Roast It's official - AFL360 hates Geelong

I was bemused when Motlop's matchwinning performance against Essendon was largely overlooked by the media.
If Cyril Rioli kicked those two goals in the same circumstances, you can bet he would have been on the front AND back pages of the Herald-Sun the next day and we would have seen replays for a week and half.
A month or so ago the Herald Sun ran two pages of a missed mark by Collingwood's Jamie Elliott, a missed mark!!

Gerard Healy on On The Couch showed a minute of clips showing how good Bartel was in the wet.
Gerard Healy is still a big fan of the Cats from what I can see, but keeps it low key. When others were writing off Enright for example, he understood he was carrying an ankle injury for a few weeks, also was also one of the few to understand or mention how important the return & fitness of Motlop, Christensen & Caddy was going to be.

The media do collectively lurch from one position to the other, it's quite comical at times. Sydney are gone, Freo are gone, the Cats are gone....

I will never forget Gerard Healy mentored and counselled Andrew Mackie through a tough patch in 2009 or 2010. He says he heard Mackie being interviewed and sensed he was in a bad place and took him under his wing. Healy didn't look for credit and doesn't even speak about it, but whatever he said or did worked for Mackie who IMO never looked back and was never at risk of being dropped again.

360 id Robbo's soapbox stand. Whatley is there for the ride - second banana. Its Gerard's job to steady the boat from time to time, that all. Thats how I see it.
When 360 started he told Gerard not to go on and on about Geelong, I think they have taken it too far. Maybe Gerard is afraid of Robbo? But I find it weird other shows talks about us occasionally, but 360 hardly ever does.

Exactly, it's like they won't even acknowledge anything about the club. Look at it from this side, when Sydney smacked us a month ago it didn't even get a mention on 360, but got mentioned on other shows. It was a momentous win and a momentous loss to a side that has been a powerhouse recently. It deserved a few comments. But nothing. I remember I even posted at the time how strange the football media's muted reaction was.

Annoying yes. Few games on FTA - annoying yes.

You will hear most commentators finish their comments about Geelong with "but you would be foolish to write off the Cats this year". They know.

We are boring though. Any team that runs at 80%+ win ratio over 7.5 years is predictable. Collingwood at 62% with Eddie, Bucks, MM however is much more interesting.

Our problem is just sleepy hollow stuff over again. Meanwhile we are under the radar from where we like to prey and pounce.
We are like the hottest chick at school, then some new chick comes from Denmark on exchange - she might not be the hottest, but she's the newest so she gets all the attention.

Its become like the Essendon Defence Council.

I heard a presenter on SEN say yesterday 'even Tom Hawkins must be 30'

Gee all our good players are getting old if that is the case.
A couple of years back the hawks supporters at work were saying how old Geelong where. "You know Scarlo's old, Mooneys old, Selwood old". They couldn't believe it when (at the time) I laughed and said "Joel's only 24". They want them to retire so Geelong becomes irrelevant.

I'd not heard that. I suppose it would have been 2010 when Bomber dropped him late & for the last couple of finals.

The footy media in general is just full of lazy hypocrites who shouldn't have a job in the first place

6 days of the week Essendon are rightfully called out on their bullsh*t. But then as soon as they win a game of footy every journo comes out of the woodwork to praise their 'bravery'

And every day of every footy season Geelong are completely ignored except for the occasional 'Too old, way passed it' jab. Then the moment we finish top four against all the odds at the start of September every pathetic journo comes out to say 'I've respected Geelong all along, I always backed them to keep this up and you can never doubt them, definite contenders'

The fact is, unless a story involves Hawthorn, Carlton, Richmond or Collingwood, the clubs that all of the Melbourne elitists always have a chubby over, nobody is at all interested.

Well said. The way they treat Geelong we might as well be an interstate team.

Correct. King is scarred. Tim Lane knows better. They are all nervous to make "THE CALL" and put their necks out. But once the cracks appear, as they have begun to, they are still cautious about their reputations. No one will make that call.

Presuming we make the finals, the questions about # of games played will come up and can we make the GF?

Go Catters

This is SO true. After Tim Lane made a giant arse of himself, more than usual, and then David King had the balls to say we had no chance in 2011, after having cruised past Hawthorn and West Coast, not a single media person has the balls to right us off, not one. The most they'll rightly say is that, "they're form hasn't been what it once was", and sure, that's true. I'm actually loving this. Even after our Sydney smashing, they still won't make the call, because despite it all look at the wins and points. We're still there, at least until eliminated.

I've heard Lloyd say we won't win it but he seriously changes his tune fortnightly. Garry Lyon said he wouldn't write us off but as you say CatAttack84, they usually add in "they would need to improve a hell of a lot from now until the end of the H&A" and that's as obvious as the nose on your face.

If Slobbo can distract himself from defending EFC and Hird it's mostly a 'controversy of the day' deal and I'd rather not have us talked about in that regard.

We won't get any attention unless we win the flag or fall out of top 4 contention. Anything else is expected, nobody is interested. And let's be honest we aren't exactly playing exciting football.

I just love how we can be 10 goals down at the beginning of the final quarter after playing shit all game and the commentators still think we can come back! "It's unlikely but you can never write this team off". They might not think that we will do it but they can never say that outright- because we've done some magical stuff over the years and.... yeah... "scarred" is a good way to describe it :D

True, they do follow the news story of the day mostly. But when you do a review of the top ten teams, why leave out Geelong? It was weird. Anyway, I disagree with your opinion of Robbo. I think he's been pretty vocal in his criticism of Essendon and Hird. So much so Bomber stopped sitting next to him, and Essendon were said to be seething about many of his articles about them in the Hun.

i have a feeling that this 'my club is hated, everyone else gets talked about all the time' gripe would be an almost universal one amongst supporters.

as a two team example: we know hawthorn are a protected MRP species, but they know we are; we know the umpires love them; they know the umpires shaft them for their 'favourite team' geelong.

i have a feeling we might be getting a touch 'old' in the sense of our sustained success since '04, but maybe its just a case of 'too much not being enough', and therefore it seems like no one talks about geelong...

Wow had to laugh at 360's "analysis" of the Cats. Equal second and we are a total disaster. Oh and apparently there's a question mark next to Bartel...

We know we can put up stats to prove ourselves correct. We know they can't....
