Heavy on talls. 4 smalls, 1 ruck, 4 KPP types.
We went reasonably tall last year - do you think we'll load up in a similar vein this year? I guess I'm slightly worried that we might end up - down the track - with only 1 or 2 players from the draft, seeing as talls generally have a higher fail rate. I suppose Prismall allays that fear given as he's virtually a 3rd round pick with fast forwarded development years.

The rookie spots and pick 71 may change. I have been working my way through doing a phantom draft and there are a few blokes that i rate more than those i have nominated who look like they will be pushed well back into the draft.

Something tells me that you love this time of the year Ant.

You seem to be thriving full of knowledge and excitment.

I think with pick 71. we should use it, and take Davenport, rather than wait for the PSD. Unless we invite him and a couple of others to training and let them fight it out for a spot.

Ok trade week is done. My phanton draft is done.Essendons final desliting was done. I have had a week or so to consider all the thoughts and posabilites and i have made some changes. Have changed my first choice as well. I find it hard to seperate the top 4 or 5 mids by any real margin but i have gone back to my original favourite for pick 5 in Hartlett simply becasue he has one thing that a couple of others don't and that is pace. If we are going to add class to the midfield then it may as well have something else we need and that is good pace. Have changed a couple of the late / rookie selections around.
So here goes version 4 :D

Pick#5
Hamish Hartlett – 182cm, 74kg – West Adelaide
Highly skilled midfielder with very good pace. Has good hands in close and is a one touch player who rarely fumbles. Reads the clearances very well and has good skills on both sides of the body. His positioning and work at the centre bounce is excellent and he sets up play well. Will push forward and kick goals and can kick the ball 50 meters. He has a good side step and is evasive in close situations. He was tagged most of the way through the Champs and although in some games his numbers where not high he still made a pretty good contribution although he could have done a bit more work in and around the packs to loose his tag. One down side to his game is the fact that despite being highly skilled he can still produce a few lazy kicks at various stages which is more of a concentration thing than anything else.
Has played senior footy in the SANFL.

Other options Steele Sidebottom , Jack Ziebell , Steven Hill, Chris Yarran.
Reason I still think we need to take a class midfielder early. Picking up Prismall is an upgrade on a midfielder we would have taken mid draft and i think there are a few talls to work with later on. I have gone away from Hurley here simply becasue IMO his DC results rule him out of being in the best 8 players and there may be talls later on who can do just as good a job at FB.

Pick#23
Jordan Lisle – 196cm, 87kg – Oakleigh Chargers/Carey Grammar
Tall KP player who gets used at both ends of the ground. Good strong mark who has good foot skills and kicks the ball a long way.For a big bloke he is reasonably good in traffic and has reasonably good pace . Has a bit of a question mark on his agility, his turning circle is not great. His goal kicking is pretty reliable. His defensive side is good and he reads the play well which enables him to get to contests in the back half. Already has a good frame and he holds his position in the contest well.

Other options: Trengove (if avaialable), Jayden Post, Tom Lynch, Zack Sengstock.
Reason I think that drafting Lilse here fits our requirments.

Pick#55
Steve Gaertner – 198cm, 88kg -Dandenong Stingrays
His lack of consistency, average foot skills and a slight lack of footy nous cost him at last years draft but it has been good to see that Steve has gone away and worked on a few areas that have seen his game improve a lot. He has spent more time at half back this year and he does look comfortable in that position. He likes to rebound and carry the ball through the middle and his game sense has really improved a lot this year.
His problem area is still his kicking. Although he is not a really bad kick he can be prone to just throwing the ball onto the boot and trying to unload which leads to mixed results. His defensive efforts at half back have been very good. For a big bloke his pace is pretty good and he can take a strong contested mark.

Other options Tom Hill (if available) Andrew Hunter , Riley Milne (if avialable) Jordan Jones.
Reason Once again going tall here. Slightly though choice here. My first choice would be Hill but i think he will be gone so i have gone with Gaertner who is tall, quick and can play defence well.

Pick#71
Jay Shannon – 180cm, 82kg – Port Magpies.
Midfielder/forward with good pace and skills. Did well in the clearances and looks a natural midfielder. Reads the play well and gets in to find the ball. Work rate was very good. Uses the ball well. Gave SA plenty of drive every time he was in the middle. Gets under peoples guard a bit because he does not do a lot excitingly well but what he does do is pretty good. Not your star midfielder but a very good workhorse with good skills.

Pick#87
Taylor Gilchrist – 189cm, 70kg – Sandringham Dragons / Caulfield Grammar.
Used mainly as a forward early in the year but has seen some action in defence in recent weeks. Tallish, skinny kid who has been played mainly on the flanks or in a pocket. His pace is pretty good and his running from half back has been a feature of his defensive play when used there. He reads the play pretty well and he gets to a lot of contests to help out. His kicking is generally good and is handball is very effective.

Rookie#1
Michael Gugliotta -194cm, 82kg – Nightcliff /Northern Territory.
Tall and mobile, he was one of the promising young players from NT state side last year. I only got to see him the once this year and it looks like he has continued to progress well. Has good hands at ground level, good pace and runs hard all day. Has played a number of roles when I have seen him play including half back, half forward and wing. Likes to attack the footy hard and is a pretty good contested mark.
His down side is still his kicking. He does not kick the ball a long way and he seems to kick to contests a lot. Just seems to have a bit of a lazy kicking action where he simply kicks it anywhere. Have not seen him try and use his left side in games I have seen him play or in highlights.

