Have a look at the current Ladder will you......
8. Adelaide 1689 cf. 1640 (+49) 102.99%
-------------------------------------------------
9. Port Adelaide 1696 cf. 1647 (+49) 102.98%
Given how amazingly close that is - how are they separated at the end of the year for Draft order? Or for finishing perhaps in the finals or just missing out if they have exactly the same For, Against & (obviously then) Percentage?
It's never happened before so I believe this is uncharted territory, but I would propose the following.
The AFL would ask both clubs (given they are in the same state it makes this possible) if they were amenable to a one-off Wildcard play-off with all proceeds being split EVENLY between the two clubs played at Adelaide Oval on Friday August 30, 2019 - during the pre-finals Bye round.
But why would either team accept? Well - how would they be split?
What are the benefits?
A BIG PAYDAY for both clubs. A big UNEXPECTED PAYDAY.
A bumper crowd getting the whole state pumping. What could be bigger than a one-off Wildcard Playoff between the two clubs such as this? Probably only an all SA Grand Final - which obviously isn't going to happen anytime soon.
A last and BONUS "Home" Game for both clubs this year.
Finishing 8th they will not be hosting any Finals anyway - this would be a last chance for a Home Final for either club.
What are the downsides?
Makes it harder for either team to go all the way and win the Premiership by missing out on the Bye.
But HONESTLY - does anyone really think either club has any chance of all at lifting the Premiership Cup in a month's time? Really?
And again, how are they split anyway if not a proper match?
Anyway - given the unique circumstances (same state) - the AFL should have the flexibility to ask both clubs if they would agree to such a MONEY-SPINNER in the unlikely event they finish with exactly the same Percentage.
If both clubs agree. They should announce that this week before Round 23 so everyone knows the stakes going into the last round....
What do people think? And in particular - what do Adelaide & Port Adelaide supporters think?
Agree? Or not?
