James in doubt for Round 1
PortAdelaideFC.com.au Mon 10 March, 2003

Skilful midfielder Roger James has joined 12 of his teammates on the injury list and is in doubt for Port Adelaide’s premiership season opener against West Coast in just under three weeks time.

James was a late withdrawal from the trial match against Fremantle on Saturday night at Subiaco Oval. On Monday the club confirmed he had groin soreness and was expected to be out of action for two weeks, taking him to the brink of Round 1.

“We trained on Friday and he just had a kick and hurt his leg so he’ll be out for a few weeks,” Power coach Mark Williams said on Monday. “He’s certainly in doubt (for Round 1).”

James is one of five regular players still two or three weeks away from resuming. Warren Tredrea (knee), Jarrad Schofield (hamstring), Damien Hardwick (hamstring) and Che Cockatoo-Collins (modified program) are also battling to be ready come Round 1.

“That’s our major concern without any doubt,” Williams said of the injury list.

“We just want to move the group who’s playing a little bit forward but we have to pay particular attention to those injured players.

“Ideally, we would have liked to be a lot more structured as far as our first line-up right now, but because of the injuries, we can’t.”

Williams said last week the injury list came about through pushing too hard in looking for an extra edge over pre-season training. On Monday he narrowed that to apply to the players who finished 2002 with niggling injury problems.

“Our players who have been fit from the end of last year are fitter. It’s the ones who weren’t fit who have caused us most concern,” he said.

There was better news for Brett Montgomery, who has had an interrupted pre-season due to a back problem. The All Australian half-back is likely to have his first competitive hit out of the season on Friday night against Carlton at AAMI Stadium.

Fellow half-back Adam Kingsley is a chance to resume from a hamstring injury to take on the Blues.

Tough defender Michael Wilson, resuming after consecutive knee reconstructions, will get to Round 1 without having played a competitive match since Round 11, 2001. His latest setback (a hamstring) will keep him out of the Power’s fourth and final pre-season match on Friday.

The Power’s official injury list (as at Monday 10 March) is as follows:

Cain Ackland (osteitis pubis) – ongoing assessment
Wade Champion (modified program) – 4-5 weeks
Che Cockatoo-Collins (modified program) – 2 weeks
Damien Hardwick (hamstring) – 2-3 weeks
Roger James (groin soreness) – 2 weeks
Adam Kingsley (hamstring) – test
Paul Koulouriotis (hamstring) – 2-3 weeks
Brett Montgomery (back) – test
Adam Morgan (hamstring) – 1 week
Jarrad Schofield (hamstring) 2-3 weeks
Warren Tredrea (dislocated patella) – 2-3 weeks
Damon White (ankle) – ongoing assessment
Michael Wilson (hamstring) – 1 week

Jamesy hasn't had a big preseason and probably really needed another good hit out before the start of the season, this injury couldn't have com at a worse time. However it probably will give the like of Salopek & Cochrane a better chance of playing in the first game agaist WC.

By what Chocco wrote about him in the yearbook he might not ever have a big pre-season........

Ended the year in outstanding form, clearly one of our best. Unfortunately takes too long to get himself in a position to be able to provide us with that sort of form at the start of the year. Roger has outstanding disposal, needs to make sure his fitness matches that.
