IQ Test

Undercomplicate you mean.

Yes but that complicates things. I'm not the best at maths but I know about cubed roots, prime numbers etc. but for some reason when it's presented as "What is the next number in the sequence" I always think it is a matter of subtracting or adding a special way.

The Stanford-Binet is the most reliable and widely used IQ test. It's administered in about 50 different languages and contains different questions based on your place of origin to avoid culture biases.

The average IQ is 100 with a standard deviation of 16 (used to be 15 for fellow psych readers). Meaning that around 97% of the population falls between the IQ range of 68-132. Given that, this test is yielding unusually high results so its not accurate so far as normal results are concerned.

It has been pointed out that this test is quite mathematically and spatially laden, I tend to agree with this. This can also skew results.

Also be aware that the Stanford-Binet and other tests like the one linked test 'academic' capacity - mainly reading writing and arithmetic as well as a little cultural knowledge.

There is a litany of tests out there that test other forms of 'intelligence', such as artistic abilities or music appreciation and understanding.

As a rule of thumb, these tests (and big eds tv test a few years back) are just for fun. Let me know if you folks have any other testing questions.

On the St Kilda AFL site under Luke Ball it says "test".
Will he pass? lol

No seriously, would you agree that for any such test to be accurate it would have to have a range of questions which are more "targeted" to the individual taking it, in regard to socioeconomic circumstance, geographic location and life experience?
I mean any adult with say 40 years of life experience is far more likely to do well than younger person who has limited life experience.

Interesting. Got links?

As for the standard IQ tests, one of the better online ones IMO is the one at www.highiqsociety.org. They also used to have a genius test, which was difficult beyond words. I believe the highest ever score was 21/30. I think it's gone now, though.

I was going to do that test, but I've just spotted a notice from BF wishing me a happy birthday - 74 today - so perhaps I won't. It might be too demoralising to have confirmation of the diminution of my powers, such as they were.

Is there a test for wisdom? There must be some benefits to getting older.

Haha, I haven't belly laughed like that in a while!

I couldn't agree with you more. As an example of how this is taken on I'm pretty sure the Aussie Standford-Binet used to have the question 'what is Don Bradman's batting average'. Of course you wouldn't see that on the Japanese version of the test.

Questions, sections and the total test will validated in a number of different ways to ensure that they measure what they're supposed to measure and that the results are indicative of the population their measuring as well as reproducable.

The test is also scaled against age because people with live experience tend to be better equiped to handle the questions.

It's a pretty resiliant little book of paper really and like our forward line is constantly being remade when the questions get too old or no longer server their purpose.

I can certainly point you to a few different tests that are out there. Unfortunately the scoring keys and sometimes the tests themselves are not available as they are copyrighted and are provisioned on a pay by use basis.

Psychological and Emotional Tests:

The Rorschach Inkblot Test
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rorschach_inkblot_test

The Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) - Actual test and scoring
http://homepage.psy.utexas.edu/homepage/faculty/gosling/tipi site/tipi.htm

The Big Five Personality Test - Actual Test and Scoring
http://www.outofservice.com/bigfive/

Is similar to the TIPI but a more detailed test. Here is a breakdown of what the big 5 mean. As you can see this covers artistic ability and the like:

  • Extraversion - energy, positive emotions, surgency, and the tendency to seek stimulation and the company of others.

More Intelligence Tests:

Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wechsler_Adult_Intelligence_Scale

And one for kids the WISC

Music Appreciation:

I don't know quite enough about these tests but I can point the way.

Kate Hevner continues to arise when looking at music appreciation, this bio has a reference to her prominent articles, which include music apprecation tests which seem to stand up:

There's more but I'll leave it at that. Have fun doing the tests... I might do the big 5 later hehe.

Well lets look at the test in the link.

I did it again, this time as an 18 year old girl. Exactly the same questions, which I answered exactly the same and I scored 147 as opposed to 146 originally.
I did it again as a 36 yo male, exactly the same questions, and purposely answered a few questions wrong, I got 148?

I think this particular tests is simply a random number generator.

The moral of the story? Online tests are fun and that's about it.

Somehow I liked you better as a female Pie Eyed. Hehe.
