James Patrick Bulger (16 March 1990 – 12 February 1993) was a boy from Kirkby, England, who was murdered on 12 February 1993, when aged two. He was abducted, tortured and murdered by two ten-year-old boys, Robert Thompson (born 23 August 1982) and Jon Venables (born 13 August 1982). Bulger disappeared from the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle, near Liverpool, while accompanying his mother. His mutilated body was found on a railway line two-and-a-half miles (4 km) away in Walton, two days after his murder. Thompson and Venables were charged on 20 February 1993 with Bulger's abduction and murder.

The pair were found guilty on 24 November 1993, making them the youngest convicted murderers in modern English history. They were sentenced to custody until they reached adulthood, initially until the age of 18, and were released on a lifelong licence in June 2001. In 2010 Venables was returned to prison for violating the terms of his licence of release.
The case has prompted widespread debate on the issue of how to handle young offenders when they are sentenced or released from custody.

I was only 9 years old when this happened so have no memory at the time, but when i first read about this years later i recall feeling physically ill. Venables is back "inside" now for possession of child pr0n with no set realease date.

Lot of stuff to talk about regarding their release and re-naming.

Wasn't one of them (I think Venables) released then busted with child pr0n?

At the time I think the media went apeshit regarding the batteries that were supposedly placed inside Bulger.

Both Venables and Thompson have subsequently "vehemently" denied that it ever took place.

DawOfPromotion anything to add about this case? Were you involved in it at any level?

I was only 11 when this happened but still remember doing this incident for discussion at school. Terrible

I actually watched a program about this the other night. Crimes That Shook Britain I think it was on.

Everyone they interviewed on the program, from the investigating police, legal eagles and the press all said the same thing, Thompson is an evil ****er.

It reminds me of a couple of episodes of Law & Order. One is about 2 kids, one evil little prick and his fat friendless mate who wants the little evil one to like him who rape and murder a middle aged woman and the other was about a sociopathic 10 year old girl who murdered a little kid and then put batteries in him to try and jumpstart him after she'd killed him.

Both should have been kept inside for life. Scum.

Without wanting to start a huge debate, locking kids away for the rest of their lives was considered cruel and unusual, even in the days of Mary Bell (25 years before the Bulger case) and Jesse Pomeroy (over 100 years before), two young killers who were both older and had more victims. At the end of the day, it appears that Robert Thompson has become a normal member of society, while Venables has been quickly imprisoned for what seem to be relatively minor crimes (i.e. he was arrested and imprisoned, before his crimes had a chance to escalate). I mean, when the callousness and savagery of the crime is taken into account, I'm sure there are a lot of people who would agree with you, but I just can't wear the key being thrown away on a pair of ten year olds.

What goes through a 10 year old's mind that makes them kill someone to start with? :(

Child on child homicides and severe assaults are more common than you would think. Children of this age have a limited capacity to decide what is right and what is wrong, and a limited capacity to understand the permanence of the outcome of their actions- there is considerable research on the matter if you look in the research into the Psychology of Moral Development in children.

I'm thinking the same thing evil to the core those 2.
No child of ten is evil. At ten they are solely the result of natural development and their upbringing. That is why we have an age of criminal responsibility. In Australia this is absolute at 10 years of age and arguable up until 14- a moderately liberal approach and better than both England (10) and Scotland (recently changed to 12). More liberal and empirical systems choose higher ages.

Awful, awful case, and as a parent makes me distressed. Speaking with a friend of mine recently about your kids being victims of this type of thing, the lack of ability to stop it is what gave us both the most concern. We were actually talking about drunk drivers or drugged drivers, or speeding drivers etc, hitting your child in an accident, but the sentiment is the same: it's the things we can't control that are the most frightening. We can keep our kids safe from most things, make sure they look left/right/left before crossing, make sure they don't talk to strangers, make sure they're never in situations where they can be taken or taken advantage of, make sure they're not with people you don't trust and know... but these things, these seemingly random things are the ones that are the scariest.

James' Mum turned her back for a moment, and the boy is gone, and dead... absolutely mindblowing.

I remember it happening at the time and being shocked. I think what it will be remembered for historically is the first time CCTV was so prominent in a crime. That footage of them leading him away, I can still play it in my head, etched in there.

My old boss in the UK covered the story at the time and kept up on it. She said, and this was before one of them was in shit again, that the feeling always was one kid was just led into it and actually did little of the actual harm and one was the bad bastard.

I also recall there being specualtion at least one of them had been given a new identity and moved to Australia, but IIRC, the Aussie Govt came out and flat denied this?

There have been a few cases subsequently in the UK of young kids torturing and attempting to murder other kids, like an organised and sadistic fashion. CBF finding details but anyone interested could do a quick google and fine them.

I remember being on the computer labs in primary school, about ten years ago. We were in the computer lab and this was all over BBC news. I think it was either the tenth anniversary, or something of note had happened with the case or killers. Being a little kid then, it scared me to shit.
