If anyone is interested in iOS applications and their design and development, there are a couple of conferences and workshops in Melbourne in the next few months.

One More Thing (Sat Aug 13) - a one-day conference where Australia's leading independent, self-started iOS developers will share their experiences

Swipe Conference (Mon Sep 5 - Tue Sep 6) - the leading iOS and Mac developers from around the region and beyond are brought together in Melbourne for two days of in-depth sessions on designing and developing for iOS and the Mac

For the first time, Apple are selling unlocked iPhones in the US ($649/$749).

Probably very welcome news across the Pacific.

Perhaps anyone travelling there later this year could buy an iPhone 4S/5 and bring it back.

Even after you factor in the exchange rate, it's over $200 cheaper. If a 64GB model comes out in September, the saving will probably be closer to $300.
Code:
                AUD USD
iPhone 4 8GB $859 $649
iPhone 4 16GB $999 $749

Is anybody else having a problem with the home button on the iPhone 4?

Mine has become basically unresponsive after 9 months.

I centroid my 3 contract or any proof of purchase anywhere either which I assume is a problem if I need to get it fixed/replaced.

Take it to a genius bar. Will have a new/refurb within 15 minutes.

Don't need any proof of purchase with a Genius bar visit. They will check the IMEI, make sure it matches the one in your name (I think they ask for a piece of ID, License/Credit card).

Real noob question here. I have never jailbroken my iPhone, but I probably will assuming I get the next model in September. My question is, if I jailbreak, can I still pay for apps or do you get them for free? I have no issue paying for apps, I want the extra functionality that Apple is deathly slow to add to iOS.

You can do both. There is a jailbreak app called installous that allows you to download apps for free, but without it you have to pay for apps.

Thanks for the advice guys. Went to the Apple store at Chaddy today and got my phone replaced with no hassles at all.

Guess it helped that the two blokes who checked my phone repeatedly pushed the button without success.

Warranty extended as well. Impressed with the service to be honest.

On further investigation I found that the problem is a shitload of lint getting in underneath the button, and if any moisture gets in as well it becomes like glue.

Is it possible to Unlock an iPhone, without jailbreaking, or without going through your provider?

Reason i ask is that im in KL at the moment for work and wanted to get a Sim for my phone, problem is im locked to Optus.

Nope.

Check the Optus website. Some providers you can do it through the website.

lol, my first time jailbreaking was both exciting and scary.

There is plenty of youtube guides out there which I recommend you first watch then jailbreak.

If I can do it, anyone can.

One catch though add as many games as you want, but be careful adding tweaks and utilities to your iphone. I noticed that caused the biggest problem initially for me.

I had to do a complete restore as I got overly excited, lol my first time.

Read up on IT Fail safe mode too, dont panic it just happens if you have downloaded onto your iphone buggy software.

I am sure the other experts here can articulate jailbreaking better than me.

Also google top 10 jailbreak apps/tweaks as this is IMO they must haves in any jb iphone.

good luck and if in doubt ask here, or just do a factory restore.

Got a bit of a problem, my phone has been stuck on the update screen like that one^^ for a good 18hrs. I've unplugged it, replugged it and the computer/itunes doesn't recognise anything is plugged in so i can't restore it via itunes (checked services and apple mobile device is running) . I've also tried the hard reset (sleep + home button for 10secs), but that's not doing anything either. Probably because the home button has been playing up for the last few weeks.

Ive tired programs like recboot, and tinyumbrella and they're doing anything either.

Am i screwed? Im taking it to the genius bar later, but I want to try everything first to try and save my contacts and other stuff.

If you havent JB then take it to a Genius.

Don't know about saving all your contacts though ... (don't you have them synced with Google, or Windows contacts?)

Hey guys, I've been trying to back up my contacts because I'm getting my phone unlocked to bring it overseas but I'm having issues backing up the phone numbers.

I followed a youtube video which said to choose SYNC CONTACTS in itunes and sync with Windows Contacts but then when I opened the contacts that were saved to my computer only some of them actually have the phone numbers listed. My understanding is that only the numbers listed under "mobile" in my iphone contacts are copied and not "other", "home" etc.

I've also tried the right-click, "back up" option but I'm not sure if that will do the job so I can then "restore" the phone with all contacts and numbers when I return.

Is there any way to copy all the contacts and numbers to my computer without going through every name in my phone and moving the numbers to "mobile". Will syncing with Google Contacts work better?

I use Google Contacts and it's great. I don't know much about contacts with hotmail, yahoo mail etc. If you don't have a Google/Gmail account, set one up.

Go into Mail, Contacts and Calendars, add a Microsoft Exchange account. Server is m.google.com.

Is it still worth getting an Iphone 4?

Should I look elsewhere or even wait for the Iphone 5?

Looked through most of the capped plans and not much has changed since the iphone4 was introduced.

Any suggestions?

I'd wait. September isn't that far away. Rumours suggest an incremental upgrade on the iPhone 4, so nothing groundbreaking. With any luck, the phone plans will be better than current ones.

Thanks, all my contacts and numbers are now listed when I check my Gmail account at the computer :thumbsu:.

Some of the contacts in my phone have doubled but I'll just have to go through and delete them. At least I've got the numbers backed up.
