Darling has been disappointing only from the perspective of what we see as his base-level output.
From Day One he's been very solid, but has made only a small improvement year on year.

If he followed a similar trajectory of most tall/med fwds we'd be delighting at his development, as it is he's probably only 10-20% a better play than his first year.

Still a very good player, who I would say is very reliable (perhaps with the exception of MCG games).

Worth noting too that he will most likely end up being the Eagles all time leading goal kicker. He's 10th all time already with 216 majors. Sumich is our all time leader with 514 but Darling will eventually have to chase down Kennedy you would expect who sits 2nd with 412.

I didn't see the game, but 16 disposals, 6 marks and a goal seems pretty good considering the game was wet/ordinary.

Odd week to bump it

I'd be interested to note Darling's heatmap for the year?
I find he receives a lot of ball just fwd of the wing.

Another thing to note is his defensive efforts are top notch - doesn't always actually get the tackle, but he at least runs just as hard to tackle as he does when on the attack.

Against Melbourne I noted one chase must have been about 70-80m at full tilt.

Bloke isn't 18 anymore, useless but you're too biased to admit that. I've seen and rate Sheed, Duggan is a future leader, Cripps is inconsistent, pretty good but can't see him developing much more, Lycett is alright but you guys seem to have a hard on for him, Darling isn't even overrated anymore, hes just an ok player who flirts becoming more without taking that next step. I'll admit I haven't seen much of Barrass, so no comment on him, but our next McPharlin is A. Pearce and he has proven he has a very bright future ahead of him, every club would take him. Isn't Redden currently 25? Bloke hasn't shown much, in fact I'd say if Sheed wasn't injured (Sheed has a future, pretty handy player) Redden wouldn't be in your 22.

Yes A pearce seems like a 200 gamer but also watch Barrass. Since he has returned to the side only a couple of footys have been marked near his vicinity. either marks or totaly kills it. He's the the modern KPD with an All round game. similair to mcgovern but more athletic.

I'll keep an eye on him against Collingwood this weekend mate :thumbsu:

Sadly he is now in that territory where he is going to be known more for his mistakes (which unfortunately for him have been catastrophic errors in major finals) rather than what he does well. Looks as though he can't operate under pressure. Ryan Shoenmakers was probably in similar territory but was able to wipe away the bad memories with a cracking game in last year's GF. Hope for his sake he gets the same opportunity and takes it.

Are you saying because Schoenmakers had one good game, everything bad that he's done is now forgiven? Do you forgive him for dropping that mark in the 2011 PF costing you a GF spot? How about when he nearly cost you in the 2012 PF?

He didn't win you the Grand Final in 2015 ffs, West Coast were just awful.

Given we've won three GF's since then, yes everything is forgiven. Your post pretty much proves my point. Shoenmakers has played some great games but is remembered for a couple of terrible errors in high pressure games. To blame the result on one player is weak - but people do it. I'm not saying he won us the GF (please note where I said that) - I just noted he played a great game in the 2015 GF (including kicking the steadying goal we needed in the third quarter).

In 2013, Hayden Ballyntyne put in one of the worst Grand Final performances in the last 30 years. It was genuinely comical, and I thought he might bare the scars of that day for the remainder of his career.
But in 2014 he had his best year, and was selected to the All Australian team.

Right now, Jack Darling would be embarrassed, but he has the potential to let this game fuel him to his best season next year.
If he's anything like Ballantyne, he'll embrace it get better because of it.

Massive 2017 for him.

****ed the eagles in last years gf. Les Cras was shithouse early on for wce too. Big name players have folded for them when it matters.

Emblematic of the issues down at the Eagles. Can seriously play but mentally is just soft as butter. I never bought into the whole Eagles flat track bullies thing but once they get on the back foot they absolutely turn to shit and Darling is the chief offender.
