Interesting to note on your first video that Cox was playing very slack armed in the ruck practice. He looked to be just standing around after the tap. This isn't something I had observed in his matches, so I'm not sure if if means anything. Any memories of the whole session that would support the idea he is not going 100%?
I don't think there is anything to be concerned about. He was the last the leave after staying out there kicking for goal for an extra 15 minutes.

He always looks like that.

I’ve always found it weird how posters discuss a professional athletes condition. The guys job is literally to have his body in peak physical condition for 10 months of the year. It would be a disgrace if on his first day back after 2 months away from the club he turned up looking noticeably different!

Best 5 defenders and forwards 2019

Forwards
Lynch
Brown
Hawkins
Cameron
Darling

Defenders
Talia
Grimes
Andrews
Stewart
Davis

Moore could be in that conversation but how many of those blokes play both positions how many were drafted to be in that position?

Moores already in the best 5 defenders. He was AA most the year only injury stopped him. I also think given the time he would be an AA fwd. Anyone who thinks Keane or Kelly will have an effect on Mooores contract has the same pharmacist as Sam Murray.

Shows they were recruited and developed as forwards.

Looks like we might have recruited and now developing Kelly as a forward. Who knows, may end up in top 5 forwards one day.

To suggest that kids who came in to the system playing on role cannot be successful on other roles is laughable. Many a player has done it, even very late in their careers. Leon Davis a prime example. A revelation down back.

But it's 99% of the time a forward who moves back not the other way. Nearly every example given was a u/18 fwd or early afl career, who then was turned into a defender.

From our club alone:

Prestigiacomo jnr CHF > Pies defender.
Clement (freo fwd) > Pies AA defender.
Ben Reid jnr fwd/afl starter fwd > AA Defender
Moore jnr fwd/afl starter fwd > Defender (Cusp of AA).
Leon Davis career fwd pocket > AA defender.

Yep Mihocek is a really good example

May show that despite what the average punter thinks, clubs prioritise strengthening defence.

I also think due to a greater spread of talent, junior clubs are most likely to placate their superstars by playing them forward.

Obviously the U/18 pathways to AFL would change that a bit as the junior talent all gets syphoned through the state and TAC teams and they can’t all be the superstar forward but I imagine before that it’s probably why so many are developed as forwards. Think of how many no 1 picks are forwards vs backmen etc. 14 yo superstars generally don’t want to play full back

King goes okay up forward.

Week 2: Session 1

Again, they started before 10. At this point, I need to be there by 9:30am lol But the sun was bright and warm early in the morning, of course there not being much shade. I went over to the glasshouse side for a while (swapped ends eventually, and there ended up being a nice breeze.)

Players in attendance:
Stevo
De Goey
Langdon (briefly toward the end)
Pendles
Dunn (He obviously trains and then goes home, saw him leaving afterward)
Mayne
Browns x 2
Daicos
Phillips
Roughy
Crisp (just on the stationary bike)
Kelly
Murphy
Broomy (again, briefly)
Appleby
Wills
Mihochek
Madgen
Quaynor (Running)
Sier
Howe
Atu
Tohil
Keane
Cox
Lynch
Wilson
Noble
Cameron (Running)

Went for about two hours. It was pretty full on. Included some match sims, group drills, running sprints, conditioning, stoppages. Kelly was playing on Howe, Roughy in the match sim.
Roughy had some centre clearances over cox, same with Lynch over Cox. Lynch improving and showing toward his strengths.

Coaches were impressed with some things murphy did.

Cox stayed behind to practice goal kicking. But he did quite a bit contact work, trying to get better at stoppages stuff and groundball toward teammates.

Jordy did the warm up and then did running sessions. Probably needs it after not having trained or played in longer than the others. Just needs to get some fitness in. I had a few people mention his skinny legs lol I'll post some photos and videos.

I walked around to the AAMI park side to watch the rest of the match sim, as it was played on that side of the ground and was easier to watch and take notice of it from there. Had a nice breeze, so that helped.

Wills getting in the mix of it, and working on other things than just his tackling. Was working on escaping traffic and hitting teammates with handballs.

Got any questions?
Dunn isn't getting paid by the club anymore, no real need to stick around beyond training. He might have picked up some work elsewhere while he waits for a lifeline.

I think most know that in AFL, coaches have a propensity to build a strong defensive system and then Attack after it. Although there are more attacking styles employed by coaches then others.

You need a good balance in both to be long term successful. I see more punters on here think everything comes back to defense/defensive acts over offensive systems, but the best teams (especially multi flag teams) often have a very powerful attacking system and personnel to implement it.

Also I think it shows that playing as a defender is relatively easier then forward and why the transition can happen (FWD > DEF) with usually good success (not just a role player type), naturally talented fwds will also shine down in defence given the right attitude (non sulking).

In all fields, not that many return from holidays in ideal condition, be it physical or mental.

What do all other fields, aside from other professional sports, have to do with my specific reference to professional athletes? Of course the reality is in your bog standard $70k pa office job or trade you will be mentally or physically off upon return from an 8 week break. An athlete though can’t afford it. The reality is though he looks the exact same as post 2019.

Essentially my standards are lower than yours, so what's an expectation for you is a bonus for me. I expect them to live it up in their break, and return with a bit of work to do to get back to where they were before the break.

Anyone concerned by Nathan’s comments that he wants us to be a defence first team in 2020?
If anything we need to find more goals. Our best weapons are midfield and forward of centre...we should be looking to score more freely.

I feel we stagnated last year with too much stop start risk adverse and defensive footy which ultimately cost us.

Yes and no. We already are a defence first team so it's not that alarming. Even if we back off defence a little, get better defensive vs offensive balance, we'd still be a defence first team. If it means we're about to become even more defensive count me concerned. We'd be shooting ourselves in the foot.
