JACK Riewoldt barely sees big cousin Nick through the season and saves footy chat until over Christmas pudding.

But every now and then, text messages are exchanged during the season.

"Nick texted me the other night to say I was going well and he was pretty proud of me," Riewoldt said this week.

And if ever there was some time for some SMS family love, this is it.

Riewoldt has kicked 29 goals in the worst team in the competition, surging into Coleman Medal contention with 14 goals in the past three weeks.

He has more goals to his name than both Jonathan Brown and Brendan Fevola at the same age.

Great story, he's really impressed me this year and, from the sounds of it, we're finally getting the developmental aspects of our game right.

I can still recall him in the half time Devils VFL game kicking comp as a 15 year old. Man was he a skinny lad, barely got one out there at about 40 metres. He has come along way and has so much further to go. Many have knocked him down this year as a third tall and not capable of being a key forward. Well he is proving them wrong isn't he:D.

He needs someone to get into his head and work hard on his kicking routine and he is then right up there with the best. Who knows in a few years people might refer to Nick as Jacks cousin instead of the other way around:D.

He's had one of the toughest apprenticeships out of any of the top forwards in the game atm, and I reckon you can see that really beginning to pay dividends this year. Is starting to carry himself and perform like a veteran at 21. Is scary how good he'll be in a few years, if he keeps working hard... Shows the value of getting as many games into the right kids as quickly as possible. :thumbsu:

I also get the feeling that the level of respect that the lads have for the currrent coaching panel is a lot higher than anytime in recent history. Pretty hard to argue with amount of flags DH, Leppa and Brogan have been involved with.. Quite a few more than a certain N Buckley has if memory serves me correctly.
