I can see a lot of similarities with what's happening now and what looks like happening in the next 4-5 years, with what happened in the first 7 years at the Adelaide Football Club.

1991 - 1994:
Graham Cornes coaches the Crows to 1 finals campaign. Is sacked at the end of 1994.

1995- 1996:
Crows endure their worst era ever, finishing at the bottom end of the ladder both years under Robert Shaw. Unbeknown to Adelaide at the time, Robert Shaw has blooded Vardy, McLeod, Riccuito, Goodwin, Caven, Bond, Johnson, Hart, Connell and a host of othe players who have valuable game time under their belts.

1997 - 1999:
The Crows are taken over by Malcolm Blight, The above mentioned players have 60-90 games of football under their belts, and with the handy tuition of Blighty the Crows win back to back premierships, before becoming somewhat stale in 1999, allowing Blight to leave.

2000 - 2004:
Gary Ayres coaches the club for 5 years (Similar tenure to Graham Cornes) getting the Crows into 3 finals series but NO premierships. Ayres tends to recruit older players like Carey, Burns etc, similar to what Cornes did with McDermott, McGuinness, Jarman etc.

2005 - 2006:
Neil Craig takes over as senior Adelaide Football Club coach. He gives the young kids a go and by the end of his tenure the club has experienced 2 years in 16th to 13th position but the likes of Reilly, Doughty, Skipworth, Rutten, Mattner, McGregor, Schuback, Bock, Hentschel, Smith, Jericho, Watts and Krueger all have 60-80 games under their belts.

2007 - 2009:
An experienced coach similar to Malcolm Blight returns to the Adelaide FC as senior coach. McLeod, Riccuito, Goodwin, Hart etc are all ready to retire and the new era are ready to come through similarly to what happened in 1997/98.

What do people think?

What does it matter to you anyway, didn’t you give up your club membership? Or have you jumped back on board

Nobody can predict what is going to happen in the future especially with the changes that the AFC will make come seasons end, the playing list will change coaching and recruiting positions are going to change, I think the AFC have far to many stale people around the place and alot have to go we need fresh faces with fresh ideas to become a sucessful footy club;)

i suppose the sooner we accept this the stronger the club will be over the next two years of rebuilding

give Reilly, Doughty, Skipworth, Rutten, Mattner, McGregor, Schuback, Bock, Hentschel, Smith, Jericho, Watts and Krueger 30 -40 games all will be forgotten about season "04" l will Predict finals in 2005 if not 2006. The list will be cleaned out and given a new lease on life, by who ever the coach is.

As ugly as the AFC looks today, the club is very attractive if they open the cheque book and pull off a major coup by trading wisely or drafting intelligently for what we need.

no finals untill "08" you idiot.

Let's just hope that we don't become one of those clubs that changes their coach every couple of years..However, it is already looking that way.....

Seriously, the only bad coaching appointment that has been made would have to be Robert Shaw 1995-96 season.

Cornes was the right man for the job, Shaw was terrible, Blighty did his job and won us 2 flags and Gary Ayres was in charge for 5 years finals in 3 years in a row Ayres was a very serviceable coach.

Lets not judge our next coach on opinion and dislike until, he fails, if he even does in fact fail, l know popular opinion suggest he will but until that time come lets not speculate.

should a building process to take advantage of the benefits given by the AFL

P.s you sound like KG calling people idiots for having an opinon but i suppose with a same like that you are living way in the past

You seriously don’t believe that club are 100% truth full on their salary cap payments do you, there are means and ways to get around a payment

You’re entitled to your opinion but to say we wont make the finals for anther 4 year is just over the top.

I think you will find Adelaide will have some spare cash to use with Carey and Smart retiring, not sure about Roo, Hart and Mcleod but they must be close to the veterans list if not already there.

We could throw some money at someone like Cornes (just an example) to lure our way

I do. The AFL are tough on cap cheats and put lots of resources into catching cheats. We are a conservative club. I don't think there is any way we would take that sort of risk.

i dont want them to make it for 3-4 years we need two years of crap ladder positions to get some good players through the draft - whats the benfit of making the finals and not winning the flag especially next year- ok your seen as a consistant finalist but look at melbourne, st kilda, brisbane, sydney, even port adeliade to a point you need a few years low end of the ladder then you make your charge once you've got some low draft picks and players which in subsequent years can be traded for other players and/or low pick to continue to build on the success,
i think essendon would be one of the rare teams going around that hasnt had a really bad year in a while

if niel craig gets the gig he should be honest and say that they aren't aiming for a the finals till 06 at the earliest and us as supporters should grow up and accept that - as much as i hate losing

How old do you think Doughty is? Honest question - because I'll give you the hint, he's a good 3-7 years older than everyone else in that list minus McGregor.

my sentiments exactly! - what is it with Doughty? - everybody including Craig refers to him as YOUNG Doughty - yet he is 25yo (5/8/79) - if he's young then almost 2/3 of our list is young

He's still young in footballing terms.
At 25 is about to enter his prime - good player for depth, but if a club is stupid enough to offer a reasonable draft pick, grab it.

No he isn't. Chris Judd, Adam Cooney, Brent Reilly, Graham Polak, Kane Cornes, Nick Riewoldt, et al are all young in footballing terms.

If Michael Doughty was a 100m sprinter or soccer goalkeeper he'd be considered young.

In AFL terms he is 25yo and is about to complete his fifth season in the system. At his age he would have to be an established first-teamer by now - which he seemed to be before breaking his cheekbone after being in and out of the side for the duration of his career.

If he has a stinker next season he is almost certainly gone (we've axed the likes of Koster, James, Connell and Ellen in the past) - if he was "young" and aged 17-23 he wouldn't be facing an axe like that.

Furthermore, supporters and the coaching staff alike seem to think Doughty is only in his early 20s... "our midfield youth... Doughty" and "young Doughty"; and regularly bundle him with our 'real' youngsters like Reilly, Johncock, Skipworth, Bock, Schuback, Hentschel, Rutten and co.

I don't understand why.
