In the last little while Ed has made sounds regarding the clubs fortunes which I think haven't really served the best interests of Collingwood.

With the AFL talking about introducing academies in NSW and QLD and the picks which will come from that and adversely impact the rest of the competition, including us, I reckon Ed should have staked out a stronger position. His response was to moot zones for Victoria when really he should have staked out a position of rejecting the academies altogether and the free hits to the northern clubs which will allow Sydney and Brisbane to access father-sons AND academy players. If that plan continues unabated then we will be put in a disadvantageous position as clubs like Sydney and the Lions continue to double dip on talent.

It's not the time to weaken our claims to father-sons with a rash of them on the horizon while we simultaneously give passage to the northern states. It's time for Ed to remember who he is advocating for.

And tonight following the Carlton loss, he was way too generous. He's a commentator and I understand he wants to present himself as impartial in relation to Mick's fortunes given the history, but he bent over backwards here.

I reckon Ed needs to sharpen up his Collingwood advocacy and stop worrying about the perception of his role.

Re: this, you have to choose your fights. It seems that the AFL is 100% set on keeping the academies and not budging, furthermore to get a change like this he not only has to convince the AFL, but get such a resounding support that the CEO's of the 4 northern clubs are completely drowned out. I think he's played his cards very well here because I see the only alternative based on the AFL's stance, was keeping it the way it currently is. Can't really comment on the rest.

I don't have a problem with the academies but they should be run by the AFL and not the clubs and all kids from the academies should go in to the draft like other players.

This would help promote the sport in the north without compromising the draft.

Welcome to 2009? And nah Ed is till the main man when it comes to equality in the AFL along with Newbold.

the less controversial stuff Ed says the better.
Let Ed play his role in the media, but not overshadow everything else at the club.
I love his role at the club, and think he passion is 2nd to none, but sometimes I wish it would be best if he just keeps quiet about things.

Eddie would never be quiet and he would never leave the Media work he does

He can't win, he gets criticized for not being "enough Collingwood" and then he gets criticized fro being "too much Collingwood"
Generally that means he is doing it about right

You can't say we barrackers don't take a balanced approach. :D

But you hear other Commentators being very Anti-Collingwood though

I would happily scrap the whole father and son thing in favour of having an academy.

If Collingwood want the Daicos kids, and if the Daicos kids want to play for Collingwood, then we would simply put them through the academy like we would any other kids with talent.

But I'm not fans of any of their teams. I am a fan of the Pies, and I personally would like Ed to be a bigger man than some of those guys. (which I think he is... and particularly with the way our club has approached a number of off-field issues).

Watson is by far the worst IMO - is completely one eyed when it comes to anything related to the Bombers or Hird. (Obviously doesn't help with his son also playing for them). I just can't stand hearing him in the media... I worry that that is probably how a lot of non-collingwood fans feel about Ed.
---

I am more than happy with Ed continuing with his job in the media - that is his primary employment and he is very good at it.

I am also more than happy for Ed to continue being an amazing advocate for our football club - which he is very, very good at... just do it with the AFL behind closed doors.

I just don't want to see those two jobs crossing paths too often because it blurs the lines of what his role is and can put the club in a difficult position at times.

Even IF Eddie does it behind Closed Doors. Other people in the Media will hear about it and talk and report that he talked to the AFL

Anybody who has been to an AGM or member's meeting can be left in no doubt that Ed always has the best interest of the Collingwood Football Club at heart.

Agree but Is that the Right Descions Though?

Yes, Ed's job is to look at the big picture.

An example:

Imagine if Ed had the casting vote amongst the Presidents to wind up Carlton and move them down to Tasmania as the Devils FC.

Many Collingwood supporters would expect Ed to vote in favour of it. But would it be in Collingwood's best interest for that to happen? No way, it wouldn't at all. So he'd vote against it.

Ed doesn't need to say a word about the Carlton/Mick situation. Karma is doing the talking for him.

Now that Malthouse is obviously on the way out of Carlton Ed has clearly been going out of his way to make little noises of support and reconciliation towards Mick.

This is a clever strategy. When the dust settles and Mick is comfortably in retirement Ed wants Mick to take his rightful place in history as primarily a Collingwood premiership coach. We can't afford to have one of those fighting with the club, there's only been 5 in history and only 2 of them are alive.

We don't want any issues like those Richmond have had with former greats.
