I feel Carlton needs a developed ruckmen to teach younger players..

Jeff White on a 2 year deal sounds quite okay

should have got stephen king last year!

Although they are both equally shit and ineffective, White and King are completely different players.

King is a strong big-bodied ruckman who we could've got good use out of (at centre bounces only - around the ground he is a liability).

White is completely soft at the contests (but fairly mobile around the ground), and as such does not suit our needs whatseover (ie. somebody to protect our younger rucks).

Think again.

No, won't happen. Not in a million years. White might have once been a good player with excellent potential but he has ended his days as a has been not living up to that potential. Don't go there! Won't get a gig next year!

If you are going to get another ruck, get a good kid, give him a solid grounding and invest the time. Don't see White, see the future!

The bloke's old, undersized, soft and simply not much good anymore. Even if we don't secure Warnock i wouldn't want us to pick up White.

You'd think after drafting hack rucks like Ackland, McLAren, McKernan, Mott, Lindsay Smith we would have learnt by now. We need to put more time into Hammer & Kreuzer, if we want White maybe as a development coach at best.

I knew this would come up but as always like to put things in perspective. None of these guys except McKernan was EVER an elite ruckman. White was, therefore is capable of teaching. I note that despite being undersized, he still won his fair share of tapouts in 2008, so much still be able to jump.

Note also that despite being on a downward slide, McKernan did manage a B&F out of his two seasons with us.

Not saying we get White, just that the reasoning for not has to be correct.

Our midfield needs a ruckmen who won't get slaughtered at the bounces in 2009. Is Warnock that man or are we just developing yet another ruckman?

We will have to now offer #24 and #40 to get the job done as Freo has painted themselves into a corner by refusing #24 alone. When the Eagles demanded pick #1, at least they were able to save face by getting Kennedy and talking him up. Freo need something to save face. We will exchange #40 for #53 at least. I would prefer to deal #56 and leave #40 out of it.

Why this desperation for us to "shelter" our rucks next year?

If we are going to have a guy take some hits and not be all that good, and shelter our "kids" we already have him. His name is Cam Cloke, and he's not doing a bad job.

Warnock will be very unlikey to be the number 1 ruck next year. His frame is smaller the Hampsons...........so how does the logic work that Hampson needs to be protected from bigger bodies but Warnock wouldn't?

Makes no sense.

I say get Warnock if it doesn't cost much more than 24 (maybe the fringer player in Benji or Blackers......or both).

Cloke to still do some bullocking work, esp in the first Q's of games to take the sting out of the opposition rucks, then 2 of Warnock/Hampson/Kreuzer rotate through.

i.e. Cloke starts in the ruck. Warnock in the bench. Kreuzer at HF or FP, much the same as we did with Hampson this year.

I think you have made two points here.

1. We still won't have a clear number one ruck mixing it with the best next year if we get Warnock.

2. If we need to compete in the ruck next year in order to maximise our midfield talent, there is no point getting a has been who is undersized. We might as well go with the same big bodies undersized ruck we have.

I agree with this entirely. The only reason we need a ruckman is to compete sufficiently in the short term. The reason we are after Warnock is an afterthought luxury ... building for the future. We think Kreuzer might become a forward and are not convinced that Hammo will make it so Warnock gives us a better than even chance that either him or Hammo will become a decent ruckman long term.

None of this does anything to address our immediate ruck deficiency and next year, unless one of our lighter ruckmen pulls something magical out of himself, we will be monstered in the ruck yet again.

I really hope we don't stuff around too long developing a ruckman, when a capable veteran might fill the void long enough to win an unlikely flag in the next two years. You just never know ...

For these reasons, I am not adverse to Seaby or Charman and was happy to entertain the idea of Brogan or Lade for a season or so.

If we had the list space, I can handle getting Warnock to better our odds of having a star ruck in a couple of years, but would be happy to pick up a grizzled veteran with our last pick in the draft ... just in case 2009 could be a bolt from the blue for our boys.

I'd only look at Seaby or Charman if they came at the right price.........4th rounder or deaparting player.
Charman won't. They'll be affter a second rounder. Seaby will get a second from the Dees, and maybe the same from the Tiges I would have thought.

Stick with our own, maybe add Warnock if not too expensive (pick and $ wise), and be patient for another year.:thumbsu:

Still not sold of White. I'd actually prefer to promote Jacobs off the rookie list and give him a crack.

Am all for Jacobs to be promoted also.
Rookie list has been good in regards to rucks developing. (Sandilands, Cox)

This years premiership ruck Campbell came off the rookie list,
and has taken 8 years to be an 'overnight sensation'.

Looking at the finals sides this year, you wouldn't say any of the combinations would go down as all time greats of the game.

(H) Campbell, Renouf, (G) Ottens, Blake, (St) King, Kosi, (Co) Fraser, Bryan
(Wb) Hudson, Minson, (S) Everitt, Jolly, (N) McIntosh, Hale, (A) Maric, Moran

Am willing to be patient with rucks,
and not go berserk on draft picks for an unproven.

I really like the look of this player. In my eyes he will be one of the premier ruckman in the competition in years to come.

Completely agree. Ivan the Terrible will be a real cult hero before long. Love his attitude too. :thumbsu:

Jeff White's a dud Millsy123. But you Carlton boys can have him. I'd rather play Chris Bryan...

I hope we don't end up picking up Jeff White because if the deal goes down and we do land Robert Warnock, then that will leave us with 4 reasonable ruckman for 09, and i just don't see how Jeff White would even get a game. If, and it's likely that we will get Warnock, then i think Cloke will struggle to get a game with the time probably being invested in delveloping our young ruckmen in Kreuzer, Warnock and Hampson.
