This situation is being made out to be far more complicated than it really is, because people keep forgetting about the mechanics of the compensation system.

Gresham is on a salary that, if matched, would likely yield band 3 compensation (the pick immediately after St Kilda’s 2nd). Should Essendon offer Gresham a salary in this ballpark, then it would be matched. Jade is leaving for money and nothing else.

So this means that the MINIMUM compensation St Kilda would receive, for losing Gresham, would be band 2 (the pick at the end of the first round, or effectively 19 before other compensation picks or bids are applied).

Therefore, if you want to involve Shiel - an injury riddled, overpaid, 31 year old (before season 2024) due to start pre-season late due to said injuries - then the outcome for St Kilda needs to be BETTER than band 2 compensation, or pick 19.

If St Kilda were to give 13 to Essendon for Shiel, then they’re effectively giving up 19 for a 1 year rental of a clapped out midfielder. Such a proposition is absurd, and this is clear when you take into consideration the above information. The closest suggestion floated here would be Essendon’s 2nd and future 2nd, but that may not be enough depending on how bad Shiel’s injuries are and how much he is on.

Either way, the outcome is far closer to St Kilda receiving 13 and KEEPING it, than it is to receiving it and giving it to Essendon, when the back up plan is receiving 19 cleanly. As I said, it’s not that complicated.

All for the glory of gifting a high draft pick to the opposition and recruiting an underperforming small (who has actually played less games than Shiel in the last 4 years).

That’s not what’s being proposed here. If pick 13 is created by band 1 compo.
The idea is Essednon use $$$ to create a 1st round pick out of thin air (compo system)

Since Essendon and Stkilda are both working together they really own 1/2 of pick 18 each (since that’s what Pick 13 will be after Academy and FS picks.)

Going by the points system that’s about 600points which is a 3rd round pick.

How hard is that to understand.

Independent Gresham has a true value (band 3 compo aka a 2nd round pick which is what the saints are willing to pay him)

So in order for this scheme to be fair St kilda would need to receive the equivalent of a 3rd round pick and a 2nd round pick.

What’s being suggested with the Sheil part of this equation is that Sheil (if Essendon pays his salary this season) is worth either a 2nd or 3rd round pick.
