack of cattle, hes gone 2-3 with them and weve beaten two top 8 sides.. the crows right now are a pathetic squad of players...

Weve had so many changes to the list during the season with retirements, young players forced to do jobs they cant, and hes still managed a couple credible jobs...and he coached well in the clinches against North I reckon... he deserves his shot.

Either him or Eade would be good selections as our next coach.

Trigg did say in that email that his feeling was that Wallace has been lined up for one of the melbourne jobs already.

Well maybe if we'd got off our complacent arses sooner we could've lined him up - and therein lies the problem and the source of our collective discontent.

Craig is an SANFL-standard coach who plays tactically inept and unaccountable football.

Eade is by far the outstanding remaining candidate.

This is a clear example of not being able to please supporters.

The club copped SO much sh|t for head hunting Shaw and not considering other candidates. They copped so much flack for not going through proper process.

Now that they do, they still cop a lot of crap.

There's a big difference. Shaw was headhunted from Fitzroy. Eade and Wallace are both coaches who took clubs with limited playing resources to the pinnacle of the game.

As for going through the 'proper process', exactly what is that? Have one coach who was an existing assistant and is effectively - by his and the club's own admission - 'auditioning' for the job, which seemingly gives a clear disadvantage to the other so-called "candidates"?

That isn't a "proper process" - that's nepotism.

At the end of the day, weve had 1 shocker with him. Against Sydney we were never going to win, they are awesome at shutting teams down, especially at the SCG, they simply choked (dont use this word lightly in the port power board) Brisbane...they were always going to beat us. Fremantle had too much class for us and we still nearly grabbed it.

Beating top of the table Melbourne and a red hot Kangaroos team with a bunch of over the hill veterans and undeveloped youngsters gets a pass in my books.

Valid points.

I am willing to give Craig a chance

Like we all gave Angwin a chance?
Like we all gave the Carey trade a chance?

Urgh... you'd think the club would've learned by now to stop taking blind punts and/or to listen to sound advice.

Dyertribe we dont really know what the crows are doing... Wallace couldve (a good chance) said he didnt want to leave Victoria.. he couldve chosen Richmond ahead of Adelaide...who knows... heck the Crows might pick someone outside the ''3''.

We all know that unless there's an act of god, Craig is almost certain to be our coach for the next 2 years at least.

Just like it was a given Carey would goto Collingwood, things can change quickly...

I trust the AFC (well sort of..) to make the best decision for the club.

Whether thats Craig, Eade, Jonas or whatever...

I will support Craig if Adelaide appoint him, BUT

1. I will demand Trigg's head and do what I can to initiate a no confidence vote (if possible in the AFC structure) if Craig does what I think he may and thats turn us into a permanent bottom four club that will struggle and battle for every win.

2. If I hear Rucci once criticise Craig after all the BS and praise he has been writing I will personally phone 5AA on a Saturday morning and tear him to pieces as he is one of the main culprits of pushing Craig down everyones throats.

It may all sound drastic but I have feared this and I would be very happy for Craig to prove me wrong, but I can see already that we arent going to be active in the trading process nor delisting players as Craig has already shown that he is too loyal and nice to the players (his press conference saturday night). Tactically there are some big question marks and he has shown already that he applauds mediocracy (press conference after the fremantle game) which Cahill was critical of when he mentioned about Craig and Cahill questioned his apparent lack of hardness with the players.

I just see all of this adding up to total disaster, as I said before I hope the AFC has/will made the right decision I just hope Craig doesnt turn out to be another Ken Judge

just a question isn't the journo the one David Parkin was talking about on Talking Footy this week. The one that didn't have any of his facts right. I suppose we will just wait and see. It is interesting to read that he has written Eade off, that we aren,t interested.

Trigg won't be making the decision. His voice will be heard to some extent but the board are the ones that will make a major decision like a coaching appointment.

WOW couldnt see this happening!

looks like we will have people over the border shaking their heads at us! not that i can blame them.

what sort of club sits on their arse and lets the best possible coach available slip through their fingers?

The Adelaide Football Club:rolleyes: :(

If Wallace does take the Richmond job, it will be because that is his genuine preference. It will not be because Adelaide "didn't move fast enough". No-one with any brains, who is up for three jobs all to be decided in the next few weeks, takes the first offer just because it's the first. Take a pill, everyone. :)

Craigy

I personally dont know how the afc could even consider appointing Neil Craig as coach, he has coached SANFL clubs Norwood and Sturt and did absolutely nothing, if he cant even coach SANFL clubs why consider him as a AFL coach.
Keep in mind he is also caught up in the cycling australia controversy, is that the image you want for your club?
If Neil Craig connot work with these boys there is a problem, you are all saying craigy has been given nothing to work with, how long has craig being at the club? long enough to the boys and how they all play!
all Craigy is doing in putting nails in his own coffin one by one! please dont appoint somebody like Neil Craig coach of our great club!