Rookie#2
Matt Thomson – 175kcm, 65kg – Queensland / Redlands.
Small rover who found a heap of the ball for Queensland during their champ and TAC Cup games. Pretty good user of the ball on both sides of the body. His clearance work is very good and his handball in close is very good. Gets in and under but is a smart player and he runs to areas where he can receive the ball as well. His pace is only average. For a kid his size he tackles really well. Will do the one percenters. He leads his side on the field.
The fact that he is rather small and not super quick counts against him being drafted but he is a natural player who someone should take a chance with late in the draft.

Rookie#3
Levi Casboult -196cm, 95kg –Dandenong Stingrays.
Ruckman who is not overly tall but uses his leap well and wins a lot of hit outs. Gets around the ground ok but never gets really big numbers. Pace is good and skills are pretty good for a tall. Can take a good contested mark.
Probably going to be too short to be drafted as a ruckman but his mobility and great leap would possibly be used to make a strong defender. reads the game pretty well which is a good start.

Rookie#4
Rhys Stanley -199cm, 84kg – West Adelaide.
Ruckman from South Australia. Has a good leap in the ruck and his tap work was ok without being outstanding. Pace looks ok. Did not do a lot around the ground in the couple of games I saw him play so that is one area that needs to be worked on. Skills where ok. Would be very much a project player.

Rookie#5
Matt Cunningham – 188cm, 78kg –Eastern Rangers.
Hard running defender who is playing his third year of TAC Cup footy. Has a fantastic work rate and is prepared to run off his man to get involved. His defensive side is very good and he does the disciplined things all the time. Has reasonable pace. In the past his kicking had been a real problem for him but this year he has improved a lot in that area.

Love this ant good work expecially happy if we got Steve Gaertner later on. Seems like hes got alot of good attributes just lacks decisionmaking skills and footy skills at times.
I agree with pretty much all of it however my knowledge of the draft lacks after Gaertner ;)

If we go hurley i rekon Swift will slide personally. many people believe he will go top 15 aleast however alot is difference between 16s and 18s let alone men. Personally i believe he could slide to pick 20 if were lucky 23. However if not theres always okeeffe or smith who seem to show plenty of tallent and theres always good sliders. But atm i am leaning towards a mid first round as you are purley because they usually have more of an impact on the game then a defender.

ant, I like the idea of picking up a project tall in Gaertner as well as Lisle, but I think we need to draft a ruckman as well as rookie one. Casaboult doesn't have the height to ruck AFL level (from your report), and would turn into a Ryder-type tall in the best case scenario. So I think that a ruckman in the ND might be a better option.

Gaertner could actually be that ruckman. Doubtfull he would be a number 1 but he has rucked. Is reasonable at it. Has great around the ground assets and is 199cm. There is no doubt that he troubles the lesser mobile ruckman at under 18 level. He will not be your number one tap winning ruck but he could certainly give you something different as a number two .

Anyone know if we've shown interest in Hartlett?

I know the poster KING_JAMES said we haven't spoken to him, but that was a while ago.
I don't know anything inside the club, but not speaking to him doesn't really mean much.
We have interviewed a lot of players, most of which we probably have no intention or chance of drafting.
We've probably also not spoken to a player in the past then selected him anyway.

Pick 5 - Tom Swift - cute
Pick 23 - Rhys O'Keefe - seems like a nice young man
Pick 55 - Tom Allwright - pretty hot
Pick 71 - Clayton Collard - nice kid, bought me a drink
Pick 87 - David Gourdis - seems pretty friendly

I don't know these players as well as most on here, but fromthe highlights I've seen and likely availability I'd like us toi take:

Pick 5: Hamish Hartlett

Pick 23: James Strauss

I think our biggest issue is class onballers, both these guys are silk. We should use the later picks on best available, but having said this our list needs more KPD prospects and a ruckman and it would be good if there were any decent ones available.

I like Skippy, but wouldn't be happy if we drafted him. He's excellent for Bendigo and acts as a mentor to some of our younger guys. He had his shot at the highest level but wasn't quite up to it.

Davenport is a bit of a late bloomer and is quicker and taller than Skippy. I think he would've got a game at most clubs this year, but cracking Geelong's midfield when experienced, inform onballers are getting the job done 23/25 games a year is a pretty tough ask....just ask Prismall.
Fair enough. I just don't like the fact he never even played one game. I guess what I'd be looking for with that pick is a player I know could come in and do some sort of a job, (I think it's a bit of a forlorn hope searching for superstars that late) & I think Skipworth's closer to that.

cause he was rated a better prospect than Daniel Rich, the apparent "superstar" of this years draft. every pick is a risk, this is just going to be a bigger risk, and its not like he is goingo to become a superstar overnight like everyone wnats all these first round picks to be, everyone wants a Rhys Palmer, or a Cyril Rioli, Joel Selwood to walk into the AFL and dominate, reality is, it just isnt going to happen, all that often.

thats all....
He was rated higher... in U16s IIRC. A lot can (and probably has) change(d) in that time

Excellent :thumbsu:

I want to be the first to officially jump on the Michael Quinn bandwagon. Ant (or anyone else), did you see him train? If so, how did he look?

Shame that Ian Ryan declined the offer, but I guess it was better that he realised that he didn't want to be a full-time athlete now rather than later on once we'd invested further time and money into developing him.

5. Yarran
Class! (or Rich if he magically slips)

23. Davis
Key back, with Lisle as my 2nd choice.

55. Sloane
Medium back, might not be available but would be a great pick up. Post or Allwright are other options.

67. Rounds
Bottom aged, quick mid/half back.

79. Stanley
Or best available ruckmen; Clarke or McCulloch might be an option.

Wouldn't mind Skipworth if the club thought he's worthy. Rookies I would try go Hislop if there. Other than that would include; 2 KPP's & a ruckmen.
