It’s only a couple of years since most people here wanted to storm Alberton with pitchforks after they gave Hartlett a 5 year extension. Now you’re saying “Just give Polec his 5 years and all the money he wants...”

...........,

What was wrong with giving Hartlett 5 years? Will be turning 31 just as the contract ends, which is about the age that performance starts to decline for the usual player.

A 5 year contract for Polec would expire at a similar age (on about his 31st birthday).

Somehow I don't think Bennell, Crouch or O'Meara are on five year $700,000 contracts. Beams and Viney don't need big contacts to keep them at their current clubs. And the Crows are morons.

If Beams, Sloane and Viney aren't earning in the vicinity of $700,000 then they need new managers. Facts are Polec has missed a handful of games in the previous 3 seasons, showing far more durability than any of the players I have listed above who would not be allowed to leave their club. Good clubs will not lose their best players unless there are some compelling extenuating circumstances (like Buddy's contract). Polec's missus may fall into that category, who knows, but this has all the hallmarks of another list management error.

If it's true then good luck to the guy, he'll be a huge loss but 5 years for a guy who can barely train is a big risk.

We had to lose someone sometime, this is the first real required player that's requested a trade since what......... Burgoyne? It's a good draft to get decent picks in.

How many out of Beams, Sloane, and Viney are still nursing a potentially career-ending foot issue to the point they can't train two days in a row, and seem to spend a lot of time just walking laps?

I didn’t say there was anything wrong with giving Hartlett 5 years. I love the guy. But when he got the 5 year extension he followed it up with a relatively average year, Port tried to put him up for trade but Hamish rightfully stood by his contract and wanted to stay. The club had put the ball completely in his court and couldn’t move him on. Personally I’m glad that’s how it happened, but a lot of people on this board were very annoyed that the club gave him such a lengthy deal.

The three you highlight I never said weren't getting big money, so I'm not sure why you highlighted that. Beams has already left one club, Viney is bolted on Melbourne who no club would bother trying to pry and Sloane was gone until the suitors all left him at the alter.

The club has done a lot wrong this season, but not matching North Melbourne's frankly ludicrous contract value and length isn't one of them. It would have been catastrophic and reckless list management.

The club knows Polec better than anyone, both on a personality level and a body wellness level. If they aren't willing to go big, then I'm more than happy with that. Any level headed supporter should be too.

Really?

Any level headed supporter should have no faith or trust in any aspect of the management of the club.

I hope last year's fringe player exodus, plus Impey, hasn't made our players internally a bit more comfortable with the concept of changing clubs.

For all the shit things the Crows have done with the massive amount of walkouts they've had, I don't necessarily mind that they've been harsh as other players thinking of leaving will certainly know they're walking out on bad terms and I think that's how it should be. Especially for important and required players.

Don't drag all the other crap into this, it will cloud your judgement. Not matching is totally the right call.

My feeling on this is that he's a damned good player but he is not irreplaceable. He was certainly not worth risking a five-year contract at that salary. On the other hand, he is worth that to North. That is the way it goes sometimes. We have been relatively lucky in recent years in keeping players we wanted to keep. This is the exception.

I hope Polec has a long and relatively successful year and that his foot does not suffer too much on the Dome's surface.
