You could call it the Australian paradox, on January 26 we're told to move on and not dwell on the past yet a couple of months later on ANZAC Day we're solemnly instructed to never forget. It must be a touch confusing to newcomers.

The difference being Anzac / remembrance is about remembering what our service women and men did to retain our free way life. Not dwelling or lamenting on.

Australia day is viewed by some in lament/ dwelling/ brooding from what the colonials did.

And this is where the push back comes from. Everyone acknowledges the wrongs of the past and that this day reminds of the hurt.

But Jan and Joe public can't do anything about the past. Yes change the date, but is anyone gonna forget the abhorrent colonisation? Not on your Nelly! Lament will continue regardless

What exactly unnerves you so much about the notion of someone making (oftentimes considerable) sacrifices in their life to attend a protest on a topic about which they feel strongly?

(If it was a cause you agree with, would they suddenly cease to be a “rent a crowd”? I suspect so.

Or are you genuinely troubled by any public expression of passion? Here’s the thing. I have strong feelings and opinions on politics, but I’m not much of an activist for a number of reasons. But I’m fine to leave the protesters to their protests without feeling the need to try to undermine their sincerity.)

Have no problem doubting their sincerity… for most it’s their only chance to mingle with the indigenous there as they normally don’t see them in their multi story apartment blocks when they come down for a trendy over priced coffee. ….

At the rally I went to, a Yugarapul man spoke about how his people and Palestinians are both victims of genocide, but the genocide of his people was in the past and the Palestinian one is happening now. He then led the crowd in a chant of Free Palestine. Later a representative of the local Palestinian community spoke about the great respect and solidarity he and his community had for the local First Nations people and his desire to learn what remains of their language.

not even Japan in WW2 planned to invade Australia (confirmed by the Japanese PM after the war).

The diggers invading Turkey in 1915 were certainly not fighting for Australian freedom, Nor against the Boers, or in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and the disgrace that was Afghanistan. Don’t give me the rubbish that the Anzacs were fighting for freedom. They never were and they never have.
