Always thought he was ok. Looks like he might have an opportunity with Mundy going down. Still looks a bit weedy though.

I agree with the weedy part, he looked to be very slight in the shoulders, upper back area. I would have thought he'd have some more bulk through there with the time on the list..

Like his input though, and he might be a great sub for us. Geniune pace and the opposition won't bother marking him..

How did Palmer go in the WAFL? If Ballantyne misses aswell as Mundy will be interesting to see if Rhys gets a run.

Very well (34 disposals from memory), but was played predominantly in the midfield. We might be seeing Mellington make his debut next week rather than Rhys.

Certainly deserves to hold his spot on that effort.

If he can put together a few games it will be interesting to see if he can perform for the next couple.

Got to say i couldn't believe it when he wasn't delisted at the end of last year, was alot better than i expected today. I'm still pretty doubtful about him, but has improved significantly.

Could never really understand all the hate for Hinkley. He's still bloody young and should improve, and his form at WAFL level warranted selection. Better than giving games to players that barely get 10 touches in the WAFL. And he did look better as the game went on.

Still, we'll see how he performs at the MCG next week.

Was ok, surprised he had that many kicks to be honest. At least he went hard at it.

I also thought his number 1 asset ws his speed? Had the opportunity in the last to really burst away and potentially kick a nice running goal but was caught in no time

Most of his kicks were dinky little chips/stabs which doesn't worry be tbh, at least he played within his limitations.

I still think Palmer would have offered as much if not more though were he given equal opportunity.

I have nothing to add....

Except that anybody who suggests Hinkley as an out this week is an idiot, and I'm assuming got their mum to translate their uneducated grunts into actual sentences.

You know, if Mundy wasn't injured I'd probably suggest Chinks as the man to make way for Barlow.

Who else is there really? It's either him or Crichton and I think Crichton is the classier player with more potential.

*thanks mum

But Mundy is injured, so you don't need to suggest dropping Hinkley for Barlow and miraculously, your problems with diction have disappeared.

Well done !! :)

Oh, who am I kidding?

Hinkley was very impressive today. As soon as he came on, he was attacking the play and laid a couple of strong tackles within a few minutes of coming on. I've never thought he got enough credit for his attack on the ball, and he showed that well today with that free kick he got.

Couple of average handballs, sure. But how clean were his hands picking up the ball off the ground? Didn't look like he would fumble it. No issues with his kicking either. The only thing I would suggest, is the same thing I say after each of his games - that he needs to be more selfish. That is why he got caught when he could have run off with the ball, his first thought was to pass. But football these days is all about being a team player.

He'll rightfully keep his spot next game, and as much as I would like to see him play a full game, it will probably be as the substitute again.

Try not to go blind before his next game okay? ;)

I'm also in the 'not convinced' basket with Clinkers - but I certainly was impressed with what I saw today (though haven't seen the whole game yet). Like to see him stay in the team (which he probably will) and see how he goes over a few weeks including a big test next week at the 'G. If he gives us that sort of game I may be swayed further to the 'Chris25 side' of existence.

I doubt many of us are going to elevate our opinion of Clinkers to the level of Chris' support over one game, but it was great to see him do well. I'd certainly like to see him get a few games on the trot.

I honestly never knew he was 22.

Anyway theres time for him to develop and he definitely improved as game wore on.

He handballed a few times to people right next to him, seemed a bit rushed when he had time.

Also went with defensive handball often rather then take it and turn and go.

Easy to look ok when playing against a team that showed no effort in Essendon.

If we had 3 players coming back woul be hard to keep him. However should get another run and best of luck to him.

Still looks a bit panicky when he gets the ball - and that's pretty much the number 1 thing I look for when assessing the class of a player.

Having said that he played his role well today. The problem as I see it is he's one of those guys who only needs to be slightly off his game to become a liability.

This is exactly how I see it. :thumbsu:

edit...

And agree with the bold bit here. Though in fairness, a lot of young/fringe players often try to be almost too team oriented in their early games. I'm sure he'll get better and do the natural things when he feels his spot in the side is more secure.

Much better than expected, was almost like he killed Bambi when he was preferred to Barlow..

Re: the panicky look when he gets the ball....

I think it's just 'his look'.. in so far as Mark Waugh looked like he couldn't give a stuff most time's at bat..
We're lucky we have 2, Kep the new born foal, Chinks the deer in a headlight.

did well.
Wouldnt of been expecting to get an opportunity until late in the game.
Was required early an he jumped at the opportunity an took it.

Def should play again next week.
Melbourne are a fairly quick side so guys like him will be needed.

LOL, Papa likes. :D

Add Barlow the lame duck waddle and I make that three

Woaha, were you at the game? .......it's not just about numbers. It's not hard for afl mids to rack up big possession counts. Schammer does it every other week...

Palmer was ok inside, and he ran hard all day......but his disposal into the fwd line was simply not good enough. There were several times that he took possession well, broke the lines with a run and bounce only to shank the kick into the fwd line. He also took a ridiculous shot from the members pocket when the game was in the balance while obrien was unmarked and screaming for it.

IMHO he HAS to improve his delivery into the fwd line if wants a regular midfield position at freo.
