Very similar incident from 2018.
Defender looking at the ball running with the flight, jumping front on into marking player, high contact made.

1 match suspension. Not a word said of course.

Edit: on second look didn’t have his arm raised in ‘spoiling’ action.

Difference being that this was more of a bump than a spoil.

But how can it be proven that it’s not someone’s intent. A swinging arm to the head is now defined in the rules as “incidental” contact in a spoiling attempt.
I'm sure AFL players will adjust to being hit in the head with an opponents bicep.

Always odd when people complain that a stepped process and clear, deep considerations have been made.

Yes ok you didn't like the original result but these things should go through a process and a successful appeal should be celebrated as a working part of the process not a told ya so moment.

It settles a question in our game.

..or provides the AFL with an opportunity to tinker with the rules.

The report was very similar to the suspension that Chris Grant copped in 97 when it was only reported after the fact and Hollands & the umpire said that there wasn't much in it.

Glad that van Rooyen got off.

I think the word incidental is a curious one because contact was inevitable the way VR charged at the player who was trying to mark. He was never a realistic chance of spoiling.
tend to agree...seems to open up a fair amount of precedent to "attempt to spoil" contact with the head....

i mean, bumping is considered a football act but if you hit the head you risk suspension, so not really sure as to why this is deemed so different? he missed the ball and got his head

that said, it was great for the AFL to have a new controversy for the media to froth over following the weekend of booing buddy, which really wasnt playing too well in the media....

Cool. Now players can again punch players in the back of the head as incidental contact trying to spoil.

This comes down to how a player goes about the contest. And JVR was reckless.

Except JVR didn't hit him in the back of the head, and it's ridiculous to call contact with a bicep a hit.

Bizarre take on the situation
